Are skirts and tights now old fashioned?

Went in to the office today, wore a belted pencil skirt with tights.

Noticed that I was pretty much the only one wearing tights, are they now outdated?

Do you mean sheer tights?

Ioverslept · 24/04/2024 21:03

What were they wearing instead? If bare legs perhaps they feel it's too warm or late in season for tights?

PurpleJustice · 24/04/2024 21:04

I didn't know tights were a fashion accessory, just an essential, basic piece of clothing. Like a coat or pair of socks?

Sure you can get more or less fashionable versions, but they'll never go out of fashion completely.

I wear tights to work most days.

Notts276 · 24/04/2024 21:06

Whenever I've put a skirt and tights on I've had the same feeling as you OP. It all feels a bit old fashioned and everyone else is wearing trousers.

BananaLambo · 24/04/2024 21:10

To be fair, I don’t think I’ve seen a pencil skirt since I watched Mad Men.

coxesorangepippin · 24/04/2024 21:11

Yeah sheer tights

Are pencil skirts outdated too??! I love them

It's the footwear trend. Flat boots and trainers.
Doesn't sit well with skirts and thin tights especially the summer.

WfP · 24/04/2024 21:40

I was still wearing pencil skirts, tights and heels till around 10 years ago. No one in the business I work in dresses that way anymore

EveryOtherNameTaken · 24/04/2024 21:46

Not worn pencil skirt and sheer tights since the 90s, especially with heels.

A shortish skirt with thick tights and flat boots, yes.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 24/04/2024 21:48

I wear tights to work with a dress, but with thick tights and clompy flat boots

DGPP · 24/04/2024 21:50

Pencil skirts and tights are old fashioned yes. Thick tights, dresses and a line skirts with boots are fine

JoanOgden · 24/04/2024 21:50

Sheer tights and heels have been dated for ages. I feel like black opaques and ankle boots are beginning to go the same way, which is quite upsetting because I love them

bombastix · 24/04/2024 21:53

I never see it at the office any more. Pencil skirts and tights, plus heels? Almost fancy dress. When I started work it was mainstream.

suburburban · 24/04/2024 21:55

I wear dresses with opaque tights

I thought long pencil skirts were fashionable with a front split this year

I wear trousers some days

Jentefieldroamer · 24/04/2024 22:05

Pencil skirts are in, worn with ankle strap sandals, thong mules etc Maybe tan your legs for updated look? I think Zara have some in stock, or try insta for ideas.

TheOGCCL · 24/04/2024 22:09

I think somehow skirts and low denier tights look quite formal and that isn't in trend anymore in a lot of offices.

Ioverslept · 24/04/2024 22:09

Ok, I don't follow fashion or work in a trendy place or office. The dress code is smart and fairly formal but quite relaxed so some people go more casual, no trainers but anything from flat boots of varying lengths to high heels. I think classics never go out of date, but maybe that is a dated view! I wear mostly skirts and dresses and prefer thick woolly or cotton rich tights as are warmer and more durable. But when it gets warmer I really struggle to what to wear with shoes when it's too warm for boots and not warm enough for smart sandals and end up wearing trousers more often that I'd like just so I can wear socks with shoes. What do you all wear with skirts and shoes in summer? Tights? Socks? Those horrible hidy feet cover thingies that always get eaten up by the shoes? I hate them! Have tried different ones but all end up slipping forward under the heel and curling under the foot, ugh!

MissCherryCakeyBun · 24/04/2024 22:09

At what point does it matter? Are you happy warm comfy ?

mynameiscalypso · 24/04/2024 22:10

I think sheer tights are a bit old fashioned these days; I certainly haven't worn them for at least a decade, probably more like 15 years. I do love a good pencil skirt though as it suits my shape. I wear one with thick black tights though.

Edited

Yes those sockies are the work of the devil

I would love to know whose feet they stay on

Whatsinthiscrumble · 24/04/2024 22:15

I stopped wearing sheer tights with heels several years ago as felt it looked dated back then.

Still wear thick black tights with more chunky footwear in winter or longer skirts with bare legs in summer

RosesAndHellebores · 24/04/2024 22:16

I thought sheer tights were on their way back. I'll probably wear them for some of May until it's warm enough to go bare legged.

The shops are full of longish straight skirts. Not pencil skirts as I remember them but long and straight. They would be fine with sheer tights and loafers or block heel Mary Janes.

Noting that I am not trendy.

WeightoftheWorld · 24/04/2024 22:21

I never wear sheer tights and nobody else in my workplace ever does ejther. But do sometimes wear pencil skirt, I don't think they're out completely yet as some others wear them too.

I wear all kinds to my office job but the dress code is fairly chilled.

Never ever wear heels though and nobody else ever does either. But that's not a fashion thing for me just a comfort one.

Whycantiwinmillionsandsquillions · 24/04/2024 22:21

I wear tights.
Its far too cold not to.
It will have to be much warmer than this before I go bare legged.
I either wear black plaques or sheer nude tights.
I wear trousers too but not for work when it’s hot.
