Please suggest shoes for this dress

I’ve bought this dress for my 50th birthday party. It was a bit of an impulse splurge and I half expected to be sending it back, however it actually looks pretty good on me (skims my peri tummy) and my dc and dh all voted it thumbs up, so I think I might keep it.

The problem is what shoes to put with it. The shop has styled it with long boots, which really works, but the party is an August garden party, so I don’t think boots are appropriate.

I’ve got gold high heels (chunky heel rather than stiletto), but I’m not convinced they look quite right. Maybe one of the colours in the dress would be better? But what style? Feel like it needs something funky rather than elegant.

Any suggestions? What would you put with it?

(By the way, feel free to say you hate it)

Thank you for all the compliments! Feeling warm and fuzzy. I like minis because my legs are my best feature - mid section is a shitshow and the less said about the melting face the better. Age…

It is meant to be oversized t-shirt dress in style. Not everyone’s cup of tea I know. I like that it skims the dodgy bits - recently I have felt like a sausage in anything fitted. But I was a bit uncertain that it could verge too much towards ‘sack of spuds’ rather than ‘relaxed boho’ hence my original indecision. Always good to get some honest feedback from MNetters!

I have just impulse bought some cream cowboy boots on Vinted. They were a bargain - only worn once, originally quite pricey, so if the weather is as cold as today then they won’t be at all inappropriate! I do think the dress cries out for boots to balance it. But in the event of getting actual summer weather, then I’ll pick up some gladiator sandals. I like the Hush ones that someone linked, or I might treat myself to some Ancient Greek ones.

Thanks everyone!

Great you went for the cowboy boots 😊.
I think as well perhaps a gold belt worn around hips? It might just give you a bit more shape and still skim over bits you don't want on show?

Just a point for wedding wear:-

  • belt it
  • consider a long line jacket/blazer
  • no cowboy boots but clogs or shoes with a heel (whatever height you like)
  • if you wear shoes or sandals where you can wear tights maybe consider those

I think some really chunky sandals tbh, it’s quite a shapeless tshirt sort of dress and think it will look its best contrasted with some bold footwear.
I do think it’s pretty but it’s basically a wafty long tshirt!

Same. I would wear it with a bottom half. You're obviously slim, Op but I think only the very young can get away with such a short dress.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 04/06/2024 20:46

Missing the point completely but £368 for a viscose dress! 😱

Hmm, I get what you’re saying but not sure I agree. I’m same age as op, amd similar size and build. And to be honest, I’d wear it on holiday (well if it wasn’t so expensive as I don’t tend to wear expensive stuff on holiday ) , but I’d not wear it out in the uk and certainly not with a pair of cowboy boots. But I don’t think my daughter would either. So I’m not sure it’s age more style.

at 50 I now try to move to more elegant clothes, but the op would likely think I was really very frumpy rather than elegant.

for example I have four of these skirts in different colours, and then so many other variations on this sort of skirt.

https://www.marksandspencer.com/satin-midaxi-slip-skirt/p/clp22584816?color=GREEN&prevPage=srp#intid=pid_pg1pip31g4r8c2%7Cprodflag_Online%2520Only

and wear them with this sort of top, or like the model and a cami if the weather suits, or a cashmere jumper and either white leather trainers or boots in autumn/winger. The rest of the time I’m in jeans.

https://www.johnlewis.com/mango-karl-ribbed-knit-vest-top/black/p111857462?size=XXS&srsltid=AfmBOoqoIdtpdgbVI24lZamkKPjSFIYLNywPGOdwBdkc9LAw3d7dMYd4FsQ

my young adult daughter would wear neither style, neither the op or mine. Where as I’d look at the op and think good for her, she looks fun but No way I’d wear it. But she’d prob look at me and say Christ that’s frumpy and I’d not go out in that..

so I think it’s nothing about age, and everything ro do with personal style. We are all different and if we feel happy and confident that’s all that matters.

@sillystrumpet I'm also same age as you and Op. I agree with you about wearing the dress on holiday. I absolutely love those silky slip skirts and will definitely be looking into them. Thank you for the link! You don't sound frumpy at all.

VenusClapTrap · 05/06/2024 21:36

I don’t think your taste is frumpy either, @Sillystrumpet, I think it’s classy.

I like to ring the changes with my style - sometimes classic, sometimes edgy (well, a bit…), sometimes glam, often just plain scruffy 😁.

I don’t tend to overthink it - if I like something I wear it. I don’t really have a ‘look’.

The cowboy boots arrived and I love them. So now it’s on the weather whether I wear those or gladiator sandals, which I remembered dd has and which fit me.

See I quite envy that, I think you will look like you’re a lot of fun as said,

@Bbq1 thanks, they wash and iron really well. Stretchy waist too which is always a plus…😄

It’s not right with heels. It needs either the contrast of DM boots or for an event, flattish gold barely there sandals (gladiator style).

This and don't bend over, even if you drop your phone. Heels ruin it.

Oinkypig · 06/06/2024 18:21

That dress is gorgeous and I am so tempted even though I 1- don’t usually spend that much on clothes but mostly 2- I don’t have an event to wear it too.

I think a mix of a few gold bangles both chunky and really thin ones a really chunky gold ring (maybe a big flower) on the other hand and either the cowboy boots or flat gold sandals/gladiator style

You look fabulous in it!

SloaneStreetVandal · 06/06/2024 19:55

I'm assuming you're wearing cut offs or bike shorts underneath??? Just wear whatever you'd wear with cut offs (you wouldn't wear dressy heeled sandals with cut offs I'd hope! 😂😉). Cowboy boots will work, but only if they're ankle high. Or chunky sandals in either white or tan.

I like t shirt dresses, but not quite as short, nor as oversized.

YouSayChorizoIsayChorizo · 06/06/2024 22:41

Wordless · 27/05/2024 11:25

Honestly you want barely there sandals - so the dress is the star. Anything chunky or heeled will look as if you haven’t understood the dress.

And you’ll look so much more cool and relaxed with almost bare feet at your own party …

^^ this for sure, if your feet can take the exposure! Fabulous dress, but there's something off-kilter about the shape and pattern that says 'edgy' not 'pretty', and it needs styling accordingly.

CinnamonJellyBeans · 06/06/2024 22:56

You have great legs,

Flat sandals, slim gold bangle.

Definitely not heels.

If you wear cowboy boots, you'll make the whole thing look like a novelty costume or like you've tried too hard.

imnotthatkindofmum · 06/06/2024 23:07

I would wear my doc marten sandals with this tbh. Even at a garden party. I think they look good with everything.....I realise most people wouldn't agree though!

Absolutely. The cowboy boots will ruin the amazing choice you made with that dress. Your legs are totally gorgeous and shouldn't be hidden in clunky cowboy boots for your big birthday.

VenusClapTrap · 08/06/2024 20:03

Lots more comments! Thank you everyone. I don’t want to look like a ‘novelty costume’ eeek! Am now rethinking the cowboy boots… but that’s ok because I have other stuff they will look good with, so not wasted. I will probably go with the gladiator sandals. Unless it’s pouring with rain, then all bets are off wellies.

I actually came on here to say some pimped up wellies! I've seen some fab half height wellies in jewel colours.

Would work if it's grey and a bbq vibe

Otherwise, I agree flat glads are the way forward
