Are skirts and tights now old fashioned?

Went in to the office today, wore a belted pencil skirt with tights.

Noticed that I was pretty much the only one wearing tights, are they now outdated?

Opaques - autocorrected!

suki1964 · 24/04/2024 22:23

Sod fashion, I love a good hip hugging , knee skimming pencil skirt, but the foot wear has changed so the tights are no longer de-rigour

I know do bare leg, and now a bit of fake colour - a moistening cream rather then a fake tan. And the shoes, well I like a bit of a heel so still love my kitten heels which I think ( and Im probably so wrong amongst the fashionistas) compliment the shape of the skirt

Thatglad · 24/04/2024 22:24

I hate to say it but I think I sheer tights now only look good on young, slim women. With mini skirts or shorts

Remoteaccess · 24/04/2024 22:26

Yes very old fashioned, can't quite imagine it...

OriginalFloorboards · 24/04/2024 22:28

Glad this post came up I was wondering this for a knee length dress for a wedding. I no longer work in an office but from home so wasn’t sure. Not quite wanting to bare my legs this weekend as they are white and bruised from horses. Not sure what I’ll do.

Aswellisnotoneword · 24/04/2024 22:30

Sheer tights have been out of fashion for so long I'm quite shocked you hadn't noticed until now! A decade at least- maybe two? (I'm getting old and it's all a bit of a blur.)

bombastix · 24/04/2024 22:33

Seriously you seem brave you tight wearers. I find it freezing

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 24/04/2024 22:36

It feels a bit Teresa May

FusionChefGeoff · 24/04/2024 22:38

I think for weddings etc then sheer tights with heels and a lovely dress / skirt is fine but I agree with pp that office wear is much less formal nowadays and you'd look overdressed

Ok, I don't follow fashion or work in a trendy place or office. The dress code is smart and fairly formal but quite relaxed so some people go more casual, no trainers but anything from flat boots of varying lengths to high heels. I think classics never go out of date, but maybe that is a dated view! I wear mostly skirts and dresses and prefer thick woolly or cotton rich tights as are warmer and more durable. But when it gets warmer I really struggle to what to wear with shoes when it's too warm for boots and not warm enough for smart sandals and end up wearing trousers more often that I'd like just so I can wear socks with shoes. What do you all wear with skirts and shoes in summer? Tights? Socks? Those horrible hidy feet cover thingies that always get eaten up by the shoes? I hate them! Have tried different ones but all end up slipping forward under the heel and curling under the foot, ugh!

Edited

Just wear the shoes with no socks. Quite common where I live (not the UK) and no-one wears tights in summer here, it's far too hot.

Chickoletta · 24/04/2024 22:41

Depends what you mean by a pencil skirt. All of the super cool 6th form girls at my school are wearing long, fitted jersey skirts with boots. Tube skirts? I wear a more sensible version and do wear tights with them. My legs are not yet summer ready!

madameparis · 24/04/2024 22:42

I haven’t worn sheer/tan tights for about 10 years.

I used to love wearing dresses with black tights and boots through the winter, but no-one wears that style anymore where I live and work. Think I last wore those 1-2 years ago.

People around me wear dresses or skirts with white trainers or wide leg trousers.

LocalHobo · 24/04/2024 22:44

Kate Middleton (Princess Kate) wears pencil skirts and sheer tights (and in her 40's) and the general consensus seems to be she looks fine.

Crispynoodle · 24/04/2024 22:45

I wore a spring like knee length floral dress today with sheer tights and baby pink metallic loafers. Tbf I am nearly 58 so have the freedom to wear what I like. I've never been able to go bare legged though!

She's a Princess. She doesn't wear red nail polish or red lipstick. She has to conform. Yes she looks good, but in a restricted Princess way.

I love a pencil skirt but not worn one for years now, I like how they are styled here

@Jentefieldroamer Are you in U.K.? It’s not sandal weather here yet, not by a mile! Still 10c or lower.

greengreyblue · 24/04/2024 22:54

I feel most comfortable in wide leg trousers and smart, laceless trainers for work in school at the mo.

idontlikealdi · 24/04/2024 22:56

Pencil skirt and sheer tights screams office wear pre covid to me. I sold all linen Vinted so someone is wearing them though.

I agree. I think bare legs with formal clothes looks bizarre - as if you've forgotten to get fully dressed.Even worse when it's cold.

Thanks, shoes with no socks doesn't feel right to me, I don't like the idea of sweaty feet in shoes or rubbing, maybe it's a sensory issue

Baer leg with shoes? What do you wear on your feet?

MrsApplepants · 24/04/2024 23:14

Pencil skirt, sheer tights and heels all looks a bit 1980s. Kinda works with cerise lipstick, big hair and a silky blouse. Not a good look

Maybe it's a UK thing as other posters have expressed horror at wearing shoes and no tights. Honestly though, hardly anyone here wears tights in summer, it's just too hot. Some people do wear those tiny socklets, but most just wear their shoes and nothing else. Even my late DM, in her eighties, had bare legs and shoes.

WhereAreWeNow · 25/04/2024 06:41

I like pencil skirts OP but every time I wear one it feels a bit off and dated. I think it's about the fabric and the length. I'm not ready to chuck/sell mine yet but I have put them away because I'm just not wearing them at the moment.
