If you're 5'7 with a 26" waist...

Would you mind telling me how much you weigh, please? My waist is 27" but I'm thinking of trying to get it down to 26" because it opens up more possibilities with vintage clothes: 26" seems vastly more common than 27" when it comes to vintage, for some reason.

I'm just wondering how much I might have to lose to get down to 26". If it's too much I might not bother 😅😬

( I was going to post this on Weight Loss chat but then I realised there's probably more people who can answer the question on here).

I can’t answer your question I’m afraid, but it was usual pre the 1960s to wear a girdle which would have made the waist smaller anyway. Ie the small waist measurement isn’t entirely ‘natural’. Would wearing the modern equivalent (skims?) be the way to go?

ooooohnoooooo · 17/03/2024 10:07

My vintage wedding dress was a 26 in waist.

I weighed 57/58 kilos and I'm 5 foot 6

At a squeeze I could fit into it at 59/60.

I'm currently 63 kilos and can't get it on 😂

waistchallenge · 17/03/2024 10:10

Hmm, so you mean women walked around wearing girdles in their day-to-day lives? That sounds a bit uncomfortable. What about in summer? Does anyone here actually remember this?

Did the girdle function like a corset? I'm not sure a similar thing is still on sale?

SilverBranchGoldenPears · 17/03/2024 10:11

They did! Girdles all the way. Uncomfortable for sure.

That said, I used to be 26 inch waist but was smaller than you and was 50kg. Sometimes 49. I would expect not more than 52 for your height for that

FlutteryButterfly · 17/03/2024 10:17

I'm 5ft 9 and at 9st 2lb I have a 26" waist. So at 5ft 7 I'd say 8st 13 ish.

Obviously only lose weight if iys realistic and you stay within healthy boundaries.

waistchallenge · 17/03/2024 10:18

It is absolutely fascinating how fashion norms change! My friend who is older than me told me that everyone used to wear an underskirt/slip (not sure what is the right name here) when they wore a skirt. Wonder what happened to that and why?

Yuja · 17/03/2024 10:30

Mines 25 I'm 5,6 and 50kg

waistchallenge · 17/03/2024 10:35

I'm especially interested in hearing from people who are 5'7" like me as there's already a lot of info for 5'6" because it's a much more common height

OP posts:
alwaysonadiet1 · 17/03/2024 10:36

9 stone 2lb

waistchallenge · 17/03/2024 10:37

Are you 5'7", @alwaysonadiet1 ?

My grandma up to nearly her dying day always wore a girdle and a slip if wearing a skirt. And a girdle if leaving the leaving the house whatever she was wearing. She insisted that they "smoothed" the lines and made clothes hang properly. She was born in 1930 and I believe she was a bit of a fashionista of her time.

And petticoats were a must to accentuate the waist and make your calves look smaller. She also had a rule about florals and polka dots, they needed to be spaced and sized in a certain way otherwise it would unbalance you. Wish I could remember the saying!

Slips, girdles, corsets and the like fell out of fashion I'm guessing due to a couple of reasons. The invention of rayon, nylon amd polyester for one. Made things like tights more accessible, cheaper, thinner and sturdier. The sexual revolution and the rise of femininism.

5’7”, waist 25 inches, weigh 59kg. I’m an hourglass so have a lot on top that probably contributes to the weight though

alwaysonadiet1 · 17/03/2024 10:38

Yes. Not 9st 2 anymore but working on it. My waist was 25/26 when I was.

Kitkat1523 · 17/03/2024 10:43

You realise even if you lose weight , your actual waist measurement may remain the same

I do that, and I'm in my 20s. So I'm 5'7" and my waist is 25/26". I weigh about 52kg

Really? 😯 I just assumed it would change.

Oh dear! I don't think close to 8 stone/52 kilos is happening for me for various reasons. I'm in my forties and I think at this age I might look too thin facially at that weight. I don't know what I weigh now but I'm sure it's more than even 9 stone, let alone 8.

@IntoTheMild I'm sure most people would be so happy with your current stats, I know it's personal preference though.

OP posts:
alwaysonadiet1 · 17/03/2024 10:51

Seems like I was heavier than most with that size waist. I'm an hourglass.

waistchallenge · 17/03/2024 10:54

I did think that, @alwaysonadiet1 . I'm sure in the past I've weighed less than you and had a larger waist. It sounds like you are lucky with your shape.

Why do you want a BMI << 18 ?

merlotmerlin · 17/03/2024 10:57

I have recently started wearing foundation garments. (Mother is now sure I am mad.) I now style some 1940s outfits and hair.
It started with bedroom gear. Then I wore it for real and have now bought some of good quality for every day. Try Burlesque dance suppliers.
My waist has reduced by an inch. Spanx work well.

Illpickthatup · 17/03/2024 10:58

I'm 5'6. 8 stone 10lbs with a 26 inch waist. It all depends on your body composition though. I carry all my weight on my legs and bum. Very lean on top.
