Am I the only one who does NOT want pockets on dresses?

I've seen a few threads on here about dresses with pockets, people bemoaning the lack of pockets on dresses, praising brands who do put pockets on dresses... but I hate it!

If I am wearing a lovely floaty summer dress, what exactly am I going to be putting in my pockets? At a push I might put my car keys in a pocket but anything else, like my mobile or purse, is too heavy/bulky- invariably it pulls the side of the dress down and ruins the line/look of the lovely floatiness. On the flip side, sometimes the pockets are too big (too much fabric) so you end up with weird lumps/bumps in the fabric at the hips where the pockets lie, even with nothing in them.

I've started to buy a few autumn/winter dresses and even if thicker fabrics I am finding the same problem.

So to pockets on dresses I say, no thank you! Surely I can't be the only one?

I agree with you!
I don't need any extra bulk, especially at the hips!

Needmorelego · 05/09/2024 08:48

Where do you keep your hanky?

Swearwolf · 05/09/2024 08:49

I'm with you! Skirts too. It always pulls them downwards and it's so uncomfortable.

KnickerlessParsons · 05/09/2024 08:52

I disagree. I love pockets in dresses. But I do agree that some dresses and some fabrics don't lend themselves to dresses - I don't buy those dresses.

I love a pocket in a dress. You don’t keep anything in them! Apart from maybe a hand for an insouciant vibe.

Lots of brands position them so they don’t create bulk at the hips.

Topseyt123 · 05/09/2024 08:56

I want pockets in everything. Good, deep ones too.

Me too. But if you don't, surely you just don't use the pockets?

I don’t mind the existence of discreet pockets on a dress - but I wouldn’t want to keep anything important or weighty in them.

Firstly pockets at the hips never feel secure to me - too much danger of things falling out or being pick pocketed.

Secondly, as you say, stuffing them with wallets or glasses or whatever ruins the line of the garment - dresses, skirts or trousers.

(Huge ‘patch’ pockets on adult clothes? Always make the wearer look as if they’re off to play school.)

I also don’t like keeping anything in outer pockets on a blazer type jacket for the same reasons as above. The only type of pocket that’s of much use is an inner chest pocket (all too rare on women’s jackets and coats) preferably buttoned, which works for small valuable items.

Geneticsbunny · 05/09/2024 09:00

Yeah. Just don't use them if you don't want to. If they are well put in then they shouldn't cause any issues with bulk.

MujeresLibres · 05/09/2024 09:01

No, I agree with you. They often ruin the line of the item.

This. But the placement and manufacture of the pockets is also crucial — I can think of garments I own with perfectly-placed pockets, and others which I never use because they don’t ‘work’. I have a lovely black Cos shirt dress whose pockets are so well-placed I can stand with my hands in them and feel confident and comfortable, plus it looks good on the shape of the skirt.

Judellie · 05/09/2024 09:09

Wish more of my dresses had pockets.
But I wish even more that ALL jackets had inside pockets as standard - too many people having to keep valuables in their bras which must be really uncomfortable and bras are not comfy at the best of times!

Screamingabdabz · 05/09/2024 09:10

I love them. They make me feel swishy!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 05/09/2024 09:10

Having pockets reduces the incidence of me getting locked out of places by 95%, so I want them to stay.

Lincoln24 · 05/09/2024 09:11

Hard disagree, if a dress has pockets then on most occasions I don't need to take a bag: phone in one pocket, keys and lipstick in the other.

caringcarer · 05/09/2024 09:20

I don't want pockets.

Mikunia · 05/09/2024 09:20

I love pockets but I only ever put my hands in them. But I like having somewhere to put my hands.

SnapdragonToadflax · 05/09/2024 09:20

I basically don't buy dresses without pockets, so I completely disagree. If they're poorly placed or constructed they can spoil the line, but I have loads of dresses with almost invisible pockets, from very cheap to pricey. I mostly just put my hands in them! But it's also useful to have somewhere to put your phone, especially when you're just nipping out to do the school run or go for a walk.

The only exception would maybe be those dresses with an underslip and then a see-through, very light dress over the top? I can understand not having a pocket in that case.

Sedgwick · 05/09/2024 09:25

I want pockets.

summersways · 05/09/2024 09:28

I want them but don't use them to put anything in - just have this automatic reaction to try to put my hands in pockets. Then if they have pockets I have to remind myself to take my hands out because I fundamentally agree that hands in pockets aren't right for floaty dresses. So I like to know they are there as I find it soothing 😂

Frowningprovidence · 05/09/2024 09:29

I love pockets as they mean I don't need a bag. But they have to be the right pockets on the right outfit.

If the dress doesn't sit well with pockets, then I wouldn't like that but I would just not use the pocket.

Cobblersorchard · 05/09/2024 09:30

Team pockets here. My phone and keys live in them, plus assorted treasures handed to me by DD.
Couldn’t give a rats arse about ruining the line of a dress though, I’m more bothered about practicality.

llamalines · 05/09/2024 09:32

I want pockets in everything because I'm a human being who owns things, not a decorative ornament!

What do I put in them? Whatever I need. My phone, usually. I especially hate wearing dresses in the house with no pockets as I'm constantly forgetting where I put my phone if I have no pocket to put it in.

Oceangreyscale · 05/09/2024 09:34

Even a light dress can take some business cards and pockets are somewhere to put your hands. But most are fine with a phone in. I'll take it dragging the dress down slightly in order not to need a handbag.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 05/09/2024 09:35

I don’t need them either, found a seamstress and had them sewn up in shorts and dresses.
