Does anyone wear stockings and suspenders anymore?

I like to wear dresses for work and I usually wear tights. Recently I have been suffering with thrush and I thought the tights could be aggravating things. Can anyone recommend a good brand of opaque stockings or hold ups. The M&S reviews for their hold ups are mixed and a lot are saying they don't hold up!

I was having the same issues and now wear mock garter tights by Snag. I've never been able to get on with hold ups - they are either too short or they roll down.

If you want proper stockings and suspenders What Katie Did is the best place for a good range of quality suspenders belts

NobodyatHome · 05/12/2023 20:07

Hold ups don’t stay up on my legs.

I've just had a look they look like an excellent solution although I have to say the website looks borderline pornographic or maybe I've just lived a very sheltered life! Grin

I wear stockings & suspenders every day. Sheer stockings I spend more but for everyday opaques I’ve been buying these from Amazon for the last 5 years.

l’m 5’7” size 10 and buy medium.

Boots own brand stay up and wash well

I have never got on with hold-ups, and now that I am middle aged and chubbier of thick they are impossible. I do wear stockings though, get a sturdy suspender belt is my advice. The more delicate ones are really just for flouncing about in your boudoir, they don’t work for everyday wear.

I was coming on to recommend these too, I love them.

Thank you for all your responses I will certainly take a look at the suggestions. I am sure my husband will be thrilled if I start wearing suspenders/mock garter tights as daily wear as well! (Although they won't look great with my gigantic pants) BlushGrin

When I was pregnant I hated tights. As an experiment I just cut the legs off with scissor where the darker thicker portion of the tights is. Then I just folded over and wore as stockings. This worked surprisingly and they didn't ladder.

This is a good cheap alternative. I am pregnant as well (not too much of a bump yet but it will be showing soon)!

I like the Snag mock garters. All the fun of stockings, none of the falling down. I have black and dragon fruit pink.

I'll never forget crossing a busy city centre road with the CEO when one of my holds up hit the deck 😩. Never again.

AgingDisgracefullyHere · 05/12/2023 23:21

Tesco holdups are great for me. I've tried many brands, from Anne Summers to Primark, and I like Tesco best.

Yes! I do. I’m old school, l tend to wear suspenders fairly regularly, more or less day to day basis for work in spring and autumn and then in mid winter the opaque tights come out; bare legs on warm summer days.

I wear them with sheer stockings though (hence avoid mid winter), my experience of opaque stockings is that over time the thickness of the denier tends to damage the clasp.

From my experience fall downs hold ups don’t (hold up). In fact @marmaladeandpeanutbutter l am beginning to wonder if you are me!

Suspenders have an undeserved sleaze reputation, they are practical and comfortable but you need a good quality belt. Look for at least 2 maybe 3 hook fastening minimum at the back, single hooks dig in. Likewise, some belts are designed for the bedroom and are about as useless as a chocolate teapot.

l don’t know how practical it would be with your pending bump though OP. Although l had a friend that managed it.

For comfort and practicality l recommend the Fantasie Bronte.

I hardly wear tights, for similar reasons to OP. Often for winter I cut legs off ribbed or coloured tights as @heyhohello describes. I do hem the tops though. Now wearing some light green ribbed ones with tweed skirt.

For all day wear I prefer a wide/deep belt and 6 clips. Recently bought from Nylon Dreams, they seem OK. Used to buy from an independent shop in Westfield.

JL690 · 06/12/2023 10:56

I only wear stockings when going out, usually buy from M&S but will have a look at the recommendations from previous posters. I never wear tights, never have.

MrsSkylerWhite · 06/12/2023 10:58

God no. Instruments of torture.

MrsRetriever · 06/12/2023 11:00

Another one who enjoys the Snag mock garter tights. I do have some excellent hold ups from Wolford but they cost a lot & I am very protective of them and cautious when I wear them as I would be sad if they got a run.

I always feel very self-conscious in suspenders unless my skirt is full length!

SirVixofVixHall · 06/12/2023 11:00

If you are pregnant then the suspender tights will probably work better with a growing bump than a suspender belt. That or hold ups.

heyhohello · 06/12/2023 21:29

@SirVixofVixHall I found a suspenders belt very comfortable when pregnant. Mine had several hooks and the straps could be lengthened and shortened so I could adjust it as I grew

BlowingAway · 06/12/2023 21:56

M&S used to do these brilliant Autograph opaque hold ups, they had a really wide band at the top, super comfortable and didn't fall down.
Now all hold ups seem to have three thin lines of sticky stuff at the top which is much less secure and uncomfortable.
If anyone knows of some with the wide band do say! You can't really tell from looking online.
