Waterproof coat / jacket that won't make me look like I'm going rambling

wintersprinter81 · 30/08/2023 12:05

I love rambling, but only on holiday! In my daily life I live in a city and teach in HE so can wear casual but like to look on trend / stylish whatever if possible!

What coat / outerwear shall I buy for this AW that will be waterproof for soggy commutes but also look good with an outfit and not like a camping kagool. I can only invest in one item so I'm torn between parkas, Barbour style things or something else! Needs a hood.

I love the look of rain sisters coats. And desperate to buy one. But out of my price range unfortunately

wellingtonsandwaffles · 31/08/2023 10:57

I love my Protected Species Commuter jacket, got for the exact reason you stated - not wanting to look like I’m on a hike while walking around the city! Got for £40 on Vinted too - winner!

Yellowlegobrick · 31/08/2023 11:09

Classic trench coat. Every time. A proper gabardine one will be waterproof but look fantastic for years.

LancreWowhawk · 31/08/2023 11:09

This thread has convinced me I need a new waterproof coat. I do love my Seasalt one, but yes, it is very mumsy, and while I don't mind that I don't always want to look mumsy.

I'm now listing after a Protected Species one.

A bomber jacket with a good

MothBat · 31/08/2023 11:17

I quite like this one. It is an actual hiking jacket though.

I got a Protected Species Commuter, and it is small on the hips. I had to size up.

It’s fab, though.

OP New Look do waterproof khaki long jackets (and in other colours too) - they're PVC I'm sure but they're cheap and fairly stylish and do the job. Can't do click links, sorry! NB: I have a Seasalt jacket that I LOVE so am clearly not down with the kids!

Keep an eye regularly on EBay/Vinted.

I absolutely love the look of that coat. I’m literally drooling over it 🥹

ISeeTheLight · 31/08/2023 12:29

I have been lusting after a Rain Sisters one for a while. Can't decide which colour to go for though- I love the prints but worry they are hard to match with clothes unless wearing jeans or something very neutral. They look stunning though.

mistermagpie · 31/08/2023 12:38

I recommend this on every thread on this topic but look at arcteryx.

They are a bit eye watering, price-wise, but do long fully goretex and actually smart coats. I have the patera parka which was a bit of an investment but I live in the west of Scotland so it's worth it's weight in gold. I have the navy and it's properly waterproof, smart enough for work and has done me four winters while still looking immaculate.

There are loads of designs and it's well worth a look, and the money if you can stretch.

@SuperCallieFragilistic i didn't know Protected Species had sales. Can you remember when their sale was?

Lonicerax · 31/08/2023 13:52

I have a protected species coat and it has no warmth.

I have a protected species coat and it has no warmth.

That’s true but it’s also one of the advantages, IMO. The same coat does me all year round. I just layer-up under it in winter.

SuperCallieFragilistic · 31/08/2023 15:01

@WhereAreWeNow I've just checked my emails and I bought it in mid October last year. So fingers crossed they'll have the same offer in about six weeks' time!

WhereAreWeNow · 31/08/2023 15:05

Thanks @SuperCallieFragilistic - I'll keep an eye out

BaconWaffles · 31/08/2023 15:18

I have a Protected Species but hardly ever wear it because the sleeves are too long. I got someone to shorten them but it's still not quite right and it annoys me. It's also white, which is what I thought would look stylish at the time for occasional going out, but it means I worry too much about dirt to end up wearing it as an everyday coat.

I'd get navy or something another time, but not sure if I could as I imagine the sleeves on all the styles would be similarly long.

hashisucks · 31/08/2023 15:25

I have a similar lifestyle (work in HE in a cold rainy city!) and I bought a Protected Species like a lot of folk here are recommending but I went for the Waterproof Mac - which I preferred (being hourglass) to the Commuter. Unfortunately it looks like they've discontinued it but there is the Trench option. I thought it looked like it would swamp me though as I'm petite. I also have a Rains belted trench. Both are pretty good in terms of being a bit smarter and more "city" than a typical outdoor jacket. Didriksons do good outerwear too but probs more casual.

thismummydrinksgin · 31/08/2023 16:15

I have a protected species one, it's amazing. Honestly try one.

BakewellFart · 31/08/2023 17:01

I got a waterproof one recently in the Crew sale. Not a shop I usually go into but the coat is excellent quality and it was half price.

fiftyval · 31/08/2023 17:35

This Norwegian Brand is fabulous but ££££'s. I bought from a local Indie boutique having saved up. Investment purchase but worth every penny as totally waterproof without getting clammy. If you are anywhere near Chichester there is a shop called Little London Boutique which is a stockist.
