Work shoes...these, these or these?

Justkoko · 01/01/2025 14:49

Been on a bit of a hunt for smart casual work (office) shoes. Never bought from Urban Outfitters before, does anyone know about the quality? Undecided which style to go for. Already have Dr Martens Adrian but wondered about a change. They can feel very clumpy sometimes, albeit very comfy.
I usually wear ankle grazer trousers or jeans or black opaque tights with mini skirts.

I already own the dr martens and they are well worn in so a bit like Slippers now. The Jones are very tight around the top, I think they'll hurt my heels. I'm standard 5 in just about anything. They will go back. The mary janes feel pretty nice and comfy, solid rubber sole and leather upper, I like them more than I thought I would. I like the boden but not tried them on yet. Considering the price difference, UO is winning atm!

I’m eyeing these up now, they’re great! Much nicer than the loafers (although tbf I am not a fan of loafers as a style).

BunnyLake · 03/01/2025 11:36

The Boden ones. Russell & Bromley had a lovely pair of loafers but were well out of my price range (I could buy in a weak moment but cant justify £250). I still lust after them a year later.

HagathaChristi · 03/01/2025 18:10

I don't like the Doc Martens or the Bodens. The others are great.

MrsPeregrine · 03/01/2025 23:16

I don’t like any of them to be honest.

BarkPench · 03/01/2025 23:24

Ugh no! Mary Janes are twee shite and always have been. OP if you want to wear something retro at least make it fun, or cool not adult versions of the worst most sappy school shoes. What about smart trainers, pointy kitten heels, crocs, uggs, loafers or Chelsea boots, ballet pumps or anything else really.

Grammarnut · 04/01/2025 09:02

I like the Darra chunky loafers, which look comfortable and stylish. The Iris chunky snaffle loafers are also good. Both look suitable in the workplace and will walk out to socialise after work, too.
Most of the strappy shoes look juvenile. Sadly, I haven't seen a strappy shoe that looks good for some time.

I like the Boden ones best. However check that the buckle is not too heavy for the leather loops supporting it.

I bought an relatively expensive pair of shoes for work that look very similar to the Boden brand. The metal buckle was way too heavy for the leather loops and the leather loops have broken multiple times. Last time I brought them to shoe repairer shop they recommended just to remove the buckles as it would keep happening.

therewasafishinthepercolator · 04/01/2025 17:45

Really like the first two. Second pair are gorgeous and the first definitely worth trying at that price.

Not keen on the Boden or DM.

ruethewhirl · 04/01/2025 19:32

The Bodens get my vote, followed by the Mary Janes. Not keen on the other pair.

Winterskyfall · 04/01/2025 19:47

Mary Janes is my vote.

Stardustmoon · 04/01/2025 21:24

Dr Martens. They will last forever and once you have broken them in, they will be comfortable!

Randomontheinternet25 · 04/01/2025 21:26

@Stardustmoon no way DMs are rubbish now, poor quality overpriced fashion shoes.

Stardustmoon · 04/01/2025 21:35

@Randomontheinternet25 I disagree. Mine gave lasted ages and I wear them daily - I'm a teacher so they get a lot of wear!

Randomontheinternet25 · 04/01/2025 21:43

Ive worn mine almost daily for ten months (between surgeries , and use a mobility scooter so they hardly get walked on) and they are basically fit for the bin, the leather has torn up from the sole but not fully split the edging around the top of the boot has peeled they are the only boots I can wear at the moment due to the surgeries I've had ( I've bought and returned at least 20 pairs of shoes and boots in the last ten months)
My previous shoes split across the front when they were work shoes and I could walk.
In my opinion a pair of boots that hardly touch the actual floor should last more than ten months.

GreenFingeredClara · 05/01/2025 18:09

I like the Boden ones best, but what puts me off most of the shoes in the shops now is their built-in obsolescence: with such tyre-like treads, they can't be re-soled and having fallen for this a few times now, I am unwilling to buy similar. Does anyone else feel this way?

KM123456 · 05/01/2025 19:50

Urban outfitters is known more for disposable fashion than durability or quality. Hard to get both. Their shoes are cute. Any place they are on sale? Can you accept that and just enjoy them, knowing they may not last, or provide the best support?

SunflowerSeahorse · 05/01/2025 19:58

Never bought Jones since a pair I bought for my son fell apart in a few weeks. I was shocked, as they're not exactly budget. He's literally had Shoe Zone shoes last longer.

Randomontheinternet25 · 05/01/2025 20:02

@SunflowerSeahorse I hope you took them back? I've never had any issues with Jones but that's really poor .

Busywithsomething · 05/01/2025 20:58

I prefer the Boden ones. They're alright. ( Although I'm an old fart and I don't like any of the current chunky shoes. I'm sitting out the next five or so years til things revolve and less chunky shoes come back again. Sorry for the negativity.)

menopausalfart · 05/01/2025 21:19

I love UO. I've bought lots from there.

MeMeMeMeOw · 05/01/2025 21:45

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 01/01/2025 17:10

The Mary Janes by a mile. I don't know what the quality of Urban Outfitters is like but to my eyes they're much nicer than the loafers.

I just read this thread, clicked on the link and bought a pair myself.

Anewyearanewday · 05/01/2025 23:07

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 02/01/2025 19:48

The Boden loafers are horrible. The Jones ones are marginally less awful.

I agree. I couldn't believe the love for them as I scrolled down the posts. They look so cheap.

Justkoko · 06/01/2025 12:15

Surprised how much favour the mary janes have got! They were a bargain at £30 for leather so they seem like a winner. The Boden ones I like too, typically my style of shoe though like a pp I'm not sure if I'm getting a bit tired of the super chunky styles now and fancy a return to something more lightweight looking and timeless.

Oh and the Boden ones were nice but went back. The buckle was too yellow/orange gold and while the fit was nice, the soles were quite stiff so they'd be slipping off. I end up hurting my feet to keep shoes like that on. The DMs are very high at the front so no issue with that at all.
