Talk to me about short hair!

I've had shoulder length/long hair for ages for several reasons;
1) I hate going to the hairdressers 😂
2) I'm tall and a tomboy/have dogs/horses, and wear absolutely no make up, always in jeans/wellies and a few times in my younger days when I did have shorter hair (thousands of years ago!) I got mistaken for a man several times (V embarrassing)
3) I'm lazy, long hair = messy bun

However, as alas it comes to us all, age is catching up, hair is thinning and greying... and I'm wondering whether to get it all chopped off? Like Judi Dench short...

Ladies with shorter hair, how often do you have to go to the hairdressers for a trim? Any styles to avoid - and what is nice and easy to maintain?

Any thoughts appreciated :)

Thanking you 🙏

Here’s mine. It’s a bit longer than this now, with an undercut.

I’m 71, I’ve had short hair for the last 20 years. My hair is fine and white/silver and I’ve never been able to faff around with it, so last week I had a soft perm and for the first time in my life I have curly hair and I couldn’t be more delighted!

I loved my corkscrew curls perms back in the day! I bet you look great

Short hair can look nice although I shudder at the helmet haircuts. It sounds as if the OP's hairdresser has totally got her and I know is going to look amazing!

Mine is Judy Dench short when I realise it it time to get it cut again, and most of the time shorter. The only person who mistook me for a man, and even they were not sure was a small child walking towards me with its mother asking in very loud voice "is that a lady or a man?" over and over again. The mother looked like she was dying a bit inside, I thought it was hilarious. I was wearing a dress over leggings so I think the poor kid was suffering some cognitive dissonance at my not ladylike haircut.

I got so sick of my menopausal frizz getting my eyes when walking my dog, that I bought whal clippers and now I have a 22mm skinhead. I have never felt better, it’s like freedom. I used to have lovely long natural wavy red hair . But fuck that you can’t hang on to it forever, feel the fear and chop it off.

The shorter the hair, the more maintenance it needs. Long hair is far easier to maintain in my opinion.

Surely that depends on the hair? Mine at chin length needs more maintenance than at very short - if it was long I would be spending hours on it. As it is I wash and go, and have a quck trim every eight weeks. Whatever length my hair was I would be getting regular trims - those who think once a year is enough are deluding themselves.

I have a textured, pixie crop and have (at last) managed to find a stylist who specialises in cutting short hair.

Somethings I've learned is that it's better to have your pixie crop cut 'dry'. Also, pixie cuts only really flatter if you have a rounded skull and a long neck. Texture is hugely important and a matt clay or dry powder is best. Avoid hair conditioner.

Good luck.

Oldieandgoldie · 14/02/2025 21:26

Short, thick, fast growing, grey hair here, it needs to be cut every 3-4 weeks.

To an avoid being too male looking, try blonde sun-in/streaks, or a purple shampoo.

I love my short hair.

eta yes to a dry cut, I much prefer them, but not every hairdresser will do them. Rough cost (reduction) is £5.

I went short yesterday! I've been getting shorter but it's shorter again - it's a long pixie I would call it. Will see how it does for maintenance but it's long enough at the front to put in a top knot to keep it out of my eyes for hte gym etc., but much shorter around the back. I may go full pixie still... in a few months! Inspired by this thread :)

bigkahunaburger · 15/02/2025 10:23

i have curly hair and Ive had every haircut going from pixie to waist length. The easiest Ive had is all one length waist length. Washed twice a week, and left down or in a plait. I would never have it cut either - just did it myself. Any bobs or mid-length with fringes/layers took loads of work and effort. Short was the same.

So for me, laziest hairstyle by far is one length past shoulders.

dgirluk · 15/02/2025 20:21

For me long hair is easy day to day, but the washing and drying takes too long, and it hurts my head to have it tied up (which is what it ends up being).

I have to wash it frequently with various gym, running, mountain biking, and motorbiking activities. And trying to manage that with camping and/or limited space on the bike was just annoying.

Def easier in terms of just plaiting it out the way or tying it back day to day though.

hoodiemassive · 15/02/2025 20:29

I used to get my hair done by barbers and have never been mistaken for a man.

The real question is whether you are slim. If you have sharp cheekbones and a defined jawline, a pixie cut looks great.

Bollocks. I’m not and it suits me.

That's not the real question in any situation. I despair!

Ahsheeit · 17/02/2025 19:29

My short cut. The front will be curlier once it's washed. Growing some of the front more where the barbers got a bit scissor happy on my previous visit. I have a line razored in that you can't quite see properly, on the parting. I love the freshly shaved feeling!

The only thing I need to do with this style is stick a bit of curl creme in when I wash it, then dampen on the days in between. 55 year old here. Shaving also hides grey. 😉

I'm none of those and I look great 😊

Agree - I am far from slim with defined cheekbones, and look far better with very short hair. Why do people keep trotting out this nonsense?

I don't suppose your hairdresser is in (south) London..?
