Should I cut my hair? Short hair - over 50?

I’ve always preferred my hair short, it’s fine with a wave and is easy to quickly blow dry - I especially suit the slightly flicked out style like Kate Silverton used to have .

The past two years has seen me (very slowly) grow out to shoulder length. It’s so fine and quite ratty now on the ends so needs a really good cut. I’m quite grey but have a combination of highlights and a darker blond. I’m finding myself hankering after my old style but I’m 50, my face is fatter with a double chin coming along and I fear I’ll look older.

It’s wavy yet doesn’t look tidy when I scrunch dry it - it’s just dried and it curls up at the ends. It’s flat and it won’t hold much volume, it’s terrible day two and looks like it needs washing.

I have a hair appointment in the morning - should I be brave and cut it short again? If so what kind of style? I don’t want anything too ‘out there’ and all the pictures I like I suspect they are dated and the ‘id like to see the manager’ (as much as I hate that analogy so apologies). Any inspiration please?

I’m in the same boat, even down to thinking about Kate Silverton! Your colour is gorgeous, btw. I guess the question is are you any good at styling your hair L

Yowlingcat · 08/12/2023 16:28

I’m ok at styling (so old fashioned but I find a hot air styler really good). The good thing is that I have that wave in my hair so when it’s shorter it naturally ‘flicks’.

I can get this amount of curl out of it if I use loads of product but I’d have to do it every day. Not sure what to do as when it’s short it’s easier but I do like the option of curls when I feel like it

It's a shame we can't see your face as that is when you can see if a style is right for you. Your hair is very similar to mine in style although I have just had layers cut in to it plus a fringe which at first I hated! I do have to straighten the ends which does tend to dry it out. I'm 51 and finding it gets dry really easily but is also annoying as it has a very greasy feel to it on top.. I hate hair!!
I love the colour too btw

NotMeNoNo · 08/12/2023 16:33

Just do it. Pixie all the way. Ramp up your earrings and make up a bit and wear it with confidence. Think Carrie Gracie for instance:

You want to ask for it short around the sides/back with some length/texture on top, also note the styling products needed.

I think your hair and colour is fabulous. You say "over 50". I don't think age counts. My oldest DD is 53,has long hair. I'm over 70,it was shoulder length till October, had it cut to a chin length bob..it really doesn't suit me very short.

Yowlingcat · 08/12/2023 16:38

I love this, even a little shorter layers. But it look like you need thick hair

Well done!! Tbh you can get away with it short or long. You have that flick in it that I try endlessly to straighten out. Personally I think you should go for something half way..a slick cut, not too short so you can tuck it behind your ears. You are luckier than me..I have awful jowls!! You have a nice face!

TheWetBandits · 08/12/2023 16:43

Firstly, you do NOT look 50! And I see no hint of a double chin!

I have similar hair to you and the revlon big hair stick does wonders for it

The previous hairstyle you posted defo needs thick hair

I agree with PP maybe a halfway between a short cut and keeping it the same length?

BonjourCrisette · 08/12/2023 16:43

I have very short hair and am over fifty. It's always suited me like this and still does. Mine is very short, a bit shorter at sides and back than this pic and choppy on top. I say go for it, it's only hair and it will grow if you don't like it!

I love this hairstyle

Looks like thinner hair but well styled and volumised

I went for a short wedged bob and fuck me, it was a nightmare as my hair naturally kinks out. Anything really short will be far more work than the hair you have now - mine is remarkably similar to yours. Go for a style where you don't need straight!

Houseplanter · 08/12/2023 16:47

OP I had hair v similar to yours until yesterday! It's now a v short curly pixi and I love it.

I've been told I look younger, funky and cool today..(none true but I'll take it)

Do it.

Good shout on the face pic. Couldn’t tell at all otherwise. Honestly I’m really struggling to decide what hairstyle I think would suit you best. You don’t look 50 and your face is definitely still slim. Given that it’s not like your hairs down to your bum anyway, and it’s not like you’re going for a skinhead, I’d say be brave and go in and just ask for exactly what you’ve got pictured in your mind. I can’t see anything looking awful on you, and you can change it soon enough if you don’t like it

Lentilweaver · 08/12/2023 16:50

Eh, you don't look 50 and you don't have a fat face. I think short wavy hair looks good on you. You have nice skin which always helps.

TreesWelliesKnees · 08/12/2023 17:00

You look lovely. I'm with pps who said something in between your current length and the one you have in mind would suit you. I wouldn't go for a pixie though - I think it suits only a small number of people, generally ones with smallish heads/faces and chiselled cheekbones. Not that I'm saying you don't have those! When I had a pixie I morphed into my older brother!

NancyJoan · 08/12/2023 17:11

Go shorter and blonder. Go on.

AuntyMabelandPippin · 08/12/2023 18:55

I like mine to look like Lesley Ash's hair in Men Behaving Badly. It's long enough on the front, but short at the back and looks fabulous. I think yours would look good like that.

It's a lot longer at the moment, but I will go back to it after the winter.

Thisisthedawningoftheageofaquarius · 08/12/2023 19:14

You look amazing for 50! I don’t think many people can pull off Jamie lee Curtis cut so I would def go longer than that.

if your trust your hairdresser would you ask what they think would suit? I’d say you could pull off most looks tbh. Pls report back with a pic tomo!!!!!!

Iamacatslave · 08/12/2023 19:18

Go for it.

teenysaladandsniffofarose · 08/12/2023 19:25

Op you look SO much younger than 50!

I'd get a couple inches off and maybe a full fringe?

Yowlingcat · 09/12/2023 15:29

Was talked into a ‘safe’ option by the hairdresser. Can’t say I love it. Even more mumsy than before 😒

Hairdresser knows my hair is wavy and will want to kick out but she reckons this will be easier with a swipe of a hot brush in the morning to pull the ends in. I look like a shroom

Am confused is that an old photo you hair is short, I would definitely grow it.

Yowlingcat · 09/12/2023 15:47

I’ve just had I cut today
