Are skirts and tights now old fashioned?

Went in to the office today, wore a belted pencil skirt with tights.

Noticed that I was pretty much the only one wearing tights, are they now outdated?

I didn't know tights were a fashion accessory, just an essential, basic piece of clothing. Like a coat or pair of socks?

Sure you can get more or less fashionable versions, but they'll never go out of fashion completely.

I wear tights to work most days.

Exactly that. I wear tights to work every day. (Unless it's really hot!). As essential as my knickers!

Skirts seem to have fallen out a bit now though. It's mainly dresses around here.

I Am Very Annoyed @MNHQ!

I mentioned a well known store in my post above and find those initials have automatically been transformed into a link. Which I absolutely do not want. Why am I being forced to promote a store I haven’t bought clothes (other than slightly unsatisfactory tights) from this century?

nonottoday · 25/04/2024 14:29

Short skirts and opaques aren't.

In my office some people don't even wear shoes! Kick them off and curl in their chairs! Thankfully with socks! I've always worked in a casual dress industry.

Someone came in with heels on and was so out of place - made me a bit sad as I really need/like the height.

JustEatTheOneInTheBallPit · 25/04/2024 14:35

God I loved pencil skirts with sheer tights. This period in fashion neatly aligned with when I was thin and young and didn't feel the cold. I work from home now in thick dresses, black tights and slippers. Plus cardigan. And heater. And coffee (which I make myself, despite being fat).

HideTheCroissants · 25/04/2024 20:40

I wear sheer tights most days I’m at work. Nude, navy or black depending on rest of outfit. Pencil skirts or dresses. In the winter I’ll sometimes wear opaque with a shorter skirt. In the truly summer months then I’m bare legged. I sometimes wear tailored trousers but it’s mainly skirts and dresses. (I normally wear heeled shoes or boots too).

What is with the triple question marks? How hard is it to understand that the air con in some buildings makes them cold to be in with bare legs?

And “most offices are air-conditioned where I live”- most offices are air-conditioned where everyone lives??? (To use your style)

Edited

I live in a country which has far more hot weather than the UK, so I doubt that UK offices are colder than they are here. Shops are usually kept a freezer like temps in summer. No-one I know has ever complained about having cold legs, but of course Brits are special and more sensitive than most people, or that is how it appears on MN.

I wouldn't know if most offices in the UK are air conditioned or not, I wouldn't have assumed so due to your weather.

Bare feet in proper shoes or (shudder) trainers is GROSS! Bare feet in sandals only, purlease.
I have lots of pencil skirts, most with a bit of stretch. That just below the knee straight skirt with flats look is vey mid 90s as I remember.
I like ankle boots with a shorter pencil skirt, or knee boots with a below the knee one ( so there’s no actual leg showing). Sheer or coloured tights are essential in spring and I couldn’t care less about fashion. Style is not fashion.

That's your opinion only. Lots of people wear shoes/trainers without socks, and I can assure you it is not GROSS! Maybe not everyone has your level of smelly feet? I have bare legs long past the time of year for wearing sandals and there is no way I am wearing socks with shoes. I do wear them with my latest trainers, but only because they rub against my toe.

RockTheRunway · 25/04/2024 22:15

I have a body hugging black and white pencil skirt just below the knee. Wear it with white loose t shirt or black silk blouse or cashmere jumper and bare leg in summer and or 20 den black sheer tights in winter. Yes, it’s Mad Men and nobody wears this anymore but I feel myself and womanly in it, and makes a nice contrast to jogging bottom WFH days.

Citrusandginger · 25/04/2024 22:19

I don't care unfashionable, I'd be happy to embrace sheer tights and pencil skirts right now if only it was warm enough.

So sick of trousers and opaque tights. I have a wardrobe full of dresses to wear with ballet shoes, wedges or sandals. It's nearly May after all. It's time my legs were let out.

Offices in the UK are usually air conditioned and basically the same temperature year round.

I dunno if it's my nationality but I am too cold at 19/20 degrees to have bare legs.

Perhaps if I wheel out my other passport (dual national here), I will be less cold in the office tomorrow

Quite different to offices here then, which are kept cold in summer and warm in winter.

My office in Hong Kong was exactly the same temperature as my office in London and my office in São Paulo. Cold corporate temperature geared to men in trousers.

nothingsforgotten seems to be terribly worked up by the idea that some women choose leg coverings she doesn't approve of.

I couldn't care less what women wear on their legs, but the original question was about skirts and tights being old fashioned. In summer tights are old fashioned here, but once again it's such a big deal in the UK, it's too cold, their legs aren't tanned enough, they couldn't possibly wear shoes without tights/socks, blah, blah, blah. The UK seems quite old fashioned in a lot of ways, but you just carry on.

Whaleway · 26/04/2024 07:53

It depends ok the type of office, surely? If it's more casual, nobody will wear a skirt. It's potentially seen as more dressy than smart trousers but nothing wrong with looking done up.

I wear corduroy skirt with tights on my skirt days

MyFirstLittlePony · 26/04/2024 09:57

@nothingsforgotten

why are you so angry about how women in the UK feel about wearing tights 😂😂😂

I have a vague sense that nude tights are making a comeback? Have seen some Convos about "oiled tights"...

Phoebefail · 26/04/2024 10:14

As an older woman who was very much used to more formal office practices, skirts in subdued shades and sheer tights were the norm. Upthread there was a mention of thrush. I suffered so switched to more old fashioned stockings.

'American Tan' and 'tobacco' have just popped up in my brain.

What a silly thing to say. We all have different bodies and some people feel the cold more than others. And in my experience someone who lives in a country which is mostly warmer than the UK will feel the cold more. Brits in Spain or Italy in the autumn / early spring in their shorts whilst the locals are all in jeans and coats is definitely a thing!

Ever heard of sockettes or no show socks?

Yes, I've tried several but the all slip under the heel and are terribly uncomfortable

RosesAndHellebores · 27/04/2024 09:36

@Phoebefail "brown haze" springs to mind. In the early 80s we wore very pale or navy tights mostly. I have bought some in Opaline (pale) and rose quartz (less pale) from M&S recently. I will wear them in May - too warm for opaques; too cold for bare legs.

I quite agree with a pp, never have I found a sockette that doesn't turn into an "offette", half way down my shoes. They may have been invented in Hades.

Phoebefail · 27/04/2024 10:09

Those sockettes, they look good, but I do so detest logos and clever remarks on clothing.

suburburban · 27/04/2024 10:16

@EvaLution

Thanks

suburburban · 27/04/2024 10:17

I will stick with sheer tights when needed

At least they look better than my pasty legs and they offer warmth

I'm not as slim as I was so no pencil skirts

Whycantiwinmillionsandsquillions · 27/04/2024 10:23

Anyone remember ecru coloured tights?
They came out when I was at school.
Madd you look like an extra in a zombie film 🤣🤣🤣

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 27/04/2024 10:39

I was in my local clothes shop (boutique?) yesterday and all the skirts they had were as follows in the links:

I've tried on the first skirt but as I need to lose weight it didn't look good.

and a beige A line knee/midi button skirt

They probably had others too. So probably pencil skirts are just 'out' at the moment.

I'd say sheer tights in an office are dated nowadays too.
