Tops for WFH Calls on Camera

In colder weather my default options are solid colour cashmere jumpers. They look smart, comfortable, professional enough for client and colleagues calls, with make up and a little jewellery. Soft jeans on the bottom.

But I am a bit stumped for a warmer weather attire. What to wear on top? T-shirts are too casual, the shirts do not do anything for me sitting down, blouses are blousy (I do love the look of Love and Roses but do not own anything due to being polyester). To office I wear a blazer, but it’s overkill at home.

What does one wear to look polished? Would be grateful for conceptual ideas and specific links.

Long sleeved fitted plain T shirts, if you like jewellery you could put a necklace with it. No logos or garish patterns.
Looks business like, and they will not know if you paid £100 or £5

I keep a smart lightweight cardigan next to me for impromptu calls which has come in very handy. Means you can wear whatever you like and do the cardigan up high enough to cover what's underneath whether that's a vest or a thermal top!

I've got a couple of thin linen knits from Poetry that are good for WFH. "Short sleeve knit" on their website

I don't suit shirts in real life (don't like things tucked in, apple shape etc) but online I look better in a shirt than any of my other warm weather options. I have a linen shirt which has worked well today. I like the look of the skipper shirt!

TheMildManneredMilitant · 18/07/2024 21:18

I like the Uniqlo short sleeve rayon blouses - I have the white version and it's smart, cool and comfortable www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/product/rayon-short-sleeved-blouse-464721.html?dwvar_464721_color=COL00&dwvar_464721_size=SMA001

These do the job fine for wfh on camera and in the office in warmer weather and work with any skirt or trousers. A thin knit and a reasonable price www.marksandspencer.com/ribbed-crew-neck-knitted-top/p/clp60650621?colour=ECRU&extid=ps_ps-pla-pmax_ggl_ww_ch__-UK-_-_bau_smec_counterfactual&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw-uK0BhC0ARIsANQtgGOCZMNPn6_Zhikcnps6Dvtoopf5WL9k-jdVE9mUrcQE2CtOK0CvdjIaAp7pEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

I wear the Uniqlo skipper blouse for virtual meetings. Cool and comfortable. Smart collar to show a necklace. No buttons that would result in awkward puckers; so it sits well on the front.

Ooh these are nice!

Ineedanewsofa · 18/07/2024 21:29

I’ve got a couple of these t-shirts https://www.hollandcooper.com/products/v-neck-tee-white in different colours which look smart on camera.
I’ve also got an ancient lightweight short sleeve jumper from H&M and another one from Zara which I throw on over a vest top if the phone rings on hot days.
Final tip is to always put jewellery on, it can make even the most basic black t-shirt look like smart workwear on camera (harder to get away with in person because of the fabric) and great earrings keep the focus on your face

Are you able to take calls on a tablet or without the camera being on, so it can be at an angle that makes you feel happier with a shirt on?

Doggymummar · 18/07/2024 22:31

I have m and s linen blend t shirts 5 white and three black, this is their third summer and they still look fab.

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 19/07/2024 02:53

I wear plain tshirts (and, like you, cashmere jumpers in winter).

I keep a blazer and a scarf on the back of my chair, will throw either or both on for video meetings. And a tube of tinted lipgloss handy.

westcoastdweller · 19/07/2024 05:28

Exactly the same answer from me as last poster. I wear plain cotton T-shirts and have a 3/4 sleeve, light blazer on back of my office chair to add for any external or more formal meetings. Long sleeve thicker one for over jumpers in winter.

I rarely notice colleagues' clothing. The only ones I do and think look poor (for our industry - it is meant to be semi formal/professional dress - are those that wear hoodies, slogan/logo tops or anything very low/strappy. Luckily not come up with my direct reports.

Thanks, all. Interesting that we all come back to some owlet of lightweight knit.

Plain T-shirts are fine. I wear them for remote board meetings . Just look tidy with a professional background. No one will notice what you’re wearing.

RoseMarigoldViolet · 19/07/2024 06:12

Marks and Spencer do some good short sleeved cotton shirts. They look smart around the collar area. I wear these for ‘better’ wfh calls. And Uniqlo T-shirts for lesser calls.

CrumpledBankNote · 19/07/2024 06:26

@GinForBreakfast £200 to look like absolute shit 😂

You are joking? Your suggestions are hideous.

Onekidnoclue · 19/07/2024 06:36

@AndYesTheWeeDonkeys I might be the only one but I love the tops you shared. Cos vibes but less structured.

Sanch1 · 19/07/2024 06:41

No one in my business cares, we all mostly wear at home casual clothes on wfh teams calls and no one bats an eyelid. Will probably be gym gear for me today as I won't get time to shower before my first meeting 😂

ClonedSquare · 19/07/2024 06:52

I wear the patterned t-shirts from M&S. I just select patterns which are fairly muted, not the hot pink or loud patterns. They're very thin material but somehow not see-through, so keep me cool. On camera I find they don't look explicitly like a t-shirt. Even in the office, with something hiding the sleeves they don't look any different than a shell top or something.

PinkTonic · 19/07/2024 08:05

I like fine linen or cotton knit short sleeved sweaters/tops. I have them from Jigsaw, White Company, Me + Em, Poetry, Boden etc.

I style my hair and wear light makeup.

In winter I wear cashmere sweaters.

Everyone on internal teams calls looks smart.

Parsipsnoup · 19/07/2024 08:37

I have a linen maxi dress and a few midi dresses in heavy T-shirt cotton in plain bright colours. All have a plain round neckline so no cleavage concerns on camera. They’re really comfortable to wear and look smart on camera. I generally wear mid size earrings as well - not huge statement ones, but big enough to be noticeable and I think they lift the look. I also have some linen tops (boat/round neck) which I usually wear with linen trousers.

Last summer I discovered that layering a light chiffon top over the cotton dresses made them slightly smarter for external video calls too.
