What woman and man would you describe as truly beautiful?

And who would you describe as pretty? We were chatting about this at work today and I'm interested to see what everyone else thinks. My nominations are Brad Pitt and Cheryl Cole for 'pretty' and Jonny Depp and Penelope Cruz for beautiful. We also got onto the subject of supposedly pretty people who we think aren't - I'd put Victoria beckham in this category - she's vile!!

Disgaree about Kate. I think she photographs very well and is has the bone structure which means she looks stunning when made up, but I met her at a party once when she was make-up-less, and she was plain and a bit skanky looking, to be honest. Very bad teeth. Bad skin. Skeletal and had corn beef legs. Sorry, just being honest!

milge · 14/03/2008 23:45

David Beckham and Rob Loew are pretty.

Brangelina are beautiful.

Agree re Denzel Washington
George Clooney, (in their younger days) Sean Connery and Jack Nicholson are/were ruggedly handsome in a macho, not metrosexual way.

harpsichordcarrier · 14/03/2008 23:47

Gael Garcia Bernal is ravishing.

ditto Luis Garrel

Eva Green beautiful

Kate rusby very pretty

Sarah Silverman pretty too

sophiebbb · 14/03/2008 23:50

well at least there is a god! i always wondered how kate moss could party so hard and still be paid millions for photoshoots. glad she looks less well in real life

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 14/03/2008 23:50

As for supposedly pretty - I don't think Gwynneth Paltrow or Jennifer Anniston are.

And I really don't get the John Barrowman thing, not because he's gay, but because he looks like Tom Cruise & Christopher Biggins love child.

MrsJohnCusack · 14/03/2008 23:52

the young Marlon Brando was soooooooooo beautiful

women - wahsserface from Manon des Source - Emmanuelle Beart. and EVa van Saint and Audrey Hepburn obv. all beautiful. and Cate Blanchett

MrsMattie · 14/03/2008 23:53

LMAOOOOOoooooo @Duchess - so true about John Barrowman. Gwynnie Paltrow is a drip, isn't she? She's pretty, but deeply unattractive to me. I love Eva Mendes. And Scarlett Johnasonn. I like women with tits and lips and big eyes (God, am I a lezzer?...)

MrsJohnCusack · 14/03/2008 23:53

pretty - KAtie Holmes (although is starting to look a biut weird and Stepfordy - dressing too old mainly)

pretty men - james macavoy

harpsichordcarrier · 14/03/2008 23:54

I really struggled to think of any women but could think of loads of men
I think I am definitely hetero

alfiesbabe · 14/03/2008 23:54

I agree that Kate Moss is skanky looking. You dont need to meet her in real life to tell that - there's some godawful photos of her around. She does have great bone structure, and I think because of that will age well, but she's just too hammered atm to be beautiful!! Vanessa Paradis is just a better scrubbed version of Kate. Look at the pics - she has the same facial structure. I'm the OP and I mentioned Cheryl Cole, so apologies for offending!! But I do think she's 'pretty' ie the overall package of body, hair, eyes etc, but in a very bland way. IMO, 'pretty' is a bland thing. More a case of conventional features, and everything being in the right place IYSWIM. Whereas true beauty often has an element of imperfection or quirkiness to it.

Javier Bardem just reeks man though

That is very true about John Barrowmna, just too squeaky clean as well which = unsexy.

MrsJohnCusack · 14/03/2008 23:55

i think liv tyler is beautiful too

MrsMattie · 14/03/2008 23:55

I didn't really 'meet' Kate Moss, that was a slioght exageration (after nearly a whole bottle of vino!). We were both at the same party. And I stood right next to her.

She was skanky though.

harpsichordcarrier · 14/03/2008 23:55

oh is James Mcavoy pretty?
oh I am not sure
I think I will googleimage him for about half an hour just to be sure

Tinker · 14/03/2008 23:57

I know what you meann about Chery Cole alfiesbabe, but it is all veneer. Sophia Loren fits the imperfect and beautiful criteria, I think.

harpsichordcarrier · 14/03/2008 23:57

urgh! at that Javier hairy faced one!
I think Tinker and I will not be fighting over the same bloke in a night club any time soon

MrsJohnCusack · 14/03/2008 23:58

yes
lots ofbeautiful men
harpsi's ones
and Cary Grant, rupert everett

harpsichordcarrier · 14/03/2008 23:59

right I have just googled Cheryl Cole because I didn't know who she was and you are all mad or under a spell or something
she is minging
she looks like someone sprayed her with reflective orange paint for a start
also she seems to wear a lot of over-sized cowboy hats

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 15/03/2008 00:00

beautiful folks is the adjective here...

james mcevoy -good looking but not the b word -no

sophiebbb · 15/03/2008 00:00

Oh lucky you MrsM - a whole bottle of wine. I have 6 weeks to go before number 2 pops onto the scene and cannot wait to get going with the wine again!

PS agree with alfies defn of pretty v beautiful

Tinker · 15/03/2008 00:00

Desperately searches for an unhirsute image - tough, unpleasant job

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 15/03/2008 00:00

marlon when young YES

and elvis

harpsichordcarrier · 15/03/2008 00:01

look at those eyebrows! nonono! you may keep him

MrsMattie · 15/03/2008 00:02

Cheryl Cole is very pretty, but I agree that beauty has something quirky and imperfect about it, it is natural and isn't a 'try hard' thing. Fake tan and cosmetci dentistry don't = beauty, imo.

MrsJohnCusack · 15/03/2008 00:02

i agree with you on CC harpsi
