Too suggestive for a wedding guest dress?

My sister in law is getting remarried this November in Scotland, so I've been on the hunt for a cold-weather-appropriate dress.

Clan colours are blues and greens so to match with DP in his kilt I've been looking for the same.

I found this, which I really like for its simplicity and the velvet - but is the height of the leg split a bit cheeky for a family wedding? Or do the long sleeves balance it out ok?

You'll be boiling in it! Honestly, choose a dress you can dance in, then wear a smart wool coat over it with a nice hat or fascinator.

Inthemosquitogarden · 09/07/2024 07:56

If you’re 5’4 then I’m afraid it’s going to be dragging along the ground. I’d go for a shorter version, Hush usually has velvet dresses but you might need to wait for autumn stock to come in.

Is it an outdoor wedding? I don’t think that dress would keep you warm anyway indoors or outdoors what with the sleeve length, neckline and huge split.

They do have heated venues in Scotland and some of those older hotels are deceptively warm. I think you’ll be incredibly hot and uncomfortable in that, especially if you’re planning on dancing.

What material is it made of? The split looks awkward and like it would have to be altered for the height and size of the wearer.

It would be a hard no from me, not because it looks too “suggestive”, just because it looks dated and wholly impractical for dancing. I appreciate it’s a matter of personal preference.

You need to click on the word 'this' in OP's third paragraph - that's the link.

Looking at the video, OP, the split seems stitched to lie open like that. I don't think you can just sew it up a bit. It's an open split iyswim.

This is a good point. I had assumed it was a single cut split but I think it is an open split.

This would look so weird at any wedding I’ve been to up here, unless you were the bride’s nun aunt

I'm "up here" too. That dress looks fine. It's the Jessica Rabbit dress that would look odd.

LaMarschallin · 09/07/2024 08:28

Looking at the video the split has a definite touch of "I'm Angelina Jolie. So...this is my leg" about it.
Other than that, it looks quite old fashioned to me - a cross between the wicked queen in Snow White and what I imagine someone like Shirley Bassey would wear in concert.
No wedding I've been to recently has been "glam" in that sort of way.
However, they've not been in Scotland - is that the difference?

paisley256 · 09/07/2024 08:41

I like it but I'd be worried about being hot and bothered if the venue is very heated. I tend to overheat a lot though.

How about this - similar neckline but fuller skirt https://www.jdwilliams.co.uk/shop/joanna-hope-maxi-tie-waist-dress/DT922/product/details/show.action?pdBoUid=1010&optionColour=Navy&optionSize=26&promo=6202&gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMInLmZoMmZhwMVH5FQBh3dRAhpEAQYByABEgI_M_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
with one of these for warmth (and can then take it off for dancing) https://www.wolfandbadger.com/uk/corrie-bratter-returns-cropped-blazer-in-navy/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=18057196750&utm_content=&gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIrPrc-cmZhwMV45RQBh2ybwhtEAQYGiABEgKWD_D_BwE

I'm now fascinated by the look at Scottish weddings, having never been to one. Can anyone expand?

Well I can't. I would be surprised to see that dress at a wedding.

People make an effort, but it's hardly My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding (in general). Not sure what certain PPs are on about. Men in bridal party plus some others will wear a kilt, most will wear a suit. Women will wear a nice dress/jumpsuit/trouser suit, same as English weddings. This year I've worn dresses from Mango, Monsoon and Oliver Bonas to weddings. However, OP's dress would not be out of place and I wouldn't be shocked or anything. I've worn something similar in the past (although high neck) but it was a friend's wedding and I was in my 20s and a bit more skint (it was Boohoo). I'd go more demure to a family wedding, or any wedding now tbh, probably because styles have changed. I definitely think OP could do better, certainly for that price. The Wyse dress linked above is gorgeous. It's the wrong time of year to buy velvet.

The ones I’ve been to recently have been full on glam

Is that Scottish weddings in general though, GoldFrame, or more your friends' and family's vibe wherever you'd be living?Smile

Yes, in general. It’s very different to the things suggested in here for wedding guest outfits

Saz12 · 10/07/2024 22:12

Personally, a split + dancing = a very long split developing! At the very least you'd need to reinforce the stitching at the top of the split to stop the seam from giving up (unless youre a very sedate dancer)!

For me, ankle-length velvet is a bit ott for a wedding guest, theres always the risk of looking like youre a bridesmaid or matron of honour. But Ive not been to a wedding in years...!
