Is this appropriate for a formal dinner/awards ceremony?

Please help!

I have a formal work evening event coming-up. I am menopausal, very puffy, and not feeling great about my body. I therefore do not want to show my legs, arms, chest, anything really! I would like to look nice though if possible Grin

I am size 16 and 5 ft 8.

Would this dress be appropriate?

Thank you

Thanks both.

The invitation says "formal evening wear."

No, its a day dress, sorry.

You need a cocktail dress or long dress.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 05/09/2024 21:20

I like the 3rd Phase Eight dress but it looks less expensive than it is. I don't like the other 2 Phase Eight dresses.

Ilovemyshed · 05/09/2024 21:23

You could also wear long black trousers and a satin or sparkly top.

dudsville · 05/09/2024 21:27

The 1st two phase 8 dresses are perfect op, really pretty. I also agree that your 1st choice isn't quite evening wear.

BraveStarr · 05/09/2024 21:35

Thank you all so much. I have decided to go for the first Phase Eight dress. Really appreciate all of your help

Good choice op in that first phase 8 dress op! It's very nice

Thank you all. I haven't been to an event like this for years so don't have a clue what to wear.

It doesn't say black tie specifically on the invitation.

If it’s the kind of awards event I’m off to in a couple of weeks, that dress will be perfect.

mitogoshi · 05/09/2024 22:09

It's fine dressed up with heels, silk wrap and jewellery. It's work and not black tie.

mitogoshi · 05/09/2024 22:10

Look at Scarlett and Jo, they have many suitable in larger sizes

The OP is a 16. All mainstream brands go up to 16 or 18. Why are posters reccomending Scarlett & Jo?

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 05/09/2024 22:36

Great as long as you're very slim and tall.

Needtofixmyageingskin · 05/09/2024 22:53

All 3 of those are gorgeous!

Something like this would suit your requirements and be appropriate.

This dress is hideous.

MaidOfAle · 06/09/2024 00:04

The dress you linked to has sold out in 16.

Find the person who is organising the event and ask for female-specific dress code guidance. If they claim to be unsure (often the case if the organiser is male) then ask for photos of earlier iterations of this event.

I prefer your first choice OP. I was looking at dresses in your budget. I love these Roksanda Jigsaw collaborations

That crimson parachute is a) hideous and b) will get caught under chair legs and torn.

The thread title says "dinner“. The OP needs something she can sit at a dining table in.

No problem that you think it's hideous (it's not) but your second objection is completely bizarre.

There's no more material than there would be in a ballgown or a wedding dress. Are chairleg related incidents common in your world?

I find Phase Eight really good for stuff like this, and doesn’t break the bank.

BlanklyMyDear · 06/09/2024 01:13

Must you choose the Phase Eight if you haven’t bought it already! It’s so depressingly dated and unimaginative. Completely undistinguished. (Though I am sure you are, in yourself.)

Goldengamer · 06/09/2024 01:43

First or second are both lovely , third too expensive and not as nice imo .

NonsuchCastle · 06/09/2024 04:00

Yes, it's a lovely dress. Whatever you wear, you should feel comfortable in it, not worrying about this and that. You'll be great - size 16 and 5 feet 8 is fine.

NonsuchCastle · 06/09/2024 04:03

StormingNorman · 05/09/2024 19:33

Is It black tie? If it is, I would say it might be too casual.

I doubt it's Buckingham Palace black tie. At formal work do's some people will be in silk cocktail dresses, some in long dresses, some in cotton etc. Styles and versions of "formal" always vary. I think the floral Reiss dress is fine.
