Too suggestive for a wedding guest dress?

doyoulikemyyams · 07/07/2024 18:44

My sister in law is getting remarried this November in Scotland, so I've been on the hunt for a cold-weather-appropriate dress.

Clan colours are blues and greens so to match with DP in his kilt I've been looking for the same.

I found this, which I really like for its simplicity and the velvet - but is the height of the leg split a bit cheeky for a family wedding? Or do the long sleeves balance it out ok?

Honestly, in Scotland this will be modest. It’s the thing to be super glam for weddings up here. Regardless of weather!

How tall are you? It says the model is 5'8 so it's likely to be a bit more modest on you if you're quite a bit shorter.

I'm 5'4 - so I'd likely need to hem it a little, and you're right, that would affect where the split reached. Smart thinking, @MoreDangerousThanAWomanScorned!

I love the dress but would be tempted to layer clothing. A dress with a matching velvet jacket or bolero would stop you getting overheated.
What kind of venue is it?

Batgin · 08/07/2024 12:04

I'd wear this fpor a wedding - it's gorgeous and fitting for a winter wedding! Every wedding I've been to people have been in mini dresses or bodycon... Don't see why people can't show a bit of thigh, must have missed the jump back in time

I agree with this. If you plan to dance it’s good to have layers to remove. I’d also go for a tea/midi length dress for the free movement, but then I’m that one up dancing all night, shoes kicked off and tripping over the hem.

doyoulikemyyams · 08/07/2024 12:13

@BaronessBomburst it's a hotel - but I have a hunch the building's quite old, rather than a modern fancy hotel.

@Batgin I've seen a lot of people in bodycons and minis for weddings, too, but somehow those feel less suggestive than this one to me!

Rational or not, there's a Jessica Rabbit-ness to this that feels more sexy to me than a mini-dress would, which is what gave me the initial worry it might be too much. But maybe that says more about what I think is sexy than what's appropriate for a wedding!

I don't think it's too suggestive, and if I was getting married I'd be delighted to see you turning up as a guest in such a beautiful dress - it's absolutely gorgeous! So simple and elegant, and perfect for the season.

doyoulikemyyams · 08/07/2024 12:15

@BaronessBomburst that's beautiful – and it has a CAPE!

Unfortunately I have a scar on my back that I'm not a big fan of, so I tend to avoid open backs like that, but it's a lovely suggestion. Thank you!

It's a lovely dress, and I'd say yes, you could wear it for a wedding.
BUT...

I think you'll alter the line of the dress too much if you sew up the split. Unless there is some give in the fabric, I think you need the split to be able to move properly (and especially to dance).
I also think hemming it could be problematic. Velvet is a bit of a bugger to work with. I'd only have that done by a competent seamstress (and I say that as someone who makes all their own clothes - I wouldn't attempt to take up that dress). It could look pretty shoddy and not fall right.

And finally, it's very likely to be polyester, and a tight fitting polyester bodice would not be my first choice of fabric for something where it's likely to be warm and there will be dancing.

For the price of that dress (plus alterations), I reckon there is something better out there...

In that case I think it'll end up being a really flattering split, which will give some movement and glam to the dress, but not risk flashing your knickers! It's a lovely dress :)

MonsteraMama · 08/07/2024 12:21

I think it's gorgeous. All the Scottish weddings I've been to this would be quite demure and modest comparatively so I wouldn't worry about it. Glam is the done thing!

turnipsarelush · 08/07/2024 12:28

Its a bit much with the velvet AND the split. One or the other

doyoulikemyyams · 08/07/2024 12:51

@TheTripThatWasnt interesting! I know nothing about dressmaking, so this is really helpful to read - thank you!

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle your misreading / ignoring details of my posts is turning out to be pretty spectacular, so I think I'll bow out of this interaction😉Feel free to pop back if you take the time to read anything I've said properly.

I misread you said invisible/ visible.

The split is going to be very visible- you (general you) either like that or you don't. I've no strong feelings on whether it's suitable or not suitable for a wedding. I don't like the dress but buying a dress with a split and then sewing it up as some have suggested seems a bit daft. The dress looks as if there wouldn't be much material to spare so there's a possibility you'll end up with the same split even if you sew it up.

aintnospringchicken · 08/07/2024 13:04

Lovely dress ,but agree about the split being a wee bitty too long.
The question is could you do a Strip the Willow without tripping up.
A good old Scottish ceilidh has to have the carnage of a Strip the Willow or it's not a proper ceilidh😉

gimmegimmegimmeagin · 08/07/2024 13:58

Buy it, wear it, and get that leg out and rock it. You can't have too much sass! I think it's a lovely dress

fridaynight1 · 08/07/2024 14:15

I think it's perfect for a Scottish winter wedding. I'd order and try it on - it's the only way you are going to know for sure.

MadameMassiveSalad · 08/07/2024 15:09

I can't see it

You need to click on the word 'this' in OP's third paragraph - that's the link.

Looking at the video, OP, the split seems stitched to lie open like that. I don't think you can just sew it up a bit. It's an open split iyswim.

Saxendi · 08/07/2024 20:57

Another velvet dress not quite so glamorous but a cotton velvet so would be cooler.

I think it's gorgeous and would look lovely at a wedding

Mintearo7 · 08/07/2024 21:34

It’s lovely, just think about sitting down and your leg being potentially on show. I still think it’s fine though!

Stravaig · 08/07/2024 21:46

Definitely too suggestive! That's not a full skirt which has then been slit open to allow the odd glimpse of leg if you happen to move a certain way. It's a skirt with an inverted V removed, so it always falls open, and always shows your legs (and plenty else too). It's not something you can sew up a bit for more modesty. Plus, thigh slit dresses always look like the wearer is trying too hard.

Agree with others that velvet is going to be too hot, especially cheap artificial velvets.

Last caveat, if you go for it anyway, please choose a large enough size! MN is awash in threads where people have squeezed themselves into sausage-skin dresses in the name of bodycon. It never looks good, and won't be comfortable for a long event.

This would look so weird at any wedding I’ve been to up here, unless you were the bride’s nun aunt
