Work shoes...these, these or these?

Been on a bit of a hunt for smart casual work (office) shoes. Never bought from Urban Outfitters before, does anyone know about the quality? Undecided which style to go for. Already have Dr Martens Adrian but wondered about a change. They can feel very clumpy sometimes, albeit very comfy.
I usually wear ankle grazer trousers or jeans or black opaque tights with mini skirts.

Surprised how much favour the mary janes have got! They were a bargain at £30 for leather so they seem like a winner. The Boden ones I like too, typically my style of shoe though like a pp I'm not sure if I'm getting a bit tired of the super chunky styles now and fancy a return to something more lightweight looking and timeless.

I have completely gone off chunky shoes, would much prefer lightweight and timeless, I think they are more feminine and professional

mushroom3 · 06/01/2025 16:47

I like the UO ones and the Jones as a second choice. I think the Boden ones look frumpy!

mitogoshigg · 06/01/2025 16:48

I tend to wear loafers but mine are M&S, super comfy and because I have smaller feet they are from the school shoes dept, no vat!

SparklyLeader · 06/01/2025 20:18

Mary Janes are super cute, the penny loafers are 'meh,' I have never been partial to tassels on loafers, but that's just me, and the gold chain loafers are the most professional looking; however, they are more professional looking because they look like older people wear them. I can say this because I wear exactly those kinds of shoes. I can also tell you people my age expect younger people to wear professional shoes for their generation, not ours.

All these brands have quite different fits

(Dr martens are wide, Boden are narrow)

Jones it varies by the brand they stock (Gabor are wide for example)

unsure on urban outfitters - I used to fantasize about their clothing whilst moping round as a student in one of their London shops… but also used to play “skirt or belt” it’s aimed at under 21s.

I've just bought these. They are very comfortable, smart and not too clunky. Proper sole too.

style-wise Jones, though they may not be comfy, for work and long day wear i wont pick any of those brands unless its for occasional wear only

80smonster · 07/01/2025 17:10

I liked the UO mary jane’s so much I bought a pair!

Oh interesting! I do like the mary janes, a bit different without being clunky or child like. I did like the martens version but they are just too much like school shoes!
Least favourite are probably the jones ones, maybe I'm just a bit bored of loafers even though they are perfectly nice.

I’d always go with docs for comfort. Urban Outfitters look really nice but they don’t look comfy. I love Boden stuff but I’ve several pairs from there and I’m limping within a few hours. Based on comfort second choice would be Jones as they look fairly soft, like they’d mould to your feet.

Im middle aged and have bad taste though!

Justkoko · 09/01/2025 11:59

To update, I went with the UO MJs and can confirm they are both smart and comfortable!

I’d pick the Jones Bootmakers or Doc Marten’s loafers.

I hate Mary Jane’s, think they look like dolls shoes and they make people who wear them look slightly infantile. (I didn’t like dolls as a small child so maybe I’m the one in the wrong and need therapy…) Sorry OP as I now see these are the pair you’ve chosen. 🫣

My Urban Outfitters Mary Janes arrived yesterday. Perfect fit, really comfortable and I love them. For 29 quid what's not to like?

They're all quite clumpy but very practical if you're going to be on your feet a lot

Agreed!

Sorry to jump on this thread belatedly.. they got one pair of the Mary Jane’s in my size back in stock so I’ve ordered them! Anyway I saw them on this thread when it first apprared and I really like them so thanks for sharing the UO link.

they’re a bit more out there than what I usually go for (I am a tad boring and have lost a sense of style after 2 kids!)

any tips on how to style them for smart casual (non work) would be much appreciated!!

Justkoko · 29/01/2025 09:24

I got them and love them. Just wearing with skirts and tights at the mo so not terribly adventurous but really do like them. I worried this type would feel a bit 'school shoe' but they are somehow not at all.
