How many coats do you have?!

I need a new jacket-mine is falling apart, but it’s got me thinking about what I actually have/want/need.

I already have a

  • navy blue quilted hip length hooded jacket that I wear loads in spring/autumn and warmer winter. It’s got a bit tight now and is battered, so need to replace it-if I could find the same one (Next circa 2013), I’d probably get the same one but can’t find it.

*long padded warm M+S black coat. I like it-very flattering but barely wear it as it’s long and I’m short and it seems to get in the way!

*Wool duffle coat-love it, very warm, wear it when it’s cold but it’s not so great in the wet.

*North Face anorak type coat-bought for rainy days but it’s a bit small, rustly/noisy and I rarely wear it. Not sure why-I suppose it’s no good if it’s cold and wet so it’s only good for summer/spring wet and then I tend to just take the car or umbrella or not go out till it’s stopped!

*summer canvas jacket-lightweight and khaki-happy with this.

I rather like the idea of a waterproof warm jacket (like Chris Packham or someone else from Springwatch might wear!) as it’s functional, but when you look at them, they’re quite pricey and they also say they’re suitable for hiking or trekking. I am probably not a hiking or trekking sort of person and they probably wouldn’t really go well over my work clothes!

I also rather like the Seasalt Seafolly kind of waterproof coat but reviews suggest they are a bit rustly, so really only suitable if actually raining.

So, I think I want something that’s navy/black, hooded, hip/bum length, reasonably warm and ok in the rain, looks ok over smart-ish work clothes and not too noisy! Does anyone have any suggestions?!

I own far too many coats as with every other item of clothing.

Youthinkyoureuniqueyourejustastatistic · 19/10/2023 18:06

Princessfluffy · 19/10/2023 18:08

I have loads in different colours and lengths. Five faux fur ones for starters.

megletthesecond · 19/10/2023 18:09

About 8. But I walk to work and the supermarket so need a decent collection.

1 duvet coat
1 wool blend (would like to replace with 100% wool)
A light sports jacket
A denim jacket
A parka

So 5 to cover all seasons

Mumaway · 19/10/2023 18:31

I have a hip length quite padded jacket from Tu at Sainsbury's. It is waterproof and has a packaway hood, but looks pretty smart, plus not expensive. They have them in stock at our local

Year13novice · 19/10/2023 18:38

SkyFullofStars1975 · 19/10/2023 18:55

DH made a point of counting mine earlier this year and moaning that he hasn't got 1 single hook on the coat rack.

I think he got bored at around 26 and he hadn't counted the ones in my wardrobe in the spare room Blush in my defence, I'm outdoors with the dogs in most weathers so have thin waterproofs, windproof jackets, longer rain coats with linings, wax jackets. I like to have options.

mamaduckbone · 19/10/2023 18:57
  • a proper winter long down quilted coat
  • a smartish winter wool coat
  • a north face lightweight waterproof
  • a sea salt long showerproof Mac
  • 2 denim jackets
  • a north face gilet
  • a canvas summer jacket

Plus a couple of others that I never wear and should probably get rid of. Most of my coats are years old though, apart from the winter down coat which I got a couple of christmases ago. My north face gilet and denim jacket are over 20 years old!
So the answer is probably too many...

mamaduckbone · 19/10/2023 18:59

Although having just rtft and seen some posters have more than 20, perhaps not too many.

BHRK · 19/10/2023 18:59

A warm waterproof down parka
4 smart wool coats for work/nights out
a thin waterproof for summer
5 cotton trench coats in different colours

BHRK · 19/10/2023 19:00

Oh and a short puffA

IndianSummer78 · 19/10/2023 19:03

The other day I counted them up as a way of talking myself out of another. This doesn't include all the chunky cardigans that are basically jackets or the long cardigans. Mainly because I was too busy going 😱 to keep counting. I do have too many but I wear most of them and have got rid of those which don't fit already.

50 coats
22 jackets
20 blazers

At the risk of sounding like a total hypocrite OP, you don't need that black too-long one or the noisy unsuitable-for-anything one. Get rid and buy a few you like instead.

I think it's a mistake to try to make one or two coats do everything. Unless you only wear one style of clothing all year round. In your situation I'd have one for work and one for downtime as a minimum, both for spring/autumn and winter, so 4 coats total.

Drews · 19/10/2023 19:12

Oversized denim jacket, black leather biker, softshell windproof, long waterproof parka, summer rainjacket, red duffle, down gilet.

That covers all basis for me.

orchardsquare · 19/10/2023 19:18

Funnily enough, I was thinking about having a coat audit earlier. I don't have loads and loads of coats but find that I only ever wear one or two.
I have a lightweight teal raincoat which is suitable for summer/all year round really - it's flexible and doesn't rustle.
A burgundy Regatta jacket that I need to get rid of - is a bit stiff/makes an annoying noise/too tight in places.
A navy wool type coat that I've worn for the last few winters. Has now got all bobbly/loose hanging threads and needs replacing.
A black rubberised parka type coat from M&S that I bought fairly recently, but realised it isn't really that comfy.
A really thick, warm, black outdoor coat from Land's End that I've had for many years but hardly worn as it's never cold enough. Probably a few more but I need to go and do my audit.

That sounds really sensible!!

Approx 15 coats and about 12 jackets.

RaraRachael · 19/10/2023 19:25

Probably about 20 if you're counting all types - including summer jackets.

PrintersCourt · 19/10/2023 19:29

So many that they don’t fit in my wardrobe and I have to keep several in the car!

Grey smart fitted coat (Primark)
Grey fur hooded jacket (Next)
Black puffa jacket (Fatface)
Black decent raincoat (Fatface)
Black foldable raincoat (Primark)
Black quilted bomber/shacket thing (New Look)
Khaki utility jacket (Dorothy Perkins)
Denim jacket (Next)
Denim shacket (Sainsburys)
Black leather biker (M&S)
Taupe suede biker (Primark)
Black blazer (H&M)
Black biker style trench (Phase Eight)
Khaki fitted coat with hood (French Connection from TKMaxx, probably my most versatile one)
Charcoal wool bomber (H&M)

I think that’s it 😅

Motheranddaughter · 19/10/2023 19:30

10

NatashaDancing · 19/10/2023 19:36

3 Max Mara coats (camel, black and navy)
A black Laura Ashley riding coat from the late 80s
A black, knee length cashmere coat from the 1960s
2 Harris Tweed knee length tailored coats
A long black wool coat from Lillith
A red wool cocoon coat from Lillith
A navy Macintosh
A stone Macintosh
A full length, navy cotton coat from Cabbages and Roses
A lightweight raincoat from Oska
A heavyweight parka from Oska
A very heavy black wool coat from an art student designer which weighs a ton
2 knee length Hobbs Coats
A light knee length summer coat from Oska
An ancient Barbour type waterproof jacket
A knee length teal Laura Ashley coat

That's 20. I'm not counting jackets.

Some of these are decades old
