How many coats do you have?!

Shinyandnew1 · 19/10/2023 15:22

I need a new jacket-mine is falling apart, but it’s got me thinking about what I actually have/want/need.

I already have a

  • navy blue quilted hip length hooded jacket that I wear loads in spring/autumn and warmer winter. It’s got a bit tight now and is battered, so need to replace it-if I could find the same one (Next circa 2013), I’d probably get the same one but can’t find it.

*long padded warm M+S black coat. I like it-very flattering but barely wear it as it’s long and I’m short and it seems to get in the way!

*Wool duffle coat-love it, very warm, wear it when it’s cold but it’s not so great in the wet.

*North Face anorak type coat-bought for rainy days but it’s a bit small, rustly/noisy and I rarely wear it. Not sure why-I suppose it’s no good if it’s cold and wet so it’s only good for summer/spring wet and then I tend to just take the car or umbrella or not go out till it’s stopped!

*summer canvas jacket-lightweight and khaki-happy with this.

I rather like the idea of a waterproof warm jacket (like Chris Packham or someone else from Springwatch might wear!) as it’s functional, but when you look at them, they’re quite pricey and they also say they’re suitable for hiking or trekking. I am probably not a hiking or trekking sort of person and they probably wouldn’t really go well over my work clothes!

I also rather like the Seasalt Seafolly kind of waterproof coat but reviews suggest they are a bit rustly, so really only suitable if actually raining.

So, I think I want something that’s navy/black, hooded, hip/bum length, reasonably warm and ok in the rain, looks ok over smart-ish work clothes and not too noisy! Does anyone have any suggestions?!

Quite a few I'm a bit obsessed. 7 red coats at the last count

hobbledyhoy · 19/10/2023 19:44

I think I've about 20, scared to count

Cyclingmummy1 · 19/10/2023 19:49

Long black wool from Planet that I've had for 20 years
Mid length black wool mix from Mango - new
Padded navy Barbour - bought last year
Black Berghaus with detachable fleece - at least 10 years old
Denim jacket - this summer
Branded school anorak
Pink velvet lightweight coat from White Stuff - at least 10 years old
Pink wool coat - probably over 20 years old. I hardly ever wear it, but I still love it.
A couple of pacamacs

Think that's it.

NonMiDispiace · 19/10/2023 19:51

Me too @hobbledyhoy 🫣
I’m not going to check how many!

Moveoverdarlin · 19/10/2023 19:53

Probably about 20.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 19/10/2023 19:54

At least 30 including jackets but not including shackets and blazers. Oh my, wish I hadn't counted now!

NatashaDancing · 19/10/2023 19:55

Oh and a black Stutterheim raincoat so 21 and a short baggy, stone coloured raincoat from Carly Gris , so 22.

But a good coat basically lasts for ever.

MightyFine · 19/10/2023 20:00

I have:

1 x long brown waterproof coat from an outdoor pursuits type shop. It's not stylish but is really waterproof

1 x short, red, warm waterproof

1 x blue, ankle length puffer coat

1 x navy wool coat

That's it I think

Wendysfriend · 19/10/2023 20:08

I've 3 😳 and this is the most I've had for years. I normally have a long wool winter coat and a parka, I recently bought a rain jacket as the parka was too warm.

JellyfishandShells · 19/10/2023 20:11

Long black Next puffa coat for cold, cold weather
Truly ancient Esprit waterproof coat with detachable lining and detachable fur collar and many pockets
Barbour jacket that is at least 35 years old which DD keeps trying to ‘adopt’
Velvet mid thigh length coat for smart evening
Strange grey lightweight duster coat from charity shop with Australian label that works with many things
Mid thigh padded waterproof in pinkish plaid from Tu, just right for now
Two gilets
Lightweight zip front cagoule
Teddy bear fabric coat below knee that takes being bundled up and bouncing back
Classic Burberry trench of venerable age which is a bit tight across the bosom

That’s more than I thought ! The Esprit, Barbour and Burberry seriously challenged my budget at the time of purchases but proved their worth in longevity.

