What does your teenager consider stylish?

DS is nearly 14 and hankering after a pair of black and white Adidas sliders. He generally seems to favour an "off to rob the corner shop on my e-scooter" style, while I desperately try to steer him towards surfer chic.

DD is 11 and has a very strange idea of what American teenage girls wear.

DS16 likes Shorts, Nikes and football tops. If he wears trousers it's cargo pants with T-shirt/hoodie. He also love a fleece at the moment.

Brands he loves to wear are Columbia, Parlez or ASOS.

PieAndLattes · 07/01/2024 17:35

My 15yo was walking round town in bright blue crocs the other day. Apart from them it’s mainly North Face, Adidas and Nike - mostly in grey and black.

Weepingskies · 07/01/2024 17:37

My 16 y/o DD dresses mostly from Hollister with the occasional primark / even M and S bits thrown in. If I want to buy her clothes as a present though hollister is definitely the safe option!

IncognitoUsername · 07/01/2024 17:37

DS (15) likes all shades of black. He’s mad at me for not keeping all my goth band t shirts from when I was at Uni.

Howmanysleepsnow · 07/01/2024 17:43

DS18 wears black and grey, because “all black is boring and I want to mix it up.” Generally tracksuit bottoms or cargo pants with hoodies. Underarmour and gymshark mainly.
DD16 wears one of 7 pairs of Jordan ones (retro, mid height), cargo pants or short skirts, occasionally wide legged jeans, cropped t-shirts or hoodies, cropped Nike puffer jacket. Over the head headphones as an accessory to hold her hair back!

ShowOfHands · 07/01/2024 17:44

16yr old DD makes her own clothes mostly. She likes quirky fabric and vintage styles. She also shops in charity shops and only buys new in places like Lucy&Yak or Run&Fly for bonkers dungarees. She is rarely seen without a hat. Sometimes she looks like a librarian, sometimes like my Grandma. Hair is currently blue and she's wearing a knitted tank top and a floor length patchwork skirt. Tomorrow, for sixth form, she's wearing a lurid green suit with waistcoat and boutonniere and Doc Martens.

12yr old DS dresses like a Victorian fop. He likes ruffles, frock coats, a cane and a top hat. Sometimes he wears a Percy Pig onesie to change it up a bit.

vidflex · 07/01/2024 17:46

My dd is 14 and loves vintage clothes. Just got herself a vintage afghan coat and some low slung flares last month. A sucker for platform shoes and loves chunky jewellery. She gets a lot of compliments on her style. All her friends dress in tracksuits etc and she bought a velvet tracksuit but teams it with very high platform boots and a corset type belt. I think she was born in the wrong decade lol

LyricalGangsta · 07/01/2024 17:48

DS18 wears cargos, hoodies and crocs constantly
DS17 wears grey Nike sweats, white tees, AF1s/white socks adidas sliders
DS15 wears black or dark grey Nike tracksuits and Nike Dunks
DD13 wears pastel coloured Nike sweats, vest/crop tops, oversized cardigans (mine!) and Ugg Tasman slipper shoe things

These sounds brilliant!

My dd is 13 and wears an odd mix of massive hoodies, preppy stuff and colourful jumpers. She is very slim but so tall now so quite hard to get things that fit in waist and height. She likes crazy jewelery too.

whatthehellnow23 · 07/01/2024 17:50

My 16DSS is very stylish I think, all neutral muted colours some cost heavy brands unfortunately but will mix it up with primark / H&M slim fit T-shirts

17DSS however has zero clue... baggier the better, mis matched colours and her dads hoodies 😂

hellsBells246 · 07/01/2024 17:50

Did 17 - fan of Ralph Lauren, Zara and H&M. Likes cargos, chinos and smart jeans. Used to live in Nike/Champion hoodies and joggers, though.

DD 18 - loves joggers and oversized White Fox hoodies. Going out? Tiny skirts and tiny tops. Likes ASOS, Monki, Goose & Gander. Pull & Bear.

Loopytiles · 07/01/2024 17:53

Don’t think they think about what’s ‘stylish’, they just try to dress similar to others at school / where we live.

Sk8erboi · 07/01/2024 17:55

The bit about robbing on an e-scooter made me laugh as my 13 year old is the same.
I too try and steer him away as I think the look is ridiculous, especially as we live in a rural village, it is the fashion though.

