Could this work for a wedding?

I have a hotel based wedding, late April. I have one dress and would really like not to have to buy anything new for it. Do you think with some accessories it could work or, is it too summer holiday, white trainers and denim jacket looking?

I have jewellery and a cream clutch bag. Not sure on shoes though.

It’s a hotel wedding but not a big 5 star grand wedding.

I’d wear it. In all honesty who would be analysing what other guests are wearing? How many people do you know that are going and as the saying goes those who matter don’t mind and those who mind don’t matter.

This. Nobody will bat an eyelid

Grammarnut · 04/03/2025 13:18

Belt, tights and nice shoes, with some jewellery and it would probably work, though it's a bit summer hols. Nice dress.

Neveranynamesleft · 04/03/2025 15:30

That dress with nice accessories will look lovely. What a ridiculous faff just for one day, it matters not one jot what anyone else thinks about it. Save your money, time and energy and use what you have.

GreatCyanRobin · 05/03/2025 03:52

I have to be honest, Its a bit causal to a wedding, id wear that in the summer walking the kids to school. Use the opportunity to dress up and have some glam with a pretty dress, that's what I say! Indont know about you but we dont often get chance to dress up. Make a thing of it, go and shine🥰

You don't need to spend a fortune. What is it they say " buy the dress and create the occasions" ? Both of these less than 50.

Love these dresses Dora. Where are they from?

Navy trouser suit is from John Lewis. Bought 3 years ago and when last checked about 3 weeks ago was fine. Just needs a dry clean. Hmmm, when we go out, I will wear jeans, a blouse or a top and a blazer. Sometimes heels or wedges, sometimes trainers. I thought that was smartish?

DH and I tend not to do dinner if we go out together. Mainly due to where we live and getting home so we will go to the city during the day, have lunch and a few drinks so we can get public transport home so no other dresses or smart/wedding type clothes in my wardrobe. Our last date was at Murrayfield for the 6 nations last weekend and we have a fish supper on the way home!

Don't listen to your detractors - I think your life sounds perfect.

I think I'd get out the navy suit and silk blouse. Pair them with metallic shoes and clutch/small shoulder bag: comfortable with a bit of pzazz! You'll look and feel fantastic. I hope you have a great day.

Have you tired looking for something in a charity shop? Vinted would be harder if you find dresses dont tent to suit you.I'm sure you'd be able to get a nice dress for about £10.

There's lots of lovely things out there and would save buying something brand new that you'll only wear once.

Definitely agree! I have got some great quality dresses from charity shops that I would never been able to afford or justify buying new and that have seen me through ‘posh’ events!

Maz452020 · 09/03/2025 18:07

I wore a 50s style dress with Mary Jane's and denim jacket after the service, I got lots of lovely comments, especially from elderly ladies. You do you 🩷

Lovetoplan · 09/03/2025 18:17

I think the dress is sweet and feminine and can definitely work for a wedding. May be look on Vinted for a weddingy hairband to go with it.

Thank you. I don’t have anything else but I am trawling various websites. I don’t really suit dresses. The one I linked miraculously looks ok on me. I just don’t seem to have proportions that work for some weird reason. I have a cobalt blue silk blouse/shirt but everything else is fairly smart/casual. Jeans, tops, blazers etc. Workwear is corporate provided and mainly safety boots and high viz jackets so nothing that can be styled up. I have a navy trouser suit in the attic just in case it’s needed for an interview.

Could the blue shirt work with the trousers from the suit. Then buy a nice statement necklace to dress it up,

Accessories - you ONLY need to have a basic white dress - off the rack / charity shop ... whatever
> stockings / hold ups / long white gloves / a vale

Hope it goes well

Happy Birthday GIF by Salih Kizilkaya

The bride might be pissed off if @Rugbyterms turns up dressed like this though 😂

Sishez74 · 09/03/2025 22:54

Zatapec · 15/03/2025 18:00

LailaDelaila · 16/03/2025 17:22

I think that dress is lovely, personally.

EarsLikeAFennecFox · 16/03/2025 17:38

I think I must attend a very different kind of wedding to most people on here, the dress you posted would be absolutely lovely in my opinion and experience @Rugbyterms .

The navy trouser suit might work with a really lovely silky or satin blouse (not a crisp, plain shirt, too corporate) and some nice heels? Not black or navy court shoes, again too corporate, but something more colourful or strappy? And a big silk flower corsage on the lapel?

I do think the dress is a bit too casual, but with the right accessories you might pull it off. I think you'd need matching shoes and bag in a bright colour and again, some sort of silk flower corsage or something to make the dress less casual. By the time you've done all that you may as well buy a new dress.

thislifer · 17/03/2025 15:53

It’s been quite a journey from not wanting to buy anything new and wearing a linen dress (I love linen, but it rarely looks smart if a dark colour when it’s been through the wash even once) to ordering 30 dresses and getting hair & makeup done!

I don't think the OP is the bride. I think she means she is a guest at a wedding.

TwigletsAndRadishes · 17/03/2025 16:03

If you don't think dresses suit you and you tend to wear jeans and trousers a lot, what about a nice dressy jumpsuit/all in one thing? They can be so flattering and really comfortable. I have one I've had for donkeys years from M&S and I still feel a million dollars in it.

A good one for the Viscous thread-sorry! **

LizzieLazzie · 17/03/2025 20:56

It looks fine to me. If you find it hard to buy dresses that fit and this feels good on you then that’s a win in my book - weddings can go on a long time and you need to feel comfortable, especially if it involves a meal. It will look nice with a necklace and maybe some nice cream sandals to match the clutch bag you have. Other posters saying it’s not formal enough have perhaps been to very posh weddings. Honestly I’ve been to a variety and guests wear all sorts, given there are usually people of all ages and different backgrounds there. The bride and her bridesmaids are the sartorial focus so don’t worry too much. Enjoy the day.

DustyLee123 · 16/02/2025 07:40

I wouldn’t pay out for something you won’t wear again. That will be fine with some accessories if it needs to be.

If you don’t have something appropriate you should not go. Accessories might dress up the dress but not enough for a wedding.

piscofrisco · 23/03/2025 07:11

bit too casual. If the shape suits you why not try looking for a similar shaped dress but in a smarter fabric. Have you looked on SilkFred? They have tons of dresses on there, lots in that shape or similar but in dressier fabrics that would work.
or search faux wrap midi dress maybe and see what comes up.

Of course you should go! The dress is lovely and the bride and groom want you there for you, not your dress.
