What would you wear with these trousers? Please help a clueless person

I'm trying to wear jeans less, but I'm not really a skirt/dress person, especially when it's colder. I've seen these trousers from Next (linked both below) and tempted to buy one or both pairs as they look comfy (I have fibromyalgia, clothes can sometimes hurt so comfort is a must) but a bit smarter/more put together than something like joggers. I also love colour, but I'm not great at knowing what to wear it WITH, which is where I'm hoping Mumsnet can help.

What would you wear with these trousers?

I'm a size 16/18 and dropping weight slowly but surely so also attracted to the waistband that means they should fit me for a bit longer as they're elasticated waist!

I went to Next yesterday to buy these and they are far too long for me, so back to the drawing board. Agree with the previous posters who've talked about not everyone likes wearing the same clothes and that's okay-I for example do not like/suit navy blue chinos, as an example, but lots of people do-I either wouldn't comment on those threads or I'd say that the second pair looks nicest because XYZ. The world would be boring if we were all carbon copies of each other and wore the exact same thing.

Yeah I had to take both up even though one pair was petite

Well I have learned something new today, I had no idea these were fashionable at the moment! I absolutely love colour especially bright pinks but would never had imagined it was ok to wear these out of the house, they totally look like pjamas to me, lovely pjamas, but pjamas. I wear some bright stuff but if I wore these outside, in my small rural town I'd be stared at a lot and probably laughed at!

If you love them, you wear them, there should be more happy colour in the world, Wundaweb is great for taking such material up very easily.

The things you miss when you're not on TikTok!

Not always. OP wasn’t asking if people liked these trousers, she was asking how to style them. 🤷‍♀️

We have different styles and tastes. Black, brown or cream trousers sound vile and boring and very old fashioned to me but I wouldn’t go on a thread asking about brown trousers and say that.

I might even give advice about which pair of brown trousers I thought were nicer/fitted better even if I would never wear a pair myself. Trousers like the OP has linked to may not be for everyone but they are considered fashionable at the minute…”dopamine dressing” I believe is the phrase. Hence why these are sold out…I bet any brown trousers in Next aren’t selling at the same rate! 😁

Sometimes "style it into the returns envelope" is a legitimate answer.

There's clothes I would wear, clothes that I'd never wear but can see how they would work for someone else, and there's clothes that I honestly cannot foresee anyone looking anything other than ridiculous in. These trousers are in the last category.

Well have to admit I have bought them thinking they’ll be fab for an upcoming trip to Goa. 😁. Seriously.

Though I do wear them in the uk too. Not seen anyone laughing at me yet. I think my style is rather alternative which I’m fine with.

Dopamine dressing sounds interesting - is this why o am drawn to thinks best suited to 6 year olds? Because it gives me dopamine?

sewingbeezer · 07/03/2025 19:55

Learn to sew? I’m a size 20 and I wear brightly coloured loose trousers all the time, often with a plain top in a contrast or complimentary colour but definitely never wear cream, brown or black. Yuck, I can’t imagine anything more boring!

I make my own paper patterns and buy fab print fabrics from Holland and Germany mostly. During the winter months I wear a lot of knit fabrics and often get asked where I bought my trousers or can I make them some too. 😂

No idea to be honest, may well just be a label for colourful dressing.

Also, looking at some of the trousers linked above, they don’t fit the model well because they’re hanging too low in the crotch area.

RTW trousers rarely fit me snugly, so that’s why I started to make my own. I have a basic pattern that I made from my measurements and it fits me perfectly and I adapt it when I want a different leg shape.

Seajaye · 07/03/2025 21:31

I don't like those trousers much and don't see them as a jeans substitute in terms of wear ability. Getting your legs out of jeans can be hard. Have you thought about tunic tops and decent jersey trousers or baggy linen ones for the sunner , or longer jersey cotton dresses with thicker opaque tights in contrasting colours ? If you keep your legs covered you might find the transition easier

@Insidelaurashed I believe that if you like them and they match your personality then who are we to judge?!! clothing is an extension of who we are an expression of how we feel also can be a very powerful statement. It can transform how you feel about your self and how you carry yourself so if you love them buy them. so what they look like pjs and I love pjs like I love my scrubs Becuase they’re comfy! There’s so many outfits now that resemble pjs and so many nice pjs that you could wear outside of the house and nobody would ever know. And you obvs want comfort from what your saying and losing weight you want something that will last a bit so your not paying out again and they will adjust with you as you shrink down in size. Plus as your weight changes so will your style and personality it’s just how it goes. We’re always changing it’s part of the fun rediscovering who you are and can be.

If I were to wear these I would choose something fitted and plain as they are quite a vibrant out there, i would choose a colour that compliments the colour you have chosen depending on what you opt for!! With a cropped denim jacket or something to show off your waist and look put together.

let us know what colour you opt for? And enjoy having fun with your outfit choice. Life can be so serious at times it’s nice to experiment. 😍

My b+w gingham pair has arrived and they're really nice, still a bit nippy for them yet but looking forward to wearing them later in the spring, so thank you OP.
