Please suggest shoes for this dress

I’ve bought this dress for my 50th birthday party. It was a bit of an impulse splurge and I half expected to be sending it back, however it actually looks pretty good on me (skims my peri tummy) and my dc and dh all voted it thumbs up, so I think I might keep it.

The problem is what shoes to put with it. The shop has styled it with long boots, which really works, but the party is an August garden party, so I don’t think boots are appropriate.

I’ve got gold high heels (chunky heel rather than stiletto), but I’m not convinced they look quite right. Maybe one of the colours in the dress would be better? But what style? Feel like it needs something funky rather than elegant.

Any suggestions? What would you put with it?

(By the way, feel free to say you hate it)

Love the dress! Which colour combo have you ordered?

VenusClapTrap · 27/05/2024 10:38

Thanks, I’ve got the ivory background with bright colours one.

Those are similar to the ones I’ve already got, but wasn’t quite sure about the combo.

That's an amazing dress, happy 50th!

geoger · 27/05/2024 10:58

Beautiful dress! Bright pink strappy sandals would suit
Might order it in the twilight combo

Gorgeous dress - I think chunky gold heels would look great, and if you matched with gold jewellery it would probably pull it all a bit more together IYSWIM? Alternatively neutral espadrilles would work as well, something like this (although mindful of grass stains, you'd have to treat them first): https://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-lloret-suede-espadrille-sandals/neutral/p5091736?size=5&s_ppc=2dx_mixed_fashion_BAU&tmad=c&tmcampid=2&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw3tCyBhDBARIsAEY0XNmUjkVu3jydfa3OX5nki6GClLfXSTePIGF0zSY_wEtqg_Y8tBjwqogaAmgEEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

How short does the dress come up?

Wordless · 27/05/2024 11:19

Fabulous dress! (Don’t love viscose but it would have been massively more expensive in silk.)

I’d say you want completely flat strappy sandals in whichever of the dress colours works best with your skin tone.

Various choices from Zara below. I’m sure similar things available everywhere.

Thanks everyone for the vote of confidence! I used to be so certain about fashion choices; nowadays I’m wracked with indecision (and mistake buys).

Thanks also for the suggestions. This is how short it comes, and my existing gold shoes. Which aren’t actually as chunky as the ones suggested here, so maybe that’s why I’m not sure about them, and chunkier is the way forward.

Honestly you want barely there sandals - so the dress is the star. Anything chunky or heeled will look as if you haven’t understood the dress.

And you’ll look so much more cool and relaxed with almost bare feet at your own party …

Love the gold chunky heels with it, looking for inspiration for my own 50th party this year !

Happyinarcon · 27/05/2024 11:37

That looks amazing! I would add a chunky gold bangle and be done.

LemonySnickets · 27/05/2024 11:38

Exactly what I'd go for! 😍

VenusClapTrap · 27/05/2024 11:40

Wordless that’s a really interesting take. I’m short so I always wear heels when I dress up. But the vibe of the dress is indeed relaxed rather than formal, so that could be why my heels look wrong rather than the chunkiness.

What a beautiful dress! I think it will work well with most shoes. I think a chunkier shoe is definitely more in keeping with current fashion. That said you could certainly do a very minimal sandal too. It will work well with either flats or heels I think.

The shoes you have paired with it do dress it “up” a bit more. A chunkier heel or flat sandal will dress it down if you want it more casual.

Iloveshihtzus · 27/05/2024 11:48

Oh OP, that’s gorgeous and you look amazing in that photo. I think the outfit is perfect. You don’t need to get other shoes - except perhaps a spare pair for late evening, and if, like me, you get sore feet dancing in high heels. But if you don’t, just stick with those.

Have a fabulous party!

VenusClapTrap · 27/05/2024 12:43

Thanks everyone!

I’d do tan or gold flat strappy sandals. Heels don’t work qirh that at all.

Easipeelerie · 27/05/2024 13:40

It’s not right with heels. It needs either the contrast of DM boots or for an event, flattish gold barely there sandals (gladiator style).

bittertwisted · 27/05/2024 13:54

I would wear it with gold espadrille wedges
But I'm a very small scouse girl from the 80s who wears only heels or trainers
So don't listen to me 😂😂

Wordless · 27/05/2024 14:02

I’m a fairly small, originally tangentially Liverpudlian girl from the 60s - and honestly you’d have to kill me stone dead before I’d ever be seen in espadrille wedges.

The horror …

Mine are very beautiful and Sophia Webster 😂
