Please suggest shoes for this dress

I’ve bought this dress for my 50th birthday party. It was a bit of an impulse splurge and I half expected to be sending it back, however it actually looks pretty good on me (skims my peri tummy) and my dc and dh all voted it thumbs up, so I think I might keep it.

The problem is what shoes to put with it. The shop has styled it with long boots, which really works, but the party is an August garden party, so I don’t think boots are appropriate.

I’ve got gold high heels (chunky heel rather than stiletto), but I’m not convinced they look quite right. Maybe one of the colours in the dress would be better? But what style? Feel like it needs something funky rather than elegant.

Any suggestions? What would you put with it?

(By the way, feel free to say you hate it)

My immediate reaction was box fresh, white or cream Converse All Star boots for an ‘at home’ garden party. Or, as others have suggested simple, flat, tan or gold barely there sandals.

Aquamarine1029 · 27/05/2024 14:19

I absolutely LOVE the dress, but I personally don't think those chunky heels work with the dress at all. They detract from it. Flat, barely there gold sandals would be perfect with gold jewelry to complete the look.

VenusClapTrap · 27/05/2024 15:28

Ok so flat gold barely there sandals are getting a lot of votes. I will have scout around for some of those. I rather like Ancient Greek so this could be an excellent excuse to buy some!

I love the yellow clogs @PerfectTravelTote ; but I wear clogs all the time, so probably should branch out into something different for my party! Then again, I don’t normally wear ones with heels, so…

As an aside, I’ve also got a wedding coming up in July. Do you lot reckon this dress is wedding appropriate? The dress code is ‘colourful and summery smart’.

That’s a super cute dress for a wedding I think. Looks great on you.

That's a beautiful dress but I don't think it's strappy/delicate enough for gold heels. I'd prefer tan chunkyish flats like gladiator sandals. It's a gorgeous fabric but as it's essentially T shirt shape I think that would balance it better plus it'd be comfier and look more relaxed x

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 27/05/2024 19:04

I would wear structured ballet flats and eyeliner to make it look a little 1960s but to be honest I don't love it.

determinedtomakethiswork · 27/05/2024 20:05

I completely agree with wordless. Flat and strappy and gold, that's what you need.

It's got a real festival vibe about it and you wouldn't be wearing heels there.

Absolutely beautiful dress.

BurntBroccoli · 27/05/2024 20:08

I absolutely love the fabric but it looks like a long quite scruffy T-shirt? Or is that the style nowadays?

If I was 20, tanned and slim I would wear it with white cowboy boots or heeled DMs and a black bodycon mini skirt.

theansweris42 · 27/05/2024 21:20

I think heels to offset the casual cut of the (fab) dress and you have great legs.
And in a colour from the dress. I love the colour of the purple flower.

That’s what I was thinking, it’s a long tshirt!

White cowboy boots sound good though.

Sillystrumpet · 27/05/2024 21:50

I’m afraid I also think it looks like an oversized t shirt, and the op forgot to put her bottom half on.

TheChosenTwo · 27/05/2024 21:56

I think some really chunky sandals tbh, it’s quite a shapeless tshirt sort of dress and think it will look its best contrasted with some bold footwear.
I do think it’s pretty but it’s basically a wafty long tshirt!

Turmerictolly · 27/05/2024 23:25

I'm sorry, I'm not keen on it at all. It looks scruffy and cheap and is too short (for my taste). I think it would look great on a teenager at a festival with DM boots.

However, I'm not wearing it and if you like it and feel comfortable in it then I also think gladiator sandals would look best not high heels.

DailyEnergyCrisis · 28/05/2024 07:54

I know it’s probably meant to be oversized but I think it looks too big and shapeless given it’s definitely meant to be a ‘nice dress’.

Another one here who thinks it looks a bit like an over sized T shirt, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing for a festival, beach holiday, or your summer party. As for reusing it for a wedding… Nope, too informal in my view.

IdontPracticeSanteria · 28/05/2024 08:54

Love the colours and the print etc

But it is a strange length. Looks a bit off. Looks like you're wearing just a t-shirt and forgot to put on your bottom half.

It would be stunning if it was marginally longer.

FeelingSad2024 · 28/05/2024 11:10

No suggestions on the shoes but just wanted to say you've got great legs! I'd definitely be wearing a mini dress for my 50th if I had legs like that!

VenusClapTrap · 28/05/2024 15:06

Thank you for all the compliments! Feeling warm and fuzzy. I like minis because my legs are my best feature - mid section is a shitshow and the less said about the melting face the better. Age…

It is meant to be oversized t-shirt dress in style. Not everyone’s cup of tea I know. I like that it skims the dodgy bits - recently I have felt like a sausage in anything fitted. But I was a bit uncertain that it could verge too much towards ‘sack of spuds’ rather than ‘relaxed boho’ hence my original indecision. Always good to get some honest feedback from MNetters!

I have just impulse bought some cream cowboy boots on Vinted. They were a bargain - only worn once, originally quite pricey, so if the weather is as cold as today then they won’t be at all inappropriate! I do think the dress cries out for boots to balance it. But in the event of getting actual summer weather, then I’ll pick up some gladiator sandals. I like the Hush ones that someone linked, or I might treat myself to some Ancient Greek ones.

Thanks everyone!

I love it! You look incredible in it. In my shoe book, either chunky deep pink metallic sandals or cowboy boots. I would want a heel, especially with a t-shirt shape. (look at Esska shoes)

I personally wouldn't wear flat sandals, but I can see the case that is being made for them here. Happy birthday!
