Waterproof coat / jacket that won't make me look like I'm going rambling

I love rambling, but only on holiday! In my daily life I live in a city and teach in HE so can wear casual but like to look on trend / stylish whatever if possible!

What coat / outerwear shall I buy for this AW that will be waterproof for soggy commutes but also look good with an outfit and not like a camping kagool. I can only invest in one item so I'm torn between parkas, Barbour style things or something else! Needs a hood.

That’s gorgeous.

I have this and it’s amazing- really light, totally waterproof, packs well. Has survived 5ish years of me stuffing it in bags and generally abusing it, and still looks great.

I have a nice 3/4 length lined hooded mac with decent size pockets from Cotton Traders. I got it for school but sometimes hike in it!

I love the Protected Species Commuter coat. Not very warm but very waterproof and stylish. www.protected-species.com/product/waterproof-commuter/

I’ve got a Protected Species parka in the grey (which is actually sort of grey-purple colour), bought it coming up for 4 years ago in one of their special offers and it’s still going strong - fab quality, still waterproof and with layers underneath is really warm. One of my more sensible clothing investments Grin

I've got one of these. It's lush. Had for about 6 years and it looks like new

Greenly3 · 31/08/2023 05:09

I recently bought a RAIN waterproof longline jacket recommended by mums net and it’s absolutely fantastic! I was delighted because I got it in pink!
not cheap, but it will last me the rest of my life I hope😜

Blankscreen · 31/08/2023 07:03

I've got a Rains jacket (second one) and it's ok but leaks on the shoulder seams.

Last year I wanted a really water proof coat and tried on loads. Ended up buying one from the M and S Good Move range for £100 which was basically a copy of the sweaty Betty parka but 1/2 price.

It's great!

@musicmum75 I've been lusting after the Commuter coat. How does the sizing come up? A few of the reviews say it's small on the hips.

Noorandapples · 31/08/2023 07:17

My god I forget how much money most people on mumsnet have 😂

CuriousPorg · 31/08/2023 07:18

Also working in HE. I find it very hard not to be too mumsy or too corporate. A lot of the coats posted would be lovely for the school run but too out doorsy. Love the rain sisters ones though! I was thinking about getting a belted trench coat from Hobbs. Classic and can be paired with smart jeans quite nicely.

SuperCallieFragilistic · 31/08/2023 07:22

Protected Species for me too. I got the Mac style in their 40% off sale last year. Love it.

AreYouShittingMe · 31/08/2023 07:34

I've recently got this (sorry, can't post a link!) It's smarter than most waterproof coats and wind resistant too. I got it specifically for walking across campus and not wanting to look like I'm dog walking!
It comes in other colours too

I'm probably not the best person to ask as I am very short but I don't find it to be at all fitted on me. I like it because it's not like a huge baggy tent on me but it's not figure hugging at all.

ScentOfSawdust · 31/08/2023 08:00

Uniqlo’s blocktech range is great. I’ve got a coat from the men’s range as I preferred the cut. They’re not warm but they’re very waterproof and I prefer something I can layer anyway. It also can be crammed up small in the bottom of my bag when the sun comes out.

calyxx · 31/08/2023 08:16

Rains shorter jacket leaves that solid waterline on my trousers but the long one's better. Very thin and rubbery though, not much of a coat. Finisterre? Borderline hikey but nicely cut.

MissBiljanaElectronika · 31/08/2023 08:42

I got this, it’s quite classic in style, proper proper waterproof (even in deluge), looks smart for work

or do you like more modern? Ilse Jacobsen might be more your style?

I LOVE my Agu

MissBiljanaElectronika · 31/08/2023 08:44

It’s not cheap though, but it lasts 10 years 😁

Coolblur · 31/08/2023 09:00

buckingmad I really like that one, particularly in the blue check. How warm is it?

blarm · 31/08/2023 09:46

I love my protected species waterproof parka. It's completely waterproof. I would love the winter parka but the 2 colours don't suit me

readbooksdrinktea · 31/08/2023 09:48

I have one from Ilse Jacobsen and recommend.

JLC24 · 31/08/2023 09:59

Rains (thin but great over any outfit) or Sweaty Betty (beige trench coat or green short parka are both gorgeous) if you want to avoid Joules/Seasalt vibes
