Is this appropriate for a formal dinner/awards ceremony?

Please help!

I have a formal work evening event coming-up. I am menopausal, very puffy, and not feeling great about my body. I therefore do not want to show my legs, arms, chest, anything really! I would like to look nice though if possible Grin

I am size 16 and 5 ft 8.

Would this dress be appropriate?

Thank you

You wouldn't wear a ball gown to a dinner, you'd wear it to a ball to dance.

Brides have people to help them with chairs.

The Apothecaries concur with me: "Avoid wearing voluminous dresses for a dinner because they’re not practical."

Edited

It's not a ball gown. Honestly some of you need to get out more.

No, but it's long at the back and hugely wide and likely to get stuck under the chair legs.

SquatWeightaMinute · 09/09/2024 22:43

That red dress has to be a joke surely!

I can’t see your original choice OP as the king didn’t work for me but I love all three in your other post.

It really won't. Fine not to like it but the risk of chair leg related incidents as a reason to avoid it is just silly.

I take it that you've never caught your chair leg, office chair castor, or shoe in the hem of your A-line maxi skirt?

I had to shorten one of mine because the bottom got damaged in my office chair castors on my work from home days.

No. Why would I?

No. Why would I?

Because long skirts reach the floor when you sit down in them?

And? Today I wore a long sleeved version of this dress.
Cabbages & Roses dress

On top I wore a previous season's version of this coat.
Cabbages & Roses coat

I'm 5' 2" or 3". No chair leg incidents to report.

This is my current favourite dress. No chair leg incidents here either.
Klements dress

And yet, "I had to shorten one of mine because the bottom got damaged in my office chair castors on my work from home days" and the Apothecaries' "Avoid wearing voluminous dresses for a dinner because they’re not practical."

You might get away with it (luck? some kind of dress management technique?) but some others won't.

Am I the only one who can't see the original dress? The link just takes me to a generic Reiss front page. Could anyone possibly post another link please?

Work and trade sector evening events don't, in my experience of many, tend to be full on formal in the way genuinely social black tie events are. Particularly if they're mid week.

I'm going to a specific sector awards event in October which I've gone to for years. Some dresses will be more formal than the one you've picked, others less. I will be wearing the same dress I wore last year- the navy version of this silk dress.

Pauw silk dress

While this is a beautiful dress, wow the price!

It's a staple style for that brand. I bought mine in 2017 when it was €450. I've worn it loads. I don't have a problem about wearing a formal dress more than once. Next month will be it's third outing in a row to the same annual event and it's been there on previous occasions.

It is lovely and €450 is a good price. It's definitely a staple. I wish I had somewhere formal to go once a year, let alone once a month! Ah the joys of life with small children.

Love the Pauw dress. It’s beautiful. Even nicer in navy! Lucky you @IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle

Let us know how you get on OP.

The first one in your latest post is perfect.

No sure about the second one.

I like the third one but don't think it's worth the money.

I agree with this poster

All I see is a formal black evening dress with a big split up showing the leg - I was wondering why people were saying it was casual..?

That's the home page for the new season. The dress is no longer on the website.
