Does anyone wear stockings and suspenders anymore?

I like to wear dresses for work and I usually wear tights. Recently I have been suffering with thrush and I thought the tights could be aggravating things. Can anyone recommend a good brand of opaque stockings or hold ups. The M&S reviews for their hold ups are mixed and a lot are saying they don't hold up!

I've worn them for years, never really got on with tights. Only issue is I think you need to get at least six suspenders on the belt, the belts with only four don't seem to feel right when wearing them.

Tesco holdups are great for me. I've tried many brands, from Anne Summers to Primark, and I like Tesco best.

Hi... Re. The Fantasie "practical" one's... How do you know what size you are? No measurements in the size guide...(or am I being daft?).
I'm guessing that at size 12/14, I'm probably "large"?
Thank you

Hold ups work fine if you have thin muscled rjighs with mo wobbly bits. I used to be able to wear them. Now I can’t because they can’t get a good grip on cellulite etc.

The Fantasie belts are adjustable at the back in a similar way to a bra (avoid any step in/elasticated waist tacky cheapies) for a 12/14 l’d suggest a Medium. You will find the clasps a bit of a faff at first but it becomes second nature. I can even do it in the dark.

2 rules to remember:

  1. Suspenders under knickers; ignore any pictures suggesting otherwise;

  2. Bring the “rear” suspenders to each side. It won’t be comfy if you are sitting on them.

M&S hold ups have been fab through pregnancy especially at an in between stage when maternity tights are too big and normal tights too tight. The sheer ones seemed to stay up no problems at.

Connieston · 07/12/2023 06:28

Suspenders are a pain to get on but once they're on they're on easier to go to the toilet in, easier to sleep in 👀, they're actually very comfy under trousers whereas hold ups always always always unpeel themselves. If I had to wear a hold up I'd size down. I've never spent much on suspenders or stockings and don't wear them very often but I'd never bother with hold ups basically. Cheap suspenders beat expensive hold ups!

Connieston · 07/12/2023 06:31

My tip is I attach the suspenders to the stockings before I put the stockings on. I've never once managed to attach the back ones once the belt is on! You just attach them at the halfway points of the stocking circumference if that makes sense and step into stockings with belt attached but open then fasten.

I’m not sure the positioning would be spot on doing it that way. As l mentioned up thread, the so called back ones should attach to the stocking on the side of the leg.

M&S hold ups are generally good (for me - slim legs and thighs; size small)

I normally wear stockings and suspenders, though that's partly because I can't bear the feel of tights - I have problems with the feel of them. I mostly buy opaques from here: https://www.mayfairstockings.com/collections/opaque

Though I've sometimes also found the same ones more cheaply on Ebay!

Opaque Hosiery

Mayfair Stockings have a lovely collection of higher denier, over 25, stockings, tights and hold ups for cooler days.

You would probably be a medium actually, especially if you have a defined waist.

Vitriolinsanity · 08/12/2023 18:13

I've not worn hold ups since 1994 when they rolled down to my ankles in Victoria Station.

That happened to me too.

Beargrumps22 · 08/12/2023 19:45

last time I wore hold ups one fell down in the library while i was in the queue! gave up after that cant stand tights now so bare legs in summer leggings in winter for me

Bathbabe78 · 08/12/2023 20:02

OMG this. Please tell me if you find anything as good as the old m and a autograph holdups in 80 denier, they’ve reintroduced them but they are nowhere near as good as they used to be and I depend on these! The wide band with lace is so flattering on my fat thighs and they stay up for at least 3 winters. Tights give me tummy ache and so I’m totally screwed without my holdups. I look awful in a trouser too. Considering going back to a suspenders belt - good tips here. Every other brand sucks (boots, the 3 stripe marks ones, polly something, even Wilford aren’t great). I’m a 14ish for reference with large ish thighs and I would normally go XL in the M and S autograph of old.

olease, anyone tell me if you know another hold up brand that have a thick continuous top. :)

BadSkiingMum · 08/12/2023 20:08

I like Pretty Polly or Charnos flesh colour hold ups (fine denier) for spring or autumn when I get too hot in tights.

My pairs have the wide band but they have lasted for ages so don’t know what they are like now.

MinervatheGreat · 08/12/2023 20:13

I get on ok with M&S hold ups but
I have to remember not to use talc or body lotion in the hold-up band area though.

They have been known to slip so I dash to the ladies & use a tiny drop of water on a paper towel to remove talk or lotion residue! Fine after that!

Firstly, Happy New Year! I hope that he replies here were helpful. I'd reiterate much of the above and in response to the heading; that my partner does indeed wear stockings and suspenders through the week. She has tried several types of Hold Ups, but there have been a few memorable Hold Up falling down moments! Not usually what women want!

She gets stockings online from Gio Stockings, What Katie Did, Mayfair Stockings, Nylon Dreamz , Levante, Secrets In Lace, etc, tights from MnS, Snag, Pretty Polly and brands from TK Maxx.

With stockings, my partner likes the security and comfort from a really good deep suspender: modern open bottom or pantie girdle and Corselettes are excellent and aesthetically really lovely. With 4 or 6 metal clips your stockings are never falling down!

Good advice can be had from the What Katie Did website. She has videos on the wearing of different types of suspenders and hosiery covering everything from exquisite Fully Fashioned Stockings to tights.

Positioning depends on how many straps a belt has. I have a couple of traditional belts, very utilitarian in their appearance and meant to look like the real 40s/50s belts that I have worn for D-Day tributes, Glen Miller evenings, Historical Railway events and so on. These have 6 straps, 3 for each leg. One to the front, one to the side and then that ever elusive back strap. Takes some practice to get them straight and I’m not as bendy as I used to be. But worth the effort and the clips have never come undone on their own.

Hold ups start the day fine, then hit the deck when you are crossing a city centre road with your male boss 😬. Avoid at all cost.

Are you me? Finished up taking them off in the middle of a high street 😡. One was almost off anyway.

Best invention since sliced bread; l hate sliced bread 😀.

@StarlightLady Hideous things! Could use as proper stockings, though? The tops are nice.

I think a hold up top would ruin most suspender clasps. Either wear stockings or tights but don’t compromise with something so high risk. Never again!

twoblackdogs · 24/07/2024 11:17

I do. Love them.
A bit of advice: whenever you buy stockings, buy two identical pairs. If a stocking is laddered, you won't need to throw away the other one, just take one from the other package.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 24/07/2024 12:39

Oh my. I wore stockings constantly through the late 70s to the late 90s due to rampant thrush and vanity. I loved them. I'm twice the size I was then and don't think I could wrangle them these days. But a good pair of black stocking and a pair of heeled court shoes. My oh my.