He wears tracksuits and trainers, the usual nike and North face but he has recently got some bits from Mercier and also Montirex (I think its called) which are new brands to our house.
I have to compromise as I won't have him wearing Hoodrich or Trapstar etc which he would love so we try and find a middle ground.

Namechange1990 · 07/01/2024 17:56

DD (18) has changed in last 6 months from leggings and hoodies, always nike, to super smart... shes currently on a fairfax and favor love with jeans and shirts. i miss the nike fase was far cheaper and easier

DD(16) is now very much leggings and hoodies again mainly nike but will wear gym king, pink soda and trainers.

DS(14) no words really sometimes super smart sometimes looks like he may have been dragged out a bin.

GellerYeller · 07/01/2024 18:00

Band t shirts/hoodies, bought at gigs, if vintage, then it has to be a band they actually like. Apparently this is ‘a thing’.

With low slung flared jeans,Vans, Converse, maybe the occasional fairisle type jumper or a checked shirt.
For dressy occasions: Floaty or bias cut dresses from Urban Outfitters with lace tights, any item of jewellery Madonna would have worn in the 80s and clumpy boots.
Day to day If they look like a dad at a Weezer concert then they’ve nailed it basically.

Northsideoftheriver · 07/01/2024 18:02

My DD13 dresses in a manner similar to East 17 back in the day. There is also a lot of gym wear but no evidence of having done any form of exercise other than her mouth.

Teenagersscarethelivinshitoutofme · 07/01/2024 18:06

Band t-shirts, converse, shaved head and piercings.

Therealjudgejudy · 07/01/2024 18:09

@Northsideoftheriver 😂

troppibambini6 · 07/01/2024 18:12

Dd(13) likes brands like des vu, north face, Uggs, Jordan 4's, Nike pro Hollister, Victoria secret, white fox, urban outfitters and a new one she likes sisters and something or other.

Mainly cargos, crop tops, hoodies sometimes skorts too...

One thing she does which I'm not a fan off is this scraped back ponytail thing. So basically a middle parting low down pony and gel so it looks plastered to her head.

Zebracat · 07/01/2024 18:13

My student Dd, 20, says she likes 60s stuff, but what she actually wears are skinnies with my old cardigans. She always somehow looks neat and coordinated, even when i know she’s got nothing clean to wear.

HippyChickMama · 07/01/2024 18:14

Ds 16 wears a uniform of the skinniest of skinny jeans, band/film t shirts and hoodies and either Converse or Adidas Campus. If he has to go formal he has a penchant for slim fitting suits, waistcoats, dress shirts and a pocket watch. He's tall and thin and both styles suit him. He has never worn tracksuits or joggers apart from for PE at school.

BlowDryRat · 07/01/2024 18:36

Loving the arty kids.

I've coaxed DS into jeans and trainers at least. DD is more stubborn.

LaChienneDesFromages · 07/01/2024 20:36

These descriptions are great! I can just picture your very varied teens.

Here, DD15 is an unapologetic preppie. It’s all chinos, Ralph Lauren cable knits and penny loafers. She looks like an extra in The Secret History. I’m assured it’s not ironic.

DD14 favours quirkier styles. She’s currently wearing a floor length purple cord skirt, flouncy blouse and crown braids (her Ukrainian friend did them for her yesterday.)

DS12 has one style. Shorts, bright t-shirt and shacket. Sketchers trainers as he still can’t tie his laces. His sisters call it ‘postman chic.’ In summer, he loses the shacket,

Goneback2school · 07/01/2024 20:47

Ds18 has had minimal interest in fashion. He lived in mostly blackjoggers and hoodie for moat of his teen years. When shopping for himself he likes primark with some nicer bits from Jack and Jones. He was shopping today and came back with a white hoody with Van Gogh Sunflowers printed on it from Primark and some J and J tshirts. He goes for blue jeans, crew neck sweatshirt and bomber jacket when wanting to look presentable.

DoYouAgree · 07/01/2024 20:49

Ds here also likes the erm more sporty look so Nike, North Face, Technical - basically just a trip to JD buys 90% of his wardrobe.

He's also happy with plain joggers and hoodies from primark bizarrely but happy with that.
