Is this appropriate for a formal dinner/awards ceremony?

Please help!

I have a formal work evening event coming-up. I am menopausal, very puffy, and not feeling great about my body. I therefore do not want to show my legs, arms, chest, anything really! I would like to look nice though if possible Grin

I am size 16 and 5 ft 8.

Would this dress be appropriate?

Thank you

Yes.

HundredMilesAnHour · 05/09/2024 19:10

Depending on how formal the event is, I think it's a bit too casual sorry. How formal is formal?

BraveStarr · 05/09/2024 19:21

Thanks both.

The invitation says "formal evening wear."

Too casual

Chewbecca · 05/09/2024 19:31

Almost, but not quite IMO because it is floral and unstructured. Sorry.

Work and trade sector evening events don't, in my experience of many, tend to be full on formal in the way genuinely social black tie events are. Particularly if they're mid week.

I'm going to a specific sector awards event in October which I've gone to for years. Some dresses will be more formal than the one you've picked, others less. I will be wearing the same dress I wore last year- the navy version of this silk dress.

I think it’s fine for a formal evening event; have been to a few and that would be perfect. (there’ll be some really dressed up and some not at all).
love the dress btw!
once your hair and make up is done you’ll look fab.

enjoy!

StormingNorman · 05/09/2024 19:33

Is It black tie? If it is, I would say it might be too casual.

Wow, that’s a beauty!

BraveStarr · 05/09/2024 19:35

Thank you all. I haven't been to an event like this for years so don't have a clue what to wear.

It doesn't say black tie specifically on the invitation.

This dress is gorgeous- I've checked and not in my size unfortunately!

I disagree.

I think "black tie" for work events is often more to steer men out of slobdom than women into full on evening dress. That dress would be fine for the black tie work event I'm going to next month.

Something like this would suit your requirements and be appropriate.

Catinavat · 05/09/2024 19:37

That dress will flatter no one and isn't formal enough.

Are you 'avin a laff? That's horrible- on several levels.

Mrsredlipstick · 05/09/2024 19:42

Jasper Conran has a few silk dresses in the sale as does The Fold.
I wear very formal clothes daily so I like a dress. Also look on marks and spencer Autograph.
I tend to wear flat evening shoes and a statement necklace.

BraveStarr · 05/09/2024 19:44

Thank you all. Lots to think about!

I think formal wear is definitely becoming more casual since covid.

It would work at some events but not for others. Even if it's a little too casual, it's not outrageous.

Any chance there's some photos from previous events a company website or linkedin, that might give you an indication of the typical attire.

Thanks, I've had a look at old photos and does look like most people are in full-length formal gowns.

Or could I get away with this?

I also like this, although it is a little over-budget

The first one in your latest post is perfect.

No sure about the second one.

I like the third one but don't think it's worth the money.
