I assumed you were one of the "chief mourners". As someone who has been part of the direct family in the last few weeks, a) I dislike that term "chief mourner" and b) it sounds like you're making it about you. I realise perhaps that isn't your intention but it is sounding very like it. Why does it matter what you wear if you aren't in the direct family sitting up front? That just seems in poor taste and like you want to be noticed for some reason. Not saying you need to dress in a sack but have some time respect.

Uricon2 · 25/03/2024 19:52

"Dress to the nines" has a particular meaning in British culture OP and it doesn't at all imply a wish not to draw attention to yourself. Quite the opposite, actually.

jonnyjanetkeogh · 25/03/2024 19:52

*some respect.
Can't edit on the app.

canyouletthedogoutplease · 25/03/2024 19:55

Wanting to stand out in a crowd, and simultaneously not drawing attention to yourself is going to be difficult.

brainsbrains · 25/03/2024 19:59

@jonnyjanetkeogh well, I will be sitting in front
I don't think i gave any info as to my relationship with the person who passed etc

@Uricon2 🤔 it's got to be cultural differences coursing the misunderstanding etc
Like I said before, in our culture, when an elderly very old person passes, we celebrate their lives not a funeral to weep, cry and mourn, normally, we would wear white or are instructed to wear a particular colour.

Dress to nines to me is to dress very well and good.

When I die, I want everyone to come dressed to the nines.
The last funeral I went to, half the people looked like they'd popped in on their way home from the shops.

I agree with this…whilst dress codes have got a bit more casual in recent years, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, some occasions are still worthy of making an effort for, funerals being one of them.

Binglebong · 25/03/2024 21:16

I wore this recently - very forgiving on my tummy! I panicked a bit about what to wear as I wouldn't know many people there but wanted to be respectful, this did the trick. I understand wanting to have something (your outfit) in control.

Should we not be looking for black if people normally wear white in your culture?

A funeral isn't something you're supposed to be excitedly preparing for and it isn't somewhere to want to stand out.

Agree & with respect what a strange way of talking about a funeral. It's disrespectful to say the least saying you want to stand out. Surely making an effort to look very smart is enough. I'm sure the mourners in grief will not give a hoot as to what people are wearing or who is trying to stand out from the crowd. Perhaps you need to think again OP.

DANIAA - Graduated Midi Dress with Ruched Puff Sleeve – Ted Baker, Canada
yes i'm in canada sorry, it's available in the uk.
the quality of the fabric and stitching really does bring this up a level.
the run small.

Bloody hell!
How much are inheriting. I hope it's lots and lots👺

I wore a dress that looked like this to a funeral in January. It was by Calvin Klein and I added a short, fitted, double breasted jacket, knee length heeled boots, small YSL chain black bag and white gold, wedding band, hoop earrings. I'm a size 12 and thought it looked simple and elegant. I had previously worn the dress, without the jacket, to work.

I'm guessing that the OP is Chinese/Japanese etc as they wear white to funerals, so it's cultural differences re appropriate funeral garb.

Pair with a jacket, court shoes and amazon has those hats. All that said, it's very over the top now, most people are a bit less all black these days

Ilikeadrink14 · 25/03/2024 22:33

Sorry but if people are that worried about how they look, I feel they really care about themselves more than their loss. When my husband died, my daughters had to get me into some clothes that were suitable as I was too distraught. I couldn’t begin to think about what to wear, yet alone how I would look!
Each to her own, I suppose, but this post did shock me!
