Am I the only one who does NOT want pockets on dresses?

I've seen a few threads on here about dresses with pockets, people bemoaning the lack of pockets on dresses, praising brands who do put pockets on dresses... but I hate it!

If I am wearing a lovely floaty summer dress, what exactly am I going to be putting in my pockets? At a push I might put my car keys in a pocket but anything else, like my mobile or purse, is too heavy/bulky- invariably it pulls the side of the dress down and ruins the line/look of the lovely floatiness. On the flip side, sometimes the pockets are too big (too much fabric) so you end up with weird lumps/bumps in the fabric at the hips where the pockets lie, even with nothing in them.

I've started to buy a few autumn/winter dresses and even if thicker fabrics I am finding the same problem.

So to pockets on dresses I say, no thank you! Surely I can't be the only one?

You would need some pretty massive pockets to keep all those in, surely?

Depends on the style of trouser - tennis balls might be a stretch

It looks weird if clothes are close fitting and you've stuff bulging from the pockets. But I do like pockets in loose more casual skirts and dresses and jackets. Mainly to put my hands in though as I carry a bag anyway. I have small backpacks and crossbody bags for convenience.

Those items would fit comfortably in many men's pockets.

Edited

I don't think they would fir in my husband's pockets. And it's also why men are forever losing their keys etc when they fall out of their pockets. I would never put anything more than a tissue in mine.

I’m with you on this. I make my own dresses. The sewing community in general raves about being able to have pockets in dresses, but I never include them. They just ruin the line of the dress. As for putting things in them . . . . 😳

There is another thread about this at the moment, though, but: even if people can get dog leads, dog balls and dog poo bags into their pockets and not carry a bag, what are they going to do with the full bag of poo? Surely they don't put these in the pockets of their jeans? I suppose they could get one of these things that clips to the dog's harness...

Branster · 12/09/2024 07:05

@GreenTeaLikesMe but I don't think many people put a full bag in their carry bag anyway. It never crossed my mind to do that, ever. You just have to carry it until you find a bin?
Yes tennis balls require decent pockets.

helmettask · 12/09/2024 07:18

When are people putting their hands in their pockets?!
surely walking round it doesn’t work and when you’re sitting down the pockets wouldn’t be accessible?
are there many occasions when people are just standing still with their hands in their pocket?! I don’t get it!

I often walk or stand with my hands in my pockets. Many people do; have you never noticed?

Here where I am, you put the plastic poo bag into a zipup container which goes into your dog bag, which you always have with you when you have a dog.

PET PARADISE(ペットパラダイス) KIDS&OTHERS お出かけ・お散歩グッズ | 【通販】雑貨とペット用品の通販サイト | マザーガーデン&ペットパラダイス (creativeyoko.co.jp) For example. Although of course you don't have to buy a special bag, you can just use one you have already.

(I should stress that you do sometimes see abandoned dog poo here too, although not as often as in the UK, thank goodness)

There are almost never any dog poo bins here, in fact you don't often find normal rubbish bins in public places either. You have to be prepared to carry your rubbish with you and dispose of it at home, which includes doggy doo if you have a dog. I always warn visitors who come here, take a bag when you go out, or you may end up carrying rubbish awkwardly in your hands for ages and ages.

With councils in dire financial straits in the UK these days, bin collection is one of those things that always gets worse and worse, so the British may also have to start developing similar habits unless they want a lot of litter and dog poo bags all over the place.

The dresses I have are quite swingy and loose so yes, I can easily walk with hands in pockets. And yes, I stand about with my hands in them too, it's just comfortable...

Well, I’m an academic, so I will usually be standing or walking around on the dais for the duration of a 50-minute lecture. Sometimes I’ll be using a clicker to move on a slide, but if not, I will often have my hands in my pockets, whether that’s in a blazer or a dress. Likewise talking to colleagues in the corridor, or in the queue at the coffee place, or at a book launch or drinks reception. Or going around an art gallery? I’m sure there are lots more.

helmettask · 12/09/2024 11:16

I’m going to look out for it!
I think I must have been drilled not to walk with my hands in my pockets in case I fell over and I’m rarely standing around.
I never wear dresses anyway unless it’s for a special event so it’s never been an issue for me. I just put things in my jeans or coat pocket or hold onto them

badgerpatrol · 12/09/2024 11:42

I love pockets in a dress, really useful for just shoving your car keys/phone if you are running into the shops without a 'hand' bag and saves me having to shove them in my bra.

Also like them to put my hands in, there's something about putting my hands in my pockets which makes me feel very happy.

More pockets please!
If you hate them, just run a sewing machine up the length of the side seam and the snip them off (30 second job)

Please can someone start listing brands who always include pockets?
I know toast do, but their dresses aren't quite my style

Seasalt often have pockets

EBearhug · 12/09/2024 12:04

A lot depends on the style of dress and fabric. Clingy, sheer fabric or heavy velvet? Close-fitting or loose with a gathered skirt?

Are the pockets inset in the seam, or square pockets sewn more on the front? (I have them like that on a red velvet dress from Laura Ashley.)

But mostly, I do want pockets.

Tu at Sainsbury.

redtrain123 · 12/09/2024 12:07

I’m not keen either. I’m pear shaped so pockets sit on my hips, and accentuates them.

Nobody's Child usually have pockets in maxi/midi dresses, but they tend to be the boho style.

Pretty sure because of aforementioned reason, in that not all dresses are flattering with pockets.
