Please help. What tops with these (strangely) coloured trousers?

Is this impossible? What colours (other than white) would go with these trousers? Any specific tops you could link to that would go well?

I'm scared of looking like I've fallen of the back of the circus wagon.

I don't want black because I think there is a lot in that advice that if you put black with a bright colour it makes you look like you work in a theme park/Butlins red coat. and these are well on the way to clown costume.

Asking because I saw that Alex Jones had worn them with a lilac top and I'd never have thought of putting that with it. I think the lilac looks better than white because the white puts the whole focus on the trousers where as the lilac is more balanced. Looking for other suggestions like that but totally struggling!

Parasol-perfect. These palazzo trousers are ready for a stroll by the Riviera. Her mid-waist flatters the figure whilst her flared legs add a little '80s je ne sais quoi. Pair with matching Hadley Striped Top for the ultimate easy-breezy summer look.

Potentially this could work with the ‘sleek’ brief:

White, cream or ecru shades, but I would put on a wideish belt in a darker colour to draw the eye and pull it all together.

I think a dark belt with a light top and those trousers would cut her in half

@MrsGhastlyCrumb and my style advisors

I found this which is a navy version of the olive green one you posted above
would this work do you think or is it too dark navy?

Hmm. I really like that top, and the cut of it works I think. I'm not sure it's possible to be certain about the colours when they're on a screen, and were shot in different lighting. Are you under any time pressure?

I would be tempted to order a few different bits and return things that don't work.

Part of the issue, I think, is the light stripes could be a strong cream or a pale acid-yellow, and so finding complimentary colours that also look right with your complexion would be best done by looking at the fabrics when wearing them in daylight...

ScamanthaBrick · 14/07/2024 21:21

I would avoid navy unless you are going for this kind of vibe…

They are neither in the flesh. They are closer to a more pale lemon but an intense pale lemon. Not intense lemon. but pale intense lemon.

@ScamanthaBrick brilliant but that is a bit brighter than navy!

I'd put a cropped dark denim shirt with those trousers. Or a plain tee shirt and cropped denim jacket

Iwant2befree · 15/07/2024 12:08

Navy is always a winner IMO with orange and could pair with navy sandals . I love the trousers fab!

OuterSpaceCadet · 15/07/2024 13:16

Going back to your OP and your desire to avoid looking like a theme park employee, I'd focus on texture of the material and style of top. Blazers, polo shirts and plain t shirts would be too theme park adjacent. But drapes, knits, lace, silky or sheer fabrics are never usually part of a uniform.

ClownsFear · 15/07/2024 14:00

good tip about materials @OuterSpaceCadet - thanks wouldn't have thought of it

I'd try a denim jacket over a white vest.

MrsGhastlyCrumb · 17/07/2024 08:06

Agree about textures.
