Too suggestive for a wedding guest dress?

doyoulikemyyams · 07/07/2024 18:44

My sister in law is getting remarried this November in Scotland, so I've been on the hunt for a cold-weather-appropriate dress.

Clan colours are blues and greens so to match with DP in his kilt I've been looking for the same.

I found this, which I really like for its simplicity and the velvet - but is the height of the leg split a bit cheeky for a family wedding? Or do the long sleeves balance it out ok?

I think it looks suggestive cos of the way she's standing, if you stood more normal n less like a model it will be fine.

sosolonglondon · 07/07/2024 18:51

Agree that it’s the pose that makes it suggestive. Just don’t pose like that and it’s lovely.

xyz111 · 07/07/2024 19:03

You could always get a seamstress to stitch the slit if it feels too high. But it's a lovely dress.

doyoulikemyyams · 07/07/2024 19:21

You're probably all quite right - why didn't that occur to me?!

Now just to hope I don't end up roasting hot by the end of the night in velvet and sleeves, having thought mainly about keeping warm... I guess that's where the high slit comes into its own 😂

Unless you intend standing in one place for the entire wedding any movement at all will show the split off. As will sitting down.

GoldFrame · 07/07/2024 22:12

This is lovely, and we are glam for weddings up here, so it’s perfect

doyoulikemyyams · 08/07/2024 10:09

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle sure – I don't expect the split to be invisible, hence my question.

I'm guessing it's a 'yes' from you?

Scotland in November won't you have wooly tights on underneath? 😂

Purplecatshopaholic · 08/07/2024 10:17

Lovely dress. I would defo sew the spilt up a bit, and it’s good to go. Will look great with the colour scheme. If it’s a Scottish wedding won’t there be dancing though? Can you rock a Gay Gordons in it do you think?

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 08/07/2024 10:19

Gorgeous dress but the split is too much if you’re going during the day.

Don’t English weddings have dancing? Only kidding - any Scottish wedding I’ve been to (I’m Scottish) there’s been no ceilidh music apart from possibly Auld Langs at the end and that’s just a drunken rabble!

I'd still go in speakable layers because I over heat quickly and sometimes these venues have fires 🔥 (hopefully in fireplaces 🤣🤣) or the heating on FAR too hot, though it's in Scotland so probably not 🤣🤣

joke before anyone gets themselves vexed

@doyoulikemyyams I think it'll be fine if you don't parade around like a cat in season.🤣 see what's it's like on, you can always put a few stitches in the top of the slit.

PrincessMee · 08/07/2024 10:32

If you are after velvet why don't you wait until the dresses come in in the Autumn/winter collections?

MumApril1990 · 08/07/2024 10:33

I love that for a winter wedding

MumApril1990 · 08/07/2024 10:34

Depending on your height it might not even be too high a slit and if it is you could stitch it to the knee surely?

doyoulikemyyams · 08/07/2024 10:35

@Purplecatshopaholic I've totally been weighing up the dancing vs warmth debate too!

Ceilidh or no, there will most definitely be dancing, and the last thing I want is to turn into a sweaty uncomfortable mess by 10pm. But I also want to be cosy and embrace the wintery-ness...

Maybe I need to keep looking, and see if I can find something a bit shorter...

@PrincessMee that would most definitely be the sensible thing to do, and I'll probably end up doing exactly that. I'm just excited and have some time on my hands this weekend so I've got my shop on😂

I don't like the dress so , no, it would be a no. If it had no split, yes. I'm not sure why you think the split won't be visible. It's kind of the point of splits.

Dweetfidilove · 08/07/2024 11:49

It's a lovely dress - yes.

doyoulikemyyams · 08/07/2024 11:53

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle your misreading / ignoring details of my posts is turning out to be pretty spectacular, so I think I'll bow out of this interaction😉Feel free to pop back if you take the time to read anything I've said properly.

LittleMonks11 · 08/07/2024 11:53

It's a no from me. It's too high a split and too long. Why don't you get it for a Christmas party or New Year's Eve or something if you really like it. I just can't picture this as a wedding guest dress.

doyoulikemyyams · 08/07/2024 11:55

Fair enough, @LittleMonks11 - good to get a range of opinions!

MoreDangerousThanAWomanScorned · 08/07/2024 11:57

How tall are you? It says the model is 5'8 so it's likely to be a bit more modest on you if you're quite a bit shorter.

WednesdayWeWearPink · 08/07/2024 11:57

It may be a wedding in Scotland but the venue will have heating, as will whatever hotel you stay in. So you don’t need to wrap up warm for it!

SiobhanSharpe · 08/07/2024 11:57

It's a lovely dress, not at all inappropriate for a winter wedding. Sew the split up a bit if you're not that comfortable with it but wear it and be happy.

Alwaystimeforacupoftea · 08/07/2024 11:59

Why can't people show their thighs at weddings again? I don't think the guests I've seen at weddings got that memo, there's always been plenty of short and fairly tight dresses over the years. I think it's stunning, and if you wear tights, it will be not scandalous at all (not that it is in the first place IMO). I'd love my guests to wear fabulous clothes!
