Should this bag be what I spend my gift card on…?

https://www.selfridges.com/GB/en/product/marc-jacobs-the-clover-shoulder-bag_R04365051/#colour=CEMENT

v generous relative gave me a gift card that can (if I supplement by £25!!) afford me this bag I’ve had my eye on…

Ive never had a Marc Jacobs bag before. (Though I’m a real Bag lover!) Are they decent quality?

I just adore the colour (I know the griege effect isn’t to everyone’s taste but I love it) and I’ve been looking for a small crossbody/shoulder bag, just big enough for the basics. I don’t have anything like this and I’m keen for a change from lugging pointless stuff and getting neck ache.

Or should I forget the bag and spend the gift card bit by bit on smaller items to eke out the pleasure a bit more?! I could get some nice Dune loafers AND a really lovely perfume and prob still have a bit leftover for another treat down the line…

Help me decide!!!

Thanks so much everyone!

I will have a look at Strathberry bags, I think they are stocked at S’fridges, thanks for the tip!

I think though I’m def going to go ahead and get this one, if I don’t absolutely love it when it arrives I will return it but keep looking for a ‘special’ purchase. I wouldn’t be able to justify this bag as a self-splurge as we’re a bit tight on funds at the moment. So it really would be something I’d treasure and appreciate.

Thanks everyone for the enabling! 😂

I'd say go for the bag (but likewise I'm a bag lover!).

I've got a Marc Jacobs bag that I bought preloved some years ago. It's the same shape as the LV Speedy. It's looking a bit battered now, but that's only because it could do with a bit of leather polish. I used it continually whilst I was working, it's been shoved under the seat on planes and used as an overnight bag (admittedly only when I took the very bare essentials!). It's soft, squishy and the leather is great. I love it.

Purplecatshopaholic · 03/10/2024 11:15

Great bag op. Will go with everything and you’ll use it all the time. I have a MJ bag and it’s wearing well. Go for it.

muggletops · 03/10/2024 14:52

If you are debating this much about it and posting on MN OP then you definitely need to buy it! I would never second guess buying a handbag if it was a gift card that is what its meant for.... something you wouldn't buy yourself!! Classic colour, can put your essentials in and practical being crossbody... its a yes from me!!

I like the bag and the colour and I’d go for a “big” item rather than many forgettable ones.

2 things:

  • is it heavy? It’s small enough that you won’t carry too many things inside, so maybe that’s not so important I weighed one up in the shop and it seemed heavy to me (actually, might have been a Coach one, I was with my DD)
  • I read that the cross-body style is not this year’s fashion, so I’d go for a classic over the shoulder style

It comes with 2 straps. The cross body length and shoulder length.

MouseMinge · 03/10/2024 15:54

Your link has "recently viewed" at the bottom. I haven't been near Selfridges recently so I'm guessing they're your recently viewed items? If so I love the earrings you looked at and I might buy the make up brushes that look like really good value for money!

The bag is not my style but it's yours and if you love it then of course you should buy it and enjoy it for years to come.

Ruthietuthie · 03/10/2024 16:07

It's gorgeous! Get it!

startingoveragainagain · 03/10/2024 16:59

Never had that brand bag, but I have a lot of griege stuff (including bags), it's a great colour goes with everything, works across all season, casual, dressy etc.

ManhattanPopcorn · 03/10/2024 18:41

The quality is usually good but they do tend to be a bit on the heavy side if that bothers you.

teawamutu · 03/10/2024 20:01

I have a Marc Jacobs Natasha in almost that exact colour. It's a brilliant bag, the colour goes with everything and the leather is fabulous.

ShadesOfPemberley · 03/10/2024 20:21

Bag has been ordered… for anyone who’s as invested in this as I am, I will post again when it arrives… 😂

very grateful for all the advice!

Fabulous, glad you ordered it @ShadesOfPemberley . Look forward to seeing your updates!

canyouseemyhousefromhere · 03/10/2024 22:03

I can't get excited about bags. I've had a Debenhams's one for about 25 years & it's still very presentable & cost me about £15.

That said I wholeheartedly agree that you should spend your gift card on something you love & wouldn't buy for yourself -go for it!

Tangled123 · 04/10/2024 13:07

I think buying something you want but wouldn’t normally buy because it’s too expensive is a perfect use of gifted money. You don’t have to justify yourself to anyone though. If you want the bag, will use it, and don’t already have something similar, then go for it!

IrisApfel · 04/10/2024 13:46

I've been on MN for about 20 years and that is the first bag link I've opened and actually quite liked the bag!

Ruthietuthie · 04/10/2024 21:47

@IrisApfel, I agree! It really is lovely (and usually I open links and think yuck).

GettingStuffed · 04/10/2024 21:58

I prefer it in red or metallic

SeanMean · 04/10/2024 22:19

I love it!

I got a Polene in a similar colour and it’s so versatile.

ZenNudist · 05/10/2024 07:22

The bag is great, really useful and will last forever. Plus goes with most things

ShadesOfPemberley · 05/10/2024 14:23

Bag has arrived…!!!

I LOVE IT ❤️

(Just) enough room for my phone, keys x 2, card holder, lipstick and lip balm. Which is all I want if to hold.

Leather is gorgeous, and the colour even more fab than I thought.

it is indeed a tad on the heavy side for a small bag but not an issue from my point of view.

Thanks again to everyone who encouraged me to spend the gift card this way, DEF the right choice.

Fabulous. We need pictures!

CrowleyKitten · 15/10/2024 02:34

it's REALLY not to my taste, but my take is, it's better to top up your gift card a bit to get something you want that you'd never usually justify treating yourself to than to get several bits and pieces you could maybe individually justify buying.
if you love it, go for it. it's not to my taste, but I'm sure whoever got you the voucher would be delighted if you used it towards treating yourself to something you would otherwise never even think about justifying getting for yourself

RavenhairedRachel · 19/10/2024 17:54

If you like it go for it. It's a great bag lovely colour too. Cement makes me chuckle 😃

mdinbc · 19/10/2024 18:03

Good for you, I'm glad you loved it when it arrived! You will get many years of wear from a good quality bag, and think about your generous relative often.
