Please help. What tops with these (strangely) coloured trousers?

Is this impossible? What colours (other than white) would go with these trousers? Any specific tops you could link to that would go well?

I'm scared of looking like I've fallen of the back of the circus wagon.

I don't want black because I think there is a lot in that advice that if you put black with a bright colour it makes you look like you work in a theme park/Butlins red coat. and these are well on the way to clown costume.

Asking because I saw that Alex Jones had worn them with a lilac top and I'd never have thought of putting that with it. I think the lilac looks better than white because the white puts the whole focus on the trousers where as the lilac is more balanced. Looking for other suggestions like that but totally struggling!

Angelina Striped Wide Leg Trousers By KITRI Studio

Angelina Striped Wide Leg Trousers | KITRI Studio

Parasol-perfect. These palazzo trousers are ready for a stroll by the Riviera. Her mid-waist flatters the figure whilst her flared legs add a little '80s je ne sais quoi. Pair with matching Hadley Striped Top for the ultimate easy-breezy summer look.

Navy?

Mrsjayy · 13/07/2024 10:20

I love the colour Alex is wearing With them if it was me though I'd probably go for a yellow t shirt I'm quite a "safe" dresser.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 13/07/2024 10:26

The lilac is awful. Of course things don't have to match and contrast is good but the lilac is an inspid colour and the top itself is boring.

Kitri is a brand which has a definite vibe to it. I'd start looking at Kitri tops.

I think the lilac looks better than white because the white puts the whole focus on the trousers where as the lilac is more balanced.

I thought that lilac top is so awful that it unbalanced the outfit and focused attention on it.

LoobyDoop2 · 13/07/2024 13:39

I think neutral beige/linen/stone type colours would work.

ClownsFear · 13/07/2024 13:39

@Metempsychosis navy is interesting idea.

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle thanks for your suggestions. i think that was the point about the lilac top is that it detracts from the @@ -ness of the the trousers. I thought it was more balancing myself

the jacket you suggested is interesting. I wouldn't be for the bare skin but the idea of cream with a bit of red on it is a good one.

PS: that's a hard no to the co-ordinating top! I'm aiming for less clown effect not more!!

Lots of options.

A deep fuscia pink
Navy
Cream or off white
Apricot

Would be my first thoughts

maslinpan · 13/07/2024 13:47

Dark green or khaki might tone it down a bit

ClownsFear · 13/07/2024 13:54

@PiggieWig @maslinpan
do you have any suggestions/links to particular tops you've seen that might work?
I was wondering if something long line might be better (show less trouser)

@MrsGhastlyCrumb
thats interesting =I would never have thought of that colour working but I can see it would.

how do you do that? think of a colour combo that might work that isn't standard.
I suppose that's how stylists work but I honestly have no clue.

@ClownsFear I have a creative background- i quite enjoy these sorts of threads so I can have a play. Think someone else mentioned green up thread as well. Red and white strips with khaki is a design staple though.

Fitted top with an elegant neck detail is my vote, whatever colour you go with: either a high neck with simple classy lines (sleeveless if you're comfortable with that) or a v neck. I think black could also work with a silky high neck. IMO. ☺️

MrsGhastlyCrumb · 13/07/2024 14:32

This kind of cut: turns out they have red, but you get the idea!

Actually, just looked at the trousers again- dont don't do red! 😂

ketzeleh · 13/07/2024 14:37

Off the top of my head I'd suggest a dark rich brown or burgundy, maybe khaki depending on the shade, and certain pinks, but with anything like this I think the best thing is to go somewhere like John Lewis and try on a few different options (including things that you might not expect to match at first sight). It's too difficult to gauge what will work just from looking at photos online.

I have a pair of shoes that I loved on sight and that everyone I showed them to hated (black patent leather heels with brassy hobnails that make them look a bit like clogs). To be honest I didn't know what I could wear them with, I just had a hunch they'd look amazing with the right outfit, and they did. I took them shopping with me when I needed a black tie dress and found that they went startlingly well with a hot pink ruffly asymmetric thing that I probably wouldn't have glanced at twice if I'd only seen it online. You need to experiment in person.

(FWIW I think the lilac is nasty. And agree that trying tops on 'in the flesh' is a good idea.)

ClownsFear · 13/07/2024 14:47

@MrsGhastlyCrumb that silk fred olive green silky top is lovely. not sure it's my colour though.
I'm a winter and suit these sorts of colours. I've just been too check and there is nothing approaching either khaki or olive green.

@MrsGhastlyCrumb you are obvously very good at this kind of thing as I'd never have picked that as a colour or style and it is very lovely and I think it would go well. sadly make me look like a washed out pasty thing

I think I might explore some navy stuff as that seems like a good (safe) bet

The persimmon shade from that chart might work ? Not sure on navy...
