Waterproof coat / jacket that won't make me look like I'm going rambling

I love rambling, but only on holiday! In my daily life I live in a city and teach in HE so can wear casual but like to look on trend / stylish whatever if possible!

What coat / outerwear shall I buy for this AW that will be waterproof for soggy commutes but also look good with an outfit and not like a camping kagool. I can only invest in one item so I'm torn between parkas, Barbour style things or something else! Needs a hood.

can anyone tell me how the Sweaty Betty coats fit? I have chubby arms and like coats to be loose enough to wear a jumper underneath

They are £££ now but so lovely and cut in a really flattering a line. If tall do the long one, the 3/4 length does mean wet legs

Totally recommend seasalt..... On my second one (spring beech), light and long, perfect for commuting and dog walking this time of year (in Scotland so great for unexpected rain). They hang nicely, good shape etc some styles maybe for older women but I'm in early 40s and think looks okay!!.... Totally weather and waterproof. Hoods good size. However take a look at their eBay outlet, good bargains on there, got mine half price!

Question for anyone who has the protected species Commuter jacket - can you zip it up most of the way, and leave the collar lying open/flat? All the photos show either totally unzipped, or zipped up with the funnel collar buttoned over. While the funnel collar would be fine it a real rainstorm, it would be too much for everyday, but if it always stands up like that when unzipped, that would get a bit annoying too.

@catscatscurrantscurrants I really like that trench you posted. Do you think it's waterproof?

Yes the material is very soft and "floppy" so you don't have to zip it all the way up.

I have a Stutterheim and I'm a bit sick of it - effective but very plastic-y. I know this is the point and it's good in a downpour but it's overkill in drizzle. I think Rains are nice but similar tbh.

I can't be doing with trying to make a Seasalt/Joules vibe work in a city.

If COS bring back their rubberized mac, that'd be it. Or if the LF Markey one came back and was longer.

but a) it keeps going out of stock so maybe everyone will have one? b) i personally like brown but it is not everyone's cup of tea c) it does not claim to be actually waterproof so maybe it's useless?
