If you're 5'7 with a 26" waist...

Would you mind telling me how much you weigh, please? My waist is 27" but I'm thinking of trying to get it down to 26" because it opens up more possibilities with vintage clothes: 26" seems vastly more common than 27" when it comes to vintage, for some reason.

I'm just wondering how much I might have to lose to get down to 26". If it's too much I might not bother 😅😬

( I was going to post this on Weight Loss chat but then I realised there's probably more people who can answer the question on here).

@waistchallenge im 5’7 and when I had a 26 waist was probably around 57kg. When I got married I had a 24in waist and was about 55kg.

im now about 60-61kg with a 28 waist but this is now with 2 babies!

you haven’t said how much you weigh. Just because we are a similar height doesn’t mean we will weigh the same. Everyone is built differently.

TicketyBoo11 · 17/03/2024 11:10

I’m 5’7”, never had a 26” waist so can’t help you there but I love vintage dresses and one thing I’ve found is that the body length is shorter. The vintage dresses I’ve tried are too short in the body so even if the waist size was right the waist would be well above my own. Alterations are common.

My grandma up to nearly her dying day always wore a girdle and a slip if wearing a skirt. And a girdle if leaving the leaving the house whatever she was wearing. She insisted that they "smoothed" the lines and made clothes hang properly. She was born in 1930 and I believe she was a bit of a fashionista of her time.

Yes. My gran was born in the mid to late 1920s.
Always wore foundation garments including a girdle. They were everyday wear. I grew up in the 70s and 80s and she was still wearing the same sort of undergarments she wore in her youth then. This included stockings which attached to the girdle. Never tights.

I'm 5'7" but my waist is far from 26 inches now so can't help you there OP.

backatschool · 17/03/2024 11:17

5'7", 27 inch waist, age 50, weight is 60kg

backatschool · 17/03/2024 11:19

Pressed send too soon. Meant to say I weighed exactly the same when I had a 25-26 inch waist, I was just a bit younger and a slightly different shape.

BaronessBomburst · 17/03/2024 11:28

We won't talk about my waist, but I always wear a slip/ petticoat. They do, as a PP mentioned, make clothes hang better and smooth out lines from tights, underwear etc. The petticoat is next to your skin so you'll often get an extra wear out of your dress before it needs washing, which in turn helps keep clothes in better condition. I often wear a light t-shirt or short-sleeved vest under a knitted dress. It's so much warmer in winter, whilst looking more elegant and slimming as you can add a smart jacket and don't have to hide under a bulky jumper.

Magpiecomplex · 17/03/2024 11:33

5'7" and a bit, at 9 stone I had a 26" waist but I'm an hourglass too. Note "had", I don't any more!

Hmm, so you mean women walked around wearing girdles in their day-to-day lives? That sounds a bit uncomfortable. What about in summer? Does anyone here actually remember this?

Did the girdle function like a corset? I'm not sure a similar thing is still on sale?

It was seen as a bit indecent not to wear one apparently. A bit like not wearing a bra if you’re booby. So you would wear one if you went out of the house.

waistchallenge · 17/03/2024 11:46

Funny how men didn't have to truss up their swinging tackle, isn't it? And that often is a bit indecent.

Why do you want a BMI << 18 ?

Weight looks different on everyone! I’ve always felt I weigh a lot less than others the same size and I’m always shocked to learn how much people weigh. I actually just measured my waist and it is 26.5. I want to feel comfortable in size 8 clothes not like they are tight.

Happydays321 · 17/03/2024 11:48

I'm 5'8" with a 30" waist and weight 58kgs.

steelseries · 17/03/2024 11:49

That's me - I'm 55kg.

Chickydoo · 17/03/2024 11:50

5ft 7' I weigh 8 stone 9. Have a 26-27 inch waist. I am in my mid fifties.

It is absolutely fascinating how fashion norms change! My friend who is older than me told me that everyone used to wear an underskirt/slip (not sure what is the right name here) when they wore a skirt. Wonder what happened to that and why?

Slips were common when I was a child - i remember wearing them for special occasions where we were dressed up. But I haven't heard of people wearing them since the 90s/00s

Chickydoo · 17/03/2024 11:51

Think that's 55 kilos

Dachshund40 · 17/03/2024 11:56

5”7 (and a half) weight varies between 59 and 61 kilos depending on time of month and I have a 25 inch waist

Venus14 · 17/03/2024 12:00

I wore slips under school skirts/dresses at primary school in the seventies. I had an older mum who still wore girdles though, born in 1929.

Rosiiee · 17/03/2024 12:01

I’m 5’7 and 52kg and wear waist 25 jeans 😊

Yes. I was born in 1956 and I remember my mum wore one all the time and being jealous when my older sister first got one because it seemed so grown up. By the time I reached my teens they were disappearing but my mum's generation carried on wearing them.

And while it's easy for us to wonder why they ever put up with them, I know from my own experience that Spanx can be pretty uncomfortable today.

HangingOver · 17/03/2024 12:02

My waist is 24 I’m 5’10 and 60kg

Snap! Lanky hi five

ChaoticBag · 17/03/2024 12:08

Seconding the Spanx suggestion - much easier than punishing your body to fit into a smaller size!

I remember wearing a slip under my skirts as a child (in my 50s now). I sometimes think about that when I'm wearing a dress or skirt that starts climbing up my legs when I'm wearing a long coat 😂 They were actually useful.

waistchallenge · 17/03/2024 12:10

Do Spanx actually work for the waist, though? I've got some slimming underwear but it seems to more hold the tummy in than anything else.

I bought a Skims bodysuit - I laughed out loud when I first saw it out of the packaging, it genuinely looks like a baby grow. You think theres no way it will fit but somehow it does (and you probably sweat off 5 pounds trying to get it on!)

Wiwt234 · 17/03/2024 12:21

5ft7 25.5 inch waist. I weight 58kg.

I agree that 26" opens up many more midcentury vintage opportunities!