Had to ditch a beloved but worn out navy pea coat, as had hung it up behind door all summer and sun got it all down one sleeve

ElizaMulvil · 19/10/2023 20:17

3 full length coats - 1 grey, 1 black (15-20 years old) 1 black ( 10+ years) broken zip!
1 red/black waterproof ( bought for 14 year old son - now 41!) Still works.
1 blue jacket, 1 brown - 15 years old + can't remember buying them.

Too lazy to go shopping.

MrsAukerman · 19/10/2023 20:20

Probably fewer than half a dozen.
However I was out with my wealthiest friend the other night and she claimed to have 90 coats!!!!

Sibilantseamstress · 19/10/2023 20:24

-Long black wool coat (sewed myself)
-Mid-thigh Raspberry Harris tweed coat (sewed myself)
-Maroon, knee length padded waterproof with hood (Seasalt)
-Classic, tan trench coat (Hobbes)
-Long, olive puffer coat (Poetry)
-Black rain jacket (Northface)

cathyandclaire · 19/10/2023 20:29

Lots Blush but in my defence I've had many for 20 or more years:
4 Westwood coats 3 wool ( charcoal grey, black, burgundy) and 1 black velvet
3 leather coats ( all vintage) black, forest green, mulberry
2 wool crombie style - navy, red
4 faux fur ( navy, black, burgundy, black teddy style)
3 evening velvet - black, green, black brocade frock coat
3 slim fit trenches- beige, forest green, navy
Plus practical stuff like puffas, Barbour type etc.

I haven't bought one since before Covid, so tempted by a camel coat this winter!

Rocket1982 · 19/10/2023 20:32

2 down coats, one warmer but not in great condition, the other was a gift
1 trench coat
1 wool coat vintage 60s a bit too big, purchased from a market for £30
1 navy fabric biker jacket
1 supposedly waterproof summer jacket
the above I wear but I have about 4 other mid length coats I have never got rid of but basically never wear from back to my teens (now 40s) So 10 in total!

AdoraBell · 19/10/2023 20:36

1 raincoat
1 long coat
1 shearling
1 leather jacket with a warm liner, that’s older than my DDs 🤣
1 short quilted jacket

Aria20 · 19/10/2023 20:39

Blimey some of these replies are crazy no one needs that many coats lol if you don't wear them then charity shop...

I have 3 - one long thick padded Jack Wolfskin coat for walking dog/doing school run in really cold weather, one Barbour wax jacket with a furry lining so it's waterproof and reasonably warm for autumn/spring. One long wool coat for the odd smart thing I need a coat for in winter.

I don't have any jackets or gilets at all!! In the summer I just wear a cardigan if I need a layer! I have never found a light jacket I like and I wear jeans a lot so couldn't do a denim jacket or I'd be "double denim"

Cantonet · 19/10/2023 20:40

I was going to say 15 - 20 but then realised others have included denim jackets (2) and leather jackets (3).

peanutbutterkid · 19/10/2023 20:45

Maybe 3, all ex-H's brother's cast offs. I wear a coat about .... 3x a year? They don't fit my lifestyle i guess.

OhDoSitDownAndShutUp · 19/10/2023 20:54

A black leather biker jacket
canvas raincoat with hood
boucle coat, knee-length
lightweight anorak thing
denim jacket

2 woollen coats that no longer fit me Sad

NatashaDancing · 19/10/2023 21:00

I do wear all of mine I try , and usually manage, to wear a different coat every day. Monday, Max Mara camel, Tuesday Max Mara navy, Wednesday stone Macintosh, today Oska puffer.

There's no one coat which would suit all occasions and clothes and weather conditions.

FallingAutumnLeaf · 19/10/2023 21:21

2, but could do with something smarter for the summer.
I have: thin, waterproof summer coat and big, thick, thigh length waterproof winter coat.

Spendonsend · 19/10/2023 21:24

Summer waterproof
Winter waterproof (mid weight)
