Should I cut my hair? Short hair - over 50?

I’ve always preferred my hair short, it’s fine with a wave and is easy to quickly blow dry - I especially suit the slightly flicked out style like Kate Silverton used to have .

The past two years has seen me (very slowly) grow out to shoulder length. It’s so fine and quite ratty now on the ends so needs a really good cut. I’m quite grey but have a combination of highlights and a darker blond. I’m finding myself hankering after my old style but I’m 50, my face is fatter with a double chin coming along and I fear I’ll look older.

It’s wavy yet doesn’t look tidy when I scrunch dry it - it’s just dried and it curls up at the ends. It’s flat and it won’t hold much volume, it’s terrible day two and looks like it needs washing.

I have a hair appointment in the morning - should I be brave and cut it short again? If so what kind of style? I don’t want anything too ‘out there’ and all the pictures I like I suspect they are dated and the ‘id like to see the manager’ (as much as I hate that analogy so apologies). Any inspiration please?

I think it's elegant - but, if you don't like it, it's not for you. I think you need the fringe cutting back more into the sides and some choppy layers. I have really thick hair but bobs make me look like a mushroom too.

DragonFly98 · 09/12/2023 15:49

Oh just seen the update it's even shorter, sorry op but it was nice before, and would look lovely long. It's not mumsy it's pensioner but hair grows and in your face you look 40. Just grow it for a few years.

I’ve just had I cut today

No I meant the first picture is short ie above your shoulders. Don't listen to hairdressers you are really pretty with great skin and look ten years younger. The hair cut is a mid to late 60's cut.

BonjourCrisette · 09/12/2023 16:27

I'd go somewhere else with a hairdresser who isn't steering you towards safe and get it all cut off. I mean, you look completely fine but I don't think that's what you wanted. And that seems like a very high maintenance style with wavy hair which I personally would not be happy with.

I just wanted to say you look great for 50!

Hairdresser knows my hair is wavy and will want to kick out but she reckons this will be easier with a swipe of a hot brush in the morning to pull the ends in. I look like a shroom

You do not look like a shroom (😁) but it did look nicer longer. It’s nice with some wave, @TheWetBandits suggestion a nice one, and I think there will be a version of the choppy cut that will work. Not the Jamie Lee C chop though, v few can pull that off.

Maybe try a different hairdresser - someone who is more interested in making midlife woman look great

You don’t have a double chin or a fat face to worry about

ScreamingIntoMyPillow · 09/12/2023 22:39

I think the new cut is a bit too short - I quite liked the before and would grow it out a bit. I think a slightly longer, wavy (but not curly) bob would look great on you. The colour is very nice, though, and you have lovely skin!

In the meantime, I think you could really freshen up your look with a new pair of glasses. Not sure if this is an option, but for example Ace & Tate have some nice contemporary styles at very reasonable prices. The current ones are fine but do feel just a little bit dated to me.

Inca22 · 09/12/2023 22:43

I absolutely love your hair wavy. I would have kept with that and just gone a little shorter. Absolutely gorgeous - best style you've posted

I agree, you hair looks much nicer wavy. Have you tried it wavy at the new length?

BooseysMom · 10/12/2023 15:28

I think the new style really suits you op. It really shows your colours too.

AzureBlue99 · 10/12/2023 15:47

Hairdressers seem to want to give all women of a certain age the same cut, which is the one you have. There is nothing wrong with it but it is safe and pedestrian although the colour is good. I liked your wavy style- could you get this to wave - it would be a totally different vibe. Some dramatic earrings- not Pat Butcher's but some stylish statement ones?

AzureBlue99 · 10/12/2023 15:49

The Wet Bandits put a picture of what yours might look like now if you could get a wave in it.

Iverymuchdoubtitdarling · 10/12/2023 16:00

I think your glasses are too heavy for your delicate features. I’d go for something lighter/ warmer, maybe pink frames? I wear contacts most days bc glasses overwhelm my face.

Sanguinello · 10/12/2023 16:08

My favourite is the first one you posted.

RestingCatsArseFace · 10/12/2023 16:09

It's been dried too straight, try drying it with some texture. Use mousse and scrunch the waves into it.

Heloo · 10/12/2023 16:10

I think you look lovely. With the new haircut I think I’d keep the fringe off face, and grow it out. Better without the whispy bits? But it’s fine, and it looks polished, and your hair is just one part of your look. And you look miles nicer than silverstone. :)

Heloo · 10/12/2023 16:10

Silverton, sorry typo.

BoilingHotand50something · 10/12/2023 16:18

I quite like the new hair but I sympathise because every hair dresser I ever had wants to make me look ‘naive’ and in my head, I am a bit edgy! I think the fringey bit is probably the bit that makes it look a bit like a mum cut! I think some blonder bold streaks and some different specs would make it look less mumsy. But it’s still nice, not a mushroom and you look way younger than you are.

BoilingHotand50something · 10/12/2023 16:21

Actually just looked again and the colour’s good. I think it’s the wispy fringe that is probably not what you wanted. But definitely try it wavy as I think it would look cool with your colour.

TempleMeads · 10/12/2023 19:04

I don’t think it’s a bad cut but styling it with your natural wave will look more like your aim I think.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 10/12/2023 19:48

Try putting your natural curl/wave into it. I reckon that'll look much, much better than the harshness of the blowdried bob.

Yowlingcat · 10/12/2023 20:21

Thanks guys, you are all so kind. I’ve actually cried a bit earlier as it really wasn’t what I wanted. It makes me feel really frumpy and dowdy.

Need some advice
please. I'm way past menopause but my hair has suddenly become greasy. I have it coloured at the hairdresser (completely grey underneath) and up till last week had thick shiny hair. Now need to wash it everyday. Any suggestions?

Aroundthewaygirl · 10/12/2023 20:55

I think the new cut is cute. I do all kinds of funky things with my hair so with yours I would use a larger hot curler and curl your hair up. But in chunks. Then kind of feather it back. Since it’s thin it will give it some volume. I’m not one for trying to fit into current fads, I do what looks best on me. ☺️
