Am I the only one who does NOT want pockets on dresses?

I've seen a few threads on here about dresses with pockets, people bemoaning the lack of pockets on dresses, praising brands who do put pockets on dresses... but I hate it!

If I am wearing a lovely floaty summer dress, what exactly am I going to be putting in my pockets? At a push I might put my car keys in a pocket but anything else, like my mobile or purse, is too heavy/bulky- invariably it pulls the side of the dress down and ruins the line/look of the lovely floatiness. On the flip side, sometimes the pockets are too big (too much fabric) so you end up with weird lumps/bumps in the fabric at the hips where the pockets lie, even with nothing in them.

I've started to buy a few autumn/winter dresses and even if thicker fabrics I am finding the same problem.

So to pockets on dresses I say, no thank you! Surely I can't be the only one?

Hands. I love putting my hands in my dress pockets. I don’t put ‘stuff’ in them. I put my stuff in a small bag.

Sedgwick · 05/09/2024 10:56

@EliflurtleAndTheInfiniteMadness thanks for that link, very interesting to read.

Andoutcomethewolves · 05/09/2024 11:12

It depends on the dress or skirt. Some that are more structured and with thicker material can work well with pockets, but I wouldn't want pockets pulling down a floaty summer dress.

What really annoys me is women's trousers/skinny jeans etc which have FAKE pockets stitched in. Just why?? Why not make them real pockets if you're going for the pocket 'look' anyway??? Then people can choose whether to put things in there or not! I have three pairs of jeggings from M&S that are a lovely fit and look like they have both side and back pockets. But no. They've just cut a hole, hemmed it then stitched it closed again for some fucking weird reason.

TinaYouFatLard · 05/09/2024 12:58

I hate pockets in dresses. I am very pear shaped and the pockets tend to sit at my absolute widest point and accentuate my saddle bags even more.

The weird reason is so that they are a lovely fit.

I want pockets in everything because I'm a human being who owns things, not a decorative ornament!

What do I put in them? Whatever I need. My phone, usually. I especially hate wearing dresses in the house with no pockets as I'm constantly forgetting where I put my phone if I have no pocket to put it in.

This^

I'm with you @FeelingSad2024
I have wide hips. I really don't need pockets adding bulk. If I put things in the pocket of a dress or skirt it ruins the line and makes it bulky. I mean it's fine on a denim skirt or something but not on floaty, silky, or clingy fabrics.

Iwantamarshmallowman · 05/09/2024 20:26

agreed .. they had extra bulk to my hips and make me look massive and it's not like u could put anything in there anyway.

LividSummers · 05/09/2024 21:02

Whe needs the patriarchy when we have women preferring their clothes have "a smooth line" over function.

My four year old has pockets on every item he owns. Mostly to fill with rocks and feathers. I have to seek out pockets for my actual stuff, or if you're in M&S shopping for matching Christmas pyjamas, buy the men's, because they have pockets and the women's don't. Absolute cunty fuckers.

I just don’t use pockets so would rather my clothes didn’t have them. I carry my stuff in a bag, as that’s my preference. It’s not anti feminist to not want pockets. Like everything, women should have the choice.

"Got hands, in pockets..."!!!

All my lovely swishy dresses have pockets, and I love just mooching about, hand in pockets.

I love a pocket in a dress. You don’t keep anything in them! Apart from maybe a hand for an insouciant vibe.

Lots of brands position them so they don’t create bulk at the hips.

if I put my hands in my pockets I give less of an insouciant vibe and more of a ‘Liam Gallagher’ vibe.

But if you put stuff in pockets the stuff is lumpy against your body - not comfortable. And you need to remember to remove the stuff before you wash the items - very inconvenient.

I also care about how my clothes look and fit - that really isn't akin to patriarchal oppression. If others want to look like a lumpy sack that's fine, it's just not my choice Smile

MounjaroUser · 07/09/2024 14:53

I hate them - they ruin the shape of a dress.

I also hate breast pockets - what's the point of them?

suburburban · 07/09/2024 14:57

I like pockets for tissues which I inevitably leave in and they get washed

Summertimer · 07/09/2024 15:01

Depends on the type of dress. I’m not a floaty dress of summer person - more a jersey dress with pockets for my hayfever tissues. Smart shirt dress or denim dress for autumn/spring is also good with pockets as I need keys to hand in some jobs I do.

Evening and going out dresses I don’t want pockets

SoftPillowAllNight · 07/09/2024 15:02

The best use of pockets I've found is to keep a sanitary pad there when I'm on my period. That way I'm never in an awkward position esp at work where I'd need to run back & forth to change. And I def prefer specific brands so don't want the ones stocked in the toilets.
I make sure to wear a dress with pockets when I'm on my period now.

Agree, I’m wearing a t shirt with a pointless pocket. When washing it I need to carefully drape to dry to avoid ironing

angstypant · 07/09/2024 15:21

Totally agree. I always have enough things with me that I need a bag. Bare minimum:

Phone
Power bank
Tissues
Sunglasses + case
Lip balm
Keys

Often I'll also have reading glasses, small pouch with nail file, lipstick and powder. Maybe a pen...

But even the bare minimum requires a bag.

And as you say OP, it pulls the fabric down. Unless maybe the dress is made of canvas. I don't wear canvas dresses 😂

Plenty of space for all that if only we had decent pockets like men's clothes.

Yes there probably would be. I still prefer to carry those things in a bag.

EBearhug · 07/09/2024 23:58

I always check pockets before putting a load in. I wouldn’t say it's very inconvenient- takes an extra few seconds, and extends the life of my washing machine, bank cards, phone, etc.

Fozzleyplum · 08/09/2024 00:09

I'm team "no pockets"; I find that if a pocket is big enough to hold things like phones and keys securely, it will also pull the garment out of shape and be uncomfortable. I prefer a bag and if all I want to carry is my phone and maybe a bank card, I use a small cross body phone bag.

Yes this.
I love pockets and have been thinking I need to sew pockets into my clothes that don't have them.

When younger, I always carried a bag, but then I developed awful shoulder pain in one side that made bag carrying painful and I'm sure my spine was affected
Now pockets are the best!

NewName24 · 08/09/2024 00:58

I have to disagree with you OP.
Pockets are such a plus point on a dress.

Pockets to put things in.
Pockets to sometimes put your hands in.
Just the option that they are there, and that I choose clothing for a practical reason - you know, to wear, and sometimes to carry something with me.
