What would you wear with these trousers? Please help a clueless person

I'm trying to wear jeans less, but I'm not really a skirt/dress person, especially when it's colder. I've seen these trousers from Next (linked both below) and tempted to buy one or both pairs as they look comfy (I have fibromyalgia, clothes can sometimes hurt so comfort is a must) but a bit smarter/more put together than something like joggers. I also love colour, but I'm not great at knowing what to wear it WITH, which is where I'm hoping Mumsnet can help.

I'm a size 16/18 and dropping weight slowly but surely so also attracted to the waistband that means they should fit me for a bit longer as they're elasticated waist!

I'd wear a tight tshirt in one of the colours with sandals. I think they're definitely summer wear.

I'm surprised so many people are dissing them. I like them thought. I judge people who wear jeans and white trainers.

Movinghouseatlast · 05/03/2025 20:39

I think they are for summer, so a t shirt and denim jacket.

M and S have got loads of wide leg trousers that you could wear now.

I wouldn’t wear anything with them, I would put them in the bin.
They are hideous. Plain black, brown or cream would be more classic.

What would be even more classic would be to keep that to yourself, no amount of plain black, brown or cream can imbue good manners.

Look at imlaurabradshaw on instagram OP.
She styles lots of lovely comfy but smart outfits.
I just got some "trousers that look like jeans but aren't" on her recommendation from Uniqlo. I love them.

I like the checky trousers and would wear plain t shirts with them

I was just going to mention her too. I love her comfy style.

henlake7 · 06/03/2025 12:51

Def summer trousers, I like them! But Im a colour and pattern person and have a few pairs of loud summers trousers myself.
Id go with either a t shirt or vest in a matching colour or a plain white, best to keep it fitted so you dont turn into a big fabric blob.

(if Im honest I would probably go with a fitted graphic tee and my leopard print Rocket Dogs and just lean into the clash!).😄

ladygindiva · 06/03/2025 12:58

I really disliked the first pair; but then clicked on the second pair and liked them so much I'm going to order a pair! I will wear them as the model is, with a slouchy loose but not too long sweater/top; I have a light grey linen mix knitted boat neck top that is very loose and waist length that is just the ticket.

GRCP · 06/03/2025 13:00

Plain white tee, denim jacket, trainers

spanieleyes22 · 06/03/2025 13:07

Really OP I think they look like pyjamas sorry. Probably ok kn a hot summer day with flip flops. Try some wide leg trousers and flats add a belt and a t shirt and blazer and you have a very comfy outfit that looks put together.

charmanderflame · 06/03/2025 14:22

I would not say they look smarter/ more put together than joggers. They look like pyjamas/ lounge wear to me.

Insidelaurashed · 06/03/2025 15:24

Thanks everyone for the thoughts (and especially for the Instagram recommendations, which I didn't think to ask for but are really really useful-going to follow all those who have been recommended)

My thought process was they'd be mostly worn in the house, probably around the block on a lunchtime walk/to the corner shop. Maybe on long flights if they're comfy enough. I agree they're absolutely not dressy enough for something like a night out or an office job where you have to wear office wear

Sorry OP, they probably draw attention and not in a good way. The Uniglo ones are lovely. Pair with a slight heel and a white T, denim jacket. Will look great.

ShaunaSadeki · 06/03/2025 20:35

I really like them, especially the 2nd pair. I would wear them with a fitted t shirt and Birkenstocks or trainers.

CerealPosterHere · 06/03/2025 22:17

I actually have both these trousers and love them 😁. Wearing tehm with various graphic tshirts. Next have some nice ones.

have also just ordered a green vest top from new look which I think will go well with the blue and green trousers in the summer.

Soontobe60 · 06/03/2025 22:20

I’d wear the black and white check ones with either a fitted black or white t shirt. The other style are awful, and only fit to be seen on a holiday to Goa.

CerealPosterHere · 06/03/2025 22:20

And I wouldn’t worry about everyone on here hating them, people on TikTok are raving about them especially the gingham…think they’re sold out now. 😁

redlightgreenlight123 · 07/03/2025 03:38

A red vest top or red jumper. In fact anything you tbh.

selffellatingouroborosofhate · 07/03/2025 04:13

Pyjama top, cosy slippers, and a mug of cocoa.

The point of S&B is to be honest and so save people from expensive mistakes, right?

NormaMajors1992coat · 07/03/2025 04:19

Thanks for the heads up OP, love the gingham ones and have bought a pair in b+w. I expect I'll wear them with a t shirt and trainers / Birkenstocks.

I second the Lucy and Yak recommendation, their Alexa trousers might be good for you, elasticated waist, super comfy and a generous cut.

Not always. OP wasn’t asking if people liked these trousers, she was asking how to style them. 🤷‍♀️

We have different styles and tastes. Black, brown or cream trousers sound vile and boring and very old fashioned to me but I wouldn’t go on a thread asking about brown trousers and say that.

I might even give advice about which pair of brown trousers I thought were nicer/fitted better even if I would never wear a pair myself. Trousers like the OP has linked to may not be for everyone but they are considered fashionable at the minute…”dopamine dressing” I believe is the phrase. Hence why these are sold out…I bet any brown trousers in Next aren’t selling at the same rate! 😁

BambooScaffolding · 07/03/2025 07:29

I expected to not as I'm not a big fan of pattern but actually, I quite like them. I'd wear them with a t-shirt or jumper in a similar colour (as she is in the lavender/blue option) or a baggy white soft gauze type shirt, with Birkies and probably rolled up at the ankles a bit.

More like Dopey dressing.

NewMarmiteJar · 07/03/2025 09:27

Pajamas.

SallyWD · 07/03/2025 09:27

I'm not fashionable so may not the best person to advise but I don't like them. I think they look like pyjamas or just loungewear for the house. I live in a fashion conscious area (combination of students and young professionals) and I haven't seen anyone wear trousers like this!
