Should this bag be what I spend my gift card on…?

https://www.selfridges.com/GB/en/product/marc-jacobs-the-clover-shoulder-bag_R04365051/#colour=CEMENT

v generous relative gave me a gift card that can (if I supplement by £25!!) afford me this bag I’ve had my eye on…

Ive never had a Marc Jacobs bag before. (Though I’m a real Bag lover!) Are they decent quality?

I just adore the colour (I know the griege effect isn’t to everyone’s taste but I love it) and I’ve been looking for a small crossbody/shoulder bag, just big enough for the basics. I don’t have anything like this and I’m keen for a change from lugging pointless stuff and getting neck ache.

Or should I forget the bag and spend the gift card bit by bit on smaller items to eke out the pleasure a bit more?! I could get some nice Dune loafers AND a really lovely perfume and prob still have a bit leftover for another treat down the line…

Help me decide!!!

I think it’s a v cute bag. I don’t love the colour, but you do, so go for it!

a bag is something you could have forever if you take good care of it, shoes and perfume would run out.

ShadesOfPemberley · 02/10/2024 22:25

Thanks Dazed!

I know I’m in a bit of a minority on the colour front… I have no idea why but a colour called ‘cement’ just makes me happy 😂😂😂

That’s my thinking too… a hefty spend on one item I love and will use for a long time seems a better use of the generous gift…! I can be quite easily persuaded I’m right, can’t you tell…? 😵‍💫

I would if you love it! I have a Ted Baker one a similar size/colour and adore it, use it nearly every day.

PickAChew · 02/10/2024 22:28

I'm not keen on the chain but it looks like nice leather and very well put together. Also not so deep you lose stuff in the bottom!

The colour is a versatile neutral.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 02/10/2024 22:29

I love it!!

Don't you dare spend such a generous gift in forgettable dribs and drabs. Buy something special.

Isabelle70 · 02/10/2024 22:33

I say get the bag and you will always remember it as that lovely gift from your family member.
I like the colour too, a great neutral for year round use.

someon · 02/10/2024 22:34

Definitely buy the bag! It seems your hearts seems set on it and its a lovely bag great neutral colour will go with most things.

AutumnTimeForCosy24 · 02/10/2024 22:41

Ok, ignoring the bag itself, I think it would be good to spend the money on one item you love than a few you like. If it's in your nature the one item could be 'looked after' and ensure a long life of your gift. or be properly used & enjoyed daily and live it for as long as it survives daily use.

buying less lived item doesn't really make you heart sing. It's a gift, 🎁 you should buy something that makes your heart sing if you can!!

MissSookieStackhouse · 02/10/2024 22:48

If you love it, go for it! A relative gave me some money and I splurged it on some expensive boots that I had to supplement by only £20 to buy! I absolutely love them and mentally thank that relative every time I wear them! I wouldn’t have been able to justify spending so much on a pair of boots otherwise. Plus, if I’d spent the cash on random odds and sods to the same value, I’d probably barely remember the gift now! Go for it I say! 😀

WookieMama · 02/10/2024 23:15

buy the bag OP! It’s lovely. I have a couple of Marc Jacobs bags and they have worn really well ☺️

biglipslittlehips · 02/10/2024 23:19

It's a great colour and one that will work across all seasons

Leopardprintlover101 · 02/10/2024 23:42

Spend the card on something you would like but wouldn’t want to spend the money on yourself.

If you could justify perfume to yourself easily as something you would buy, but the bag is something you want but would find harder to justify then definitely go for the bag!

YesItsMe44 · 03/10/2024 00:17

I've had my Marc Jacobs bag for 20+ years and still use it. I really like it, but it is heavy empty. Great quality.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 03/10/2024 02:48

Buy the bag. Bags trump everything!

Aroastdinnerisnotahumanright · 03/10/2024 03:18

I like it! It will go with so many outfits. Much better investment than dune loafers I'd say. I have an MJ bag that is excellent quality but over 10 years old so can't vouch for current standards.

Cobblersorchard · 03/10/2024 03:53

Absolutely buy it. I’m not a bag person so wouldn’t choose that personally but would buy something long lasting. In similar circumstances I bought a piece of home decor that I adore and still have 20 years on. No regrets, gives me ongoing pleasure and memories.

I like the bag and the colour and I’d go for a “big” item rather than many forgettable ones.

2 things:

  • is it heavy? It’s small enough that you won’t carry too many things inside, so maybe that’s not so important I weighed one up in the shop and it seemed heavy to me (actually, might have been a Coach one, I was with my DD)
  • I read that the cross-body style is not this year’s fashion, so I’d go for a classic over the shoulder style
PinkTonic · 03/10/2024 08:15

It’s a good idea to spend the money on one thing you wouldn’t be able to buy otherwise, and a nice bag is also useful. Personally I wouldn’t buy that bag, you could get a small Strathberry for under £300 which would be much better quality and more special for a bag lover.

Littleme2023 · 03/10/2024 08:26

I love it, it’s the perfect colour and will go with absolutely everything xx

theemptinessmachine · 03/10/2024 08:37

It's a lovely bag and has a leather strap as well which I'm sure you know. It looks a decent size . Go for the thing you would not buy yourself ! It reminds me of the Coach Tabby.

User050105 · 03/10/2024 08:42

I like it a lot. But check you can actually fit your essentials in it. Phone, purse, keys, sunglasses?

I almost bought a new bag recently but when i saw it in the store it was smaller inside than I thought.

Missionimprobable · 03/10/2024 08:45

Yep, get it! I love the colour.
I've a couple of Marc Jacobs bags, I also got the medium tote bag for Christmas, lovely.
Dsis has a MJ bag similar to yours in cream, it's old but she uses it all the time, it's still in good condition.

Newposter180 · 03/10/2024 09:58

Usually really dislike MJ bags but that’s actually nice and subtle. I also like the colour. Would 100% buy one big item rather than bits here and there.

Sooverwork · 03/10/2024 10:35

If you love the bag just buy it . I’ve got a few “ expensive “ bags as a treat for various milestones . One was a leather crossbody that goes with everything and I’ve worn to death for 7 years as I love it and has sentimental value to me.
