Considering a Brazilian Wax

CoffeeLover87 · 01/02/2025 12:17

Hi all,

So, I’ve never waxed down there before, but I’m seriously considering it. Shaving has become such a chore – it’s tedious, annoying, and honestly, my skin isn’t loving it. I end up with irritation every other time, and having to do it every few days. DH and I both prefer me hairless, but I’m starting to wonder if there’s a better way.

I’ve been thinking about trying a Brazilian wax since I’ve heard it lasts longer and causes less irritation than shaving. But here’s the thing: I’m a total wimp when it comes to pain. I dread getting my eyebrows waxed because even that makes me wince, so the thought of a Brazilian is making me sweat a bit.

Has anyone here had one? How bad is the pain, really? How long does it take, and is it actually more practical than shaving in the long run? Any tips for a first-timer? Or, if you think it’s a terrible idea for someone with zero pain tolerance, feel free to talk me out of it!

Thanks in advance

I wax and I don’t find it particularly painful.

I've had laser and it's amazing!!! Cost about £100 per session for full bikini, have it done every 8 weeks. I've so far had 3 sessions but anticipate needing another 3 so it is expensive but worth it in the long run when you add up the cost of waxing (£50 for a Brazilian where I live) and/or shaving over the decades...

LouisvilleSlugger · 01/02/2025 19:34

I have a Hollywood - everything off.

I don’t find it remotely painful and I have thick, coarse pubes. My beautician is an absolute master at it. She uses hot wax and we chat away and I barely notice it.

Rockingrobin25 · 01/02/2025 19:41

Definitely worth investing in laser! You can go to a salon or the home machines are pretty good these days! Pre laser I was quite hairy, 5 o clock shadow on legs with shaving and waxing just gave me irritation and in grown hairs. I had laser in a salon about 10 years ago which was amazing!!! Now have a home ipl machine just to do some top ups and get some of the areas that I didn't have done before and am having really good results despite only using it a couple of months. The braun pro 5 was under £300 on Black Friday and I've been super happy with it so far.

I have a Phillips Lumea and have used it on bikini area no problem. I don't think they recommend it but it's been fine for me.
It takes a while and the bit underneath took longer than the rest but you can get a subscription for a year and then it's yours. Also you never have to let it grow back which is what you have to do with waxing.
Bonus is if you don't like it for your bikini area you can still use it for arms and legs.

Would recommend over laser - I had 8 sessions and still had growth! Far too expensive. At least with home IPL if it takes 20 sessions it doesn't matter!

Pleaseletmegohome · 01/02/2025 19:48

The sides? Not a bother.
Underneath? Not a bother.
Bum? Also not a bother.
The Mons? WHOOPAH! That bit stings like a MoFo!

But… it’s over very quickly and your waxer will (should) apply gentle pressure immediately after taking the wax off and that really helps.

Do make sure it’s hot wax and not strip wax. I made this mistake the first time. I thought I might die.
Don’t wax close to your period.
Do take 2 paracetamol 20 mins before your appointment.

EspanaPorfavor · 01/02/2025 19:53

Láser removal definitely - is it even expensive anymore? I live in Spain and pay 28€ per session for the entire pubic area (including perianal 😳) - I’ve had two sessions and there are already bald bits, although she said it could take 8-12. It’s brilliant!

Gingerisgoodforyou · 01/02/2025 19:58

How on earth do you stretch skin taut when having a Hollywood? Do they stretch your labia out? I don't think I could let anyone do that, let alone face the pain!!

PermanentTemporary · 01/02/2025 20:04

I've had Hollywoods for about 6 years now. A lot depends on how good the waxer is imo, so ask around, try different places. It's a bit painful but really not that bad, and sometimes it's no more than a sharp intake of breath. I do take paracetamol and ibuprofen beforehand. I'm a total wuss BTW, screamed the place down when giving birth.

I occasionally get an ingrown hair or two and to combat that I use a cheap facial exfoliant from Boots.

The only time I had laser it hurt quite a bit, has it changed?

😂😂 no you pull the skin up towards your stomach for the top bit and then push the skin out towards your thighs for the sides 😂

Pinkelephant66 · 01/02/2025 20:06

Just go for laser!!

Souls of feet together, pull ankles close to arse and drop your knees out to the side. Or be in single leg ‘tabletop’ and hold behind your knee. And yes, I’ve been asked to push down on my inner thigh whilst the therapist stretches the labia prior to applying wax. They’ve seen it all and just want to do a good wax.

DreamingOfASilentNight · 01/02/2025 20:16

I genuinely don't think it hurts. Find a good really recommended ever who used quality hot wax. If you're concerned take a couple of paracetamol before. I think being worried makes it much much worse. Check what length they want the hair as that makes a difference but above all get lots of recommendations. Maybe start of by doing less and gradually undressed the area being waxed? Although I'd just go for it.

If you give the arra you live in maybe other posters can give recommendations.

Id recommend someone who uses lycon wax system. I've found it the most gentle of ask the types of hot wax I've had over many years but there are other options.

DaisyChain505 · 01/02/2025 20:22

Buy yourself a Phillips Lumea. The later versions come with changeable heads to use in specific areas including the face or bikini area.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 01/02/2025 20:28

I always have a bikini line wax ... I don't think I could bare much closer. Take paracetamol beforehand. Keep your distance from hubster for 48 hours.

user1471453601 · 01/02/2025 20:32

Why not just wait until you get old? I've lost most of my body hair.

But, seriously why would you want your pubis to look like a childs?

EspanaPorfavor · 01/02/2025 20:36

The Lumea didn’t work in my bikini line at all, although it was so effective on my legs and armpits that I’ve not shaved them in years. But laser seems to be working on my pubic hair. The therapist explained its hormonal and more resistant!

Pickandmixusername · 01/02/2025 20:39

I don't actually find it all that painful. It's just awkward and I find it more irritating than using a bikini trimmer. I couldn't do a close shave on my bikini line though. Ouch!

LouisvilleSlugger · 01/02/2025 20:42

This boring old trope. A waxed fanny does not resemble a child’s any more than a man’s shaved head resembles a baby’s.

And ‘why not wait until you get old?’ might be the silliest thing I’ve seen on here.

jjeoreo · 01/02/2025 20:46

Its not that bad. The pain is so temporary. And feels so smooth and lovely afterwards...

I agree the mons stings. And actually didn't enjoy the labia bit so now I just got for an extended bikini and undercarriage. A smooth bottom feels wonderful.

PermanentTemporary · 01/02/2025 20:49

@user1471453601 I always disliked my pubic hair and I thought that whole area was ugly. Turns out when not rugged up, it's one of my prettiest features. Hair removal is completely cultural and fashions change.

Bleachbum · 01/02/2025 21:21

If you want hair free then you need a Hollywood, not a Brazilian.

Make sure it’s hot wax, I find the hot chocolate one the most pain free.

It’s only one small part that actually stings a little. But a good waxer will immediately apply pressure to the area with her hand and the pain goes straight away.

Check out reviews on all the ones in your area on the Treatwell app to find a good one.

Go for it, it’s not as bad as you think it is. It’s over quite quickly. My teen is now a complete convert and gets hers done more regularly than me as it makes her feel cleaner during her period.

SeamsLegit · 01/02/2025 22:46

I've bought 10 sessions of laser at £30 each (better value than paying per session). Had one so far. Getting full bikini area zapped. And underarms as a 'deal'

Icanttakethisanymore · 01/02/2025 22:52

its fine. It’s not great, but it’s fine. I had a Hollywood monthly for years.

JenniferBooth · 01/02/2025 23:17

@CoffeeLover87 Does your DH get rid of his too?
