If you're 5'7 with a 26" waist...

waistchallenge · 17/03/2024 10:01

Would you mind telling me how much you weigh, please? My waist is 27" but I'm thinking of trying to get it down to 26" because it opens up more possibilities with vintage clothes: 26" seems vastly more common than 27" when it comes to vintage, for some reason.

I'm just wondering how much I might have to lose to get down to 26". If it's too much I might not bother 😅😬

( I was going to post this on Weight Loss chat but then I realised there's probably more people who can answer the question on here).

You put in your weight and height and measurements and see what other women look like with the same or similar to you.

Oldraver · 17/03/2024 14:32

I do wear one of the M&S slips with a few nice dresses though and a cotton tiered underskirt under my flared skirts, brilliant for extra warmth in winter

DinosaurOfFire · 17/03/2024 14:35

I was 8st 1lb/ 8st 2lb, very active, and I have a straight up straight down figure. I was also around 21 years old! And that only lasted about 6 months.

At 5'7 and 8st2 you're clinically underweight.

I'm also 5' 7" and 52kg (have gone down to 50kg sometimes without realising - I only ever get weighed at the hospital or GP, never had scales at my flat or in my parents house) That's my natural weight, I've never been on a diet of any kind and I eat what I like. My whole family is the same, naturally slim.
No doctor has ever said anything to me about this, so it can't be unusual.

waistchallenge · 17/03/2024 14:39

It's definitely looking like the 8-and-a-bit stone/52 kilo ballpark is the answer here but I don't think I have the appetite [!] for it. Perhaps I'll try going for 8 and a half stone and see where that leaves me.

BTW, to all those wearing petticoats/underskirts, where are your buying those? Do you get natural fibre ones?

When I got married, I was 5'7 and had a 24" waist. I weighed about 7st from memory. Was a long time ago!

TarantinoIsAMisogynist · 17/03/2024 14:55

waistchallenge · 17/03/2024 10:51

Oh dear! I don't think close to 8 stone/52 kilos is happening for me for various reasons. I'm in my forties and I think at this age I might look too thin facially at that weight. I don't know what I weigh now but I'm sure it's more than even 9 stone, let alone 8.

@IntoTheMild I'm sure most people would be so happy with your current stats, I know it's personal preference though.

Edited

Actually, most people wouldn't be "so happy" to be clinically underweight.

There are posts on this thread with a seriously worrying pro-ana vibe to them.

Being underweight is not aspirational, and should not be presented as such.

Not unusual isn't the same as being healthy/aspirational. Very low weight is correlated with some poor health outcomes in women, especially in later life.

If that's your natural weight, fine, but anyone dieting with the aim of becoming clinically underweight (or even more underweight than they already are) has a serious problem. And there are posts on this thread where people are describing exactly that

I've no idea about dieting, I was pointing out that I'm the same height and weight as the other poster that you were accusing of being underweight and no doctor has ever mentioned anything about my weight one way or the other. I just look normally slim. When I was in my teens I was much thinner (again, in spite of eating like a horse) and started to be a size 8 rather than 6 when I got to about 20. Perfectly normal.

TarantinoIsAMisogynist · 17/03/2024 15:38

I didn't "accuse that poster of being underweight". That was another poster, who noted (entirely factually) that IntoTheMild is clinically underweight.

The original post by IntoTheMild has actually been deleted now because they were saying that despite already being clinically underweight, they felt they had excess fat and wanted to lose more weight. Blatant pro-ana content - is that really something you want to defend?

If you want proof that being underweight is being presented as aspirational on this thread, just look 2 posts up from your most recent post. It's not even subtle.

lol it was sarcasm! I wouldn’t digitally shout at someone you are clinically obese! It’s rude!

TarantinoIsAMisogynist · 17/03/2024 15:55

If someone posted to say that they were overweight, but felt they needed more fat and were aiming to gain more, people would certainly point out to them that they were already overweight.

Personally, I think pro-ana posts like your first one should have no place on this forum. It's worse than rude - it's dangerous.

ArsMamatoria · 17/03/2024 15:58

5'7" - 26" waist at 60kg. Each 2kg seems to add/subtract about half an inch from my waist.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 17/03/2024 16:01

Adding to the discussion around sizing with vintage clothing - it will also depend on how vintage you are going . In the 1980s in my early 20s, I had a 22" waist (lost many years ago) and wore clothing that was a size 10 which fitted my slightly pear shape perfectly. However my mum passed down to me some clothing she had worn in the 1950s/early 60s which was supposedly a size 12 and whilst it was OK around my hips, the waist was too tight and the defined bust area was too large . Presumably having being made to go over more shaped undergarments than the skimpy ones I wore .

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 17/03/2024 16:04

I’m a fatty on this thread - 29” waist at 5ft 6 - but I do always wear a slip in the summer! It helps dresses sit better and means no knickers showing if you’re wearing something in light fabric. I have a couple of culotte slips which are great to stop thigh rub too.

Since I didn't mention "Pro ana" why are you asking me if I really want to defend it?? I merely remarked that plenty of people are naturally slim with absolutely no restriction of food involved (unless you count not eating meat, which I don't) and that's normal. I've no idea about the deleted post, I didn't see it.

Randomsabreur · 17/03/2024 16:06

My waist was 26 inches at around 75kg.

I have big boobs, ribcage is 28 inches or less when not massively overweight, I still need a 30 back bra at more like 90kg.

Waist size is more of a function of bone structure and toning than pure fat percentage...

just expand the quote above ^

Crikey my waist was 26" when I was 54kg.

It does now. It didn't when you posted.

Regardless - my issue is with people promoting being underweight as aspirational, and that has been happening on this thread.

Like I said, if that's your natural weight then fine. But for the deleted poster who is still trying to lose at that size, there are obviously some serious issues.

Oh well, I didn't see it. I was just sticking up for the poster who was told she was underweight when I'm the same weight and height. I just assume that slim people are naturally slim, all my family (of all ages) and friends are, and that's what's normal to me.

OctopusLocks · 17/03/2024 16:24

I'm 5ft7" with a 26" waist and I weigh about 8st4.
