Talk to me about short hair!

BruceLeTerror · 31/01/2025 12:53

I've had shoulder length/long hair for ages for several reasons;
1) I hate going to the hairdressers 😂
2) I'm tall and a tomboy/have dogs/horses, and wear absolutely no make up, always in jeans/wellies and a few times in my younger days when I did have shorter hair (thousands of years ago!) I got mistaken for a man several times (V embarrassing)
3) I'm lazy, long hair = messy bun

However, as alas it comes to us all, age is catching up, hair is thinning and greying... and I'm wondering whether to get it all chopped off? Like Judi Dench short...

Ladies with shorter hair, how often do you have to go to the hairdressers for a trim? Any styles to avoid - and what is nice and easy to maintain?

Any thoughts appreciated :)

Thanking you 🙏

Shorthair can look great but its higher maintenance, more difficult to hide a bad haircut, you will be mistaken for a man..if you can laugh it off great but if you have body dysmorphia or body insecurities then id advise you not. Lastly, most women look better with longer hair than short. Longer hair hides a multitude of sin, looks more feminine and youthful, disguises unattractive ears or neck/shoulder humps.

What rubbish! "Most women" do not look better with longer hair, I see women every day who would look much better if they lost some length. As for high maintenance, I wash mine once a week and then forget about it until the next wash, other than maybe running my fingers through it once or twice. I get it cut every eight weeks. Funnily enough, when I got my hair cut really short I looked in the mirror and thought I looked younger, and then my hairdresser said "I've taken years off you with just a haircut". I'm not even going to address the "more feminine" comment.

BruceLeTerror · 06/02/2025 06:51

@NattyTurtle59 could I please ask what style you have that allows a cut every 8 weeks?
I really want a pixie type cut ... but slightly daunted about the 5-6 weeks trips to the hairdresser 😳 if I can style it out for 8 weeks .... well cut the bloody lot off now 😂😂
Super excited for my consultation tomorrow though 😁

Mine is a pixie type cut, but my hair is curly/wavy so I can probably go for longer between cuts than someone with straight hair (and I don't care if it gets a bit long).

Let us know how you get on tomorrow.

dgirluk · 06/02/2025 08:23

Yes definitely let us know how you get on ! I'm similar to you; tall, sporty, substitute motorbikes and bicycles for horses, hate going to the hairdressers sick to the back teeth of washing and drying my hair. Add that it's greying and I tend to dye it pink, but also fed up of dying it (but also hate the grey). I went from long and progressively it's got shorter, then a longish bob with an undercut (halves drying time etc.) but my hair is a bit frizzy so still needs a dry and straightners and I'm just getting fed up and bored of having to do it, and veering towards chopping it all off.

But I had super short hair when I was younger and yes I also got mistaken for a man a couple of times, and I am not sure if I'm using rose tinted glasses to remember it was low maintenance or not. A shower and a wash every morning probably won't work, but then going away on the bikes and needing shampoo, conditioner, dryer and straighteners is also a total pita.

Toying with a pixie-ish but mostly unsure about the short length around my face - anything shorter than chin and I'm sure I'll look weird. And can't seem to find the cut I want online.

So definitely very interested in your decision and how it works for you! I've got a haircut booked in a couple of weeks.......

sashh · 06/02/2025 08:29

I donate my hair to The Little Princess Trust so I go from long to short, sometimes a short bob, other times layered.

I then just leave it to grow again, it takes 2-3 years.

EleanorRavenclaw · 06/02/2025 11:20

A lady on The Repair Shop last night had a lovely short hair cut with a long fringe. It was a fabulous cut and very flattering. I think she repaired the lace dress if you can catch up.

BruceLeTerror · 07/02/2025 15:25

Had my consultation with hair dresser foday ....
Said I kinda want a Judi Dench/Victoria Hamilton (the Crow Girl) style and to maybe grey it out
She said to wait! (For the grey as it's not completely grey) and put a vibrant colour on it ... BUT! She thinks the Pixie would be great! Apparently I have good face shape - who even knew?! (She's almost as excited as me 😂) so appointment booked Tues 18th!
Only 3 hair washes to go 😂😂😂😂 Can't wait 😂😂

Thank You all again for your comments

I have short hair. My ears are beautiful.

¿🙂?
Though perhaps a little bit wonky.

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 07/02/2025 15:42

Well done OP - short hair is fab. I first chopped mine off age 17. Its now totally silver which is fab (imho)

DH much prefers it short. Says it really suits me and on the odd occasion i grow it out he says it's boring lol

I have lovely ears too Grin

Snowmanscarf · 07/02/2025 15:46

I’ve gone the other way - had short hair for over twenty years and then during the pandemic, it grew out.

