Talk to me about short hair!

BruceLeTerror · 31/01/2025 12:53

I've had shoulder length/long hair for ages for several reasons;
1) I hate going to the hairdressers 😂
2) I'm tall and a tomboy/have dogs/horses, and wear absolutely no make up, always in jeans/wellies and a few times in my younger days when I did have shorter hair (thousands of years ago!) I got mistaken for a man several times (V embarrassing)
3) I'm lazy, long hair = messy bun

However, as alas it comes to us all, age is catching up, hair is thinning and greying... and I'm wondering whether to get it all chopped off? Like Judi Dench short...

Ladies with shorter hair, how often do you have to go to the hairdressers for a trim? Any styles to avoid - and what is nice and easy to maintain?

Any thoughts appreciated :)

Thanking you 🙏

Oh wow! That looks amazing!

JaninaDuszejko · 18/02/2025 21:07

Looks great. Remember to use less shampoo when you wash it!

Shorthair can look great but its higher maintenance, more difficult to hide a bad haircut, you will be mistaken for a man..if you can laugh it off great but if you have body dysmorphia or body insecurities then id advise you not. Lastly, most women look better with longer hair than short. Longer hair hides a multitude of sin, looks more feminine and youthful, disguises unattractive ears or neck/shoulder humps.

I think a messy bun looks great and so easy to do.If you want to there’s the option of twisting it up and securing with a claw type grip which looks elegant.
I had short hair once and massively regretted it.
You don’t have to be brown/ grey, have blonde highlights added.

rockstarshoes · 18/02/2025 21:23

Love it! Well done for taking the plunge OP!

Unredchat · 18/02/2025 21:32

I had mine lopped a couple of months ago as was fed up with menopausal hair loss when I took bobbles out. I'm growing it back though. I got thick hair and lots of it and I'm using too much heat to control it.

Iheartmysmart · 18/02/2025 21:49

Wow it looks absolutely fantastic and really suits you!

LunaNorth · 18/02/2025 21:52

Fantastic!

BestIsWest · 18/02/2025 21:55

Glorious colour too!

Mrsmooja · 18/02/2025 22:03

That looks incredible! And I love the colour. Well done for having the courage to give it a go

Iloveshihtzus · 18/02/2025 23:01

I love it OP, it looks amazing.

i really cannot understand the fashion for long hair - regardless of hair type or face - most people I see with long hair would look better with shorter hair.

NattyTurtle59 · 19/02/2025 00:30

It looks great OP, and it does suit you. Enjoy your new hairstyle.

Ahsheeit · 19/02/2025 07:50

Niiice. Enjoy 5 minute showers and buying far less hair product. 😁

Lentilweaver · 19/02/2025 08:15

I love it, OP! So chic.

Valkyrie3 · 19/02/2025 09:20

Keep it long!
If you have it cut short you will be forever having to go to the hairdresser. Sad

Treaclewell · 19/02/2025 12:59

I was waiting around in the opthalmology dep. at a hospital yesterday. Not a lot to do so I looked at people's hair. All of us were, let's face it, old. Apart from my straggly grown out layers, all the women had short hair, excepr one whose long blond hair was styled that way and looked untidy, and she was younger than the rest of us. There were a couple of neat bobs, a curly short perm, a few short I don't know how to describe, but neck length with some shaping, and some very nice layered cuts. They framed the faces, softly, and softened the face attractively. Feminine. None of them would be mistaken for men.
The nurses OTOH, had pony tails, either high or low, scraped back from their faces, with the occasional bun. So did younger patients in other part of the hospital. I don't think they do the faces any good.

Normallynumb · 19/02/2025 14:38

WOW That looks truly amazing!!
Worth every minute of the 4 hours
Mine is quite similar and so easy to manage, literally less than 5 minutes to wash dry and style

Normallynumb · 19/02/2025 14:40

I'm 60 now but have had this cut forever

bigkahunaburger · 19/02/2025 14:41

brucetete.

Yeah that does look super good! I've just grown my pixie out to a bob and now I have hair envy!

I've just taken up swimming though and I did find short hair hard as it always had to be styled and I'm too lazy. Maybe I just didn't get the right cut. Mine was like yours but long at the front so I could tuck it behind my ear.

*skips off to look at pixie cuts....

So? I love getting my hair cut, always have.

BruceLeTerror · 20/02/2025 13:02

Thank You @everyone 😍

Bloody loving the new cut/colour (although it sticks up everywhere in the morning 😂 - TG am WFH next couple of days, although I feel like I'm in a zoo all the Teams calls having a gawp lol)

I will admit to having had a bit of an emo day yesterday (maybe overtired? 4 hours in a salon as a introvert is a loooong time!) or maybe a bit sad the hair gone - NOT that I regret it, its just been a big (messy) part of my life so long ifswim...

Now just need to find some good shampoo (that doesn't strip out colour!) lol

Thanks again to everyone for your lovely (and helpful) comments - they mean a lot xx

Resurrecting this thread to say I’m considering getting a pixie cut with a shaved back and sides and longer on top and thanks all for the tips and the pictures! @BruceLeTerror how is your hair six months in, have you kept it short?

BruceLeTerror · 18/08/2025 20:57

@DoubtfulCati bloody love it! It took a few weeks to get used to seeing me with short hair in the mirror 😂😂

My only regret is I didn’t do it sooner!

it saves me so much time, this might sound gross, but because it’s short, it doesn’t get greasy … so I only wash it twice a week! (I’m not a gym bunny so no sweaty head 😆) whereas my long hair got really greasy and it really needed washing every other day (boring!)

Honestly I love it 😀

What’s your hair like currently?

slug · 18/08/2025 21:15

I bought clippers during lockdown and now I cut my own hair every 4-6 weeks. I do DH’s as well. It takes me about 15 minutes. I do a no 6 on top and a no 4 over the rest.

DoubtfulCat · 18/08/2025 21:17

i bloody love it!

Ah, I love this for you!

I’m more of a hair chameleon, currently a bit shorter than it’s been for a very long time (6 years?) although I had a short pixie for most of the previous 7 years before that. But I’m getting the urge to go short again now. I’ll try and upload a picture to show what I’m thinking of.

Talk to me about short hair!

So tempted by this. I have curls though and a good friend looked sidelong at me when I said so, and said she thought people should play to their strengths, hair-wise, which I think was a kind way of saying she doesn’t think it’ll suit me!