Much prefer longer hair. I can go much longer between haircuts as it’s one length. I love the versatility of being able to tie it back, etc. I remember having my hair cut once, and couldn’t believe hiw quick the session was - just snip, snip, snip, rather than lots of layers.

The advantage of short hair is obviously you need less shampoo etc, and you can wash and go. However, I probably used more styling products then, to give it a bit of volume. Did get mistaken for a man every so often.

Normallynumb · 07/02/2025 17:41

Ahh that's great I have had a soft pixie forever
I have small frame and a gamine( ?) face and I'm told it really suits me.
I go for a cut and colour every 5 weeks.
I'm 60 now so it's my luxury!

Eyesopenwideawake · 07/02/2025 17:45

I'm 61 and have a white blonde pixie cut (no. 6) - think Annie Lennox or Jamie Lee Curtis (minus the looks, sadly!). The colour is high maintenance, the cut isn't.

Zippedydodah · 07/02/2025 18:23

I’m 71, I’ve had short hair for the last 20 years. My hair is fine and white/silver and I’ve never been able to faff around with it, so last week I had a soft perm and for the first time in my life I have curly hair and I couldn’t be more delighted!

Yogachick · 07/02/2025 18:40

I’m so excited for You OP. Please come back with pics and thoughts if you don’t mind x

Yogachick · 14/02/2025 17:32

Off the back of this @BruceLeTerror Ive gone back to my pixie yesterday but a different style to before, different hairdresser more passionate about what’s right for me. It’s made me so happy and I think taken years off. I hope yours brings you the same joy x

DrCoconut · 14/02/2025 18:10

My hair has thinned due to peri and iron issues. It's also changed texture. It now looks awful long and accentuates how rubbish it is so I have a short haircut. I get mistaken for a man all the time but I'm not really bothered.

BruceLeTerror · 14/02/2025 18:20

@Yogachick ahhh that's awesome! I'm so glad 😀😀

My appointment is Tuesday, was super excited originally - but been wobbling a bit last couple of days, but your post has inspired me 👍👍 Thank You 🙏

Will post before/after pics 🙈🙈😂😂

Short hair for life on instagram always looks fantastic with very short hair!

Moveoverdarlin · 14/02/2025 18:42

The shorter the hair, the more maintenance it needs. Long hair is far easier to maintain in my opinion.

Pamspeople · 14/02/2025 18:51

Have had short hair most of my life, love it and feel really messy and ugh when it gets any longer. Never been mistaken for a man as far as I know but wouldn't care if I was. I feel sad that it seems to have become rare for girls to have short hair, feels like we've gone backwards in challenging gender stereotypes

Yogachick · 14/02/2025 19:04

I have to disagree @Moveoverdarlin . When my hair was longer if I didn’t spend time carefully washing and styling , it looked a mess. I spent a fortune on products to try & get the best out of it, bought a Dyson hairdryer to help( no regrets about that tho). And ultimately made me miserable. It looked good for about 10 mins , then had to be tied back/up as it was messy and trailed over my face.Having to go to the hairdresser more often is a teeny price to pay for the 5 mins to great hair, that stays that way all day, not because it’s been glued into submission with products but because it’s can be jigged about & still look awesome. It’s possibly a lot of it was my particular type of hair, and I’m not someone who enjoys the beautifying process so like to be my version of well turned out with minimum effort. I feel free & gorgeous with my pixie x

HeyMuggie · 14/02/2025 19:13

Is anyone brave enough to upload a photo of their short hair??

BestIsWest · 14/02/2025 19:28

I disagree with @Moveoverdarlin too. When my hair was longer it took ages to blow dry, went frizzy in any damp, needed 15 minutes styling every morning even if I hadn’t washed it and was far more of a faff in general. Now it takes me 10 minutes to wash and blow dry and most mornings I barely run my fingers through it and it looks good.

tsmainsqueeze · 14/02/2025 19:41

I have had a short asymmetric pixie style cut since teenage , i have never been mistaken for a man !
Cut every 4 weeks ,sometimes 3 and wash and style every day ,takes about 5 minutes.
But over the last few weeks i have grown it quite a bit longer from my usual ,still lots of layers less asymmetry ,softer and feathery and i really like it.
I get lots of compliments about my hair but i see longer styles and wish that were me although mine is the wrong texture for long.
I don't think we are ever satisfied with our own hair.
