Do people still think wearing red at weddings is dodgy?

I've just seen on another thread that wearing red to a wedding means you've slept with the groom traditionally. Is this still a thing?

I've bought a long red/ pinkish boho style dress for my cousin's wedding (cousin is the bride). Planning to wear with flat sandals.

I've never met the geezer so definitely no hidden messages but don't know how traditional his family are/ are not.

I don't want to look like a trouble maker or attention seeker! My cousin has specified that she wants an informal wedding in terms of dress etc.

Only very odd people. You'll get those saying you can't wear green either because it angers the fairies. It's all nonsense and wearing both colours is fine.

doroda · 14/08/2023 08:50

I've never heard of this.

RichTeaCheddars · 14/08/2023 08:52

I'd heard was that it's because red stands out more than other colours in photos.

PuttingDownRoots · 14/08/2023 08:53

What are you allowed to wear to a wedding? 😂
No black
No white
No green
No red
Not too bridesmaid like
No upstanding the brides mother
Not too formal
Not too casual

Is there just one approved outfit?

Saschka · 14/08/2023 08:53

The issue is a “scarlet woman” style slutty red dress. Because it looks like you are trying to upstage the bride. A normal dress with some red on it is fine.

Basically dress A - avoid. Dress B - fine

Never heard of this at all.

With kindness, you’re overthinking this! There’s absolutely nothing wrong with not wanting to offend or upset people, it”s how we should all live, but these “rules” (I’d not heard of this one!) are old fashioned and frankly bonkers!
Wear your lovely red dress and have a great time!

NatashaDancing · 14/08/2023 11:52

These rules do not exist outside of MN.

I think green is specifically for traditional Irish weddings.

I concur with above comments on red. I would be a little more careful with the cut of a red dress and ensure it was on the modest side just in case. But I really don't think it's a big deal, certainly not in the same category as wearing white/cream.

StarlightLady · 14/08/2023 13:36

I've worn red to a couple of weddings and never given it a thought.

If you have a red light outside your front door, it could be another matter 😂.

WontLetThoseRobotsDefeatMe · 14/08/2023 13:43

Blimey, I was planning on wearing a red dress to my brother's wedding!!

RiaOverTheRainbow · 14/08/2023 13:52

I think it's a visual shorthand in film, you dress the groom's evil ex in something red, short and clingy to convey that she Wants Him Back and is here to Cause Trouble. Presumably you aren't a film character, so don't worry about it!

AngeloMysterioso · 14/08/2023 13:53

I will never, ever forget the wedding I went to where the mother of the bride was wearing a tight, thigh length red satin dress with a black feather boa and fishnet tights. She looked like an extra from Moulin Rouge 😂

bejewelled13 · 14/08/2023 14:07

I wore red to my mums wedding and I defiantly did not sleep with her husband 🫠😂

Peony654 · 14/08/2023 14:08

I’ve never heard of anything. Only to not wear a plain white dress!

AndyMcFlurry · 14/08/2023 14:11

No. The only rules that most people observe are

Don't dress like a bride or bridesmaid
don’t dress like you are going clubbing or to a funeral

Wow!! That is a special effort 😁

Omg I wore red to my best friend's wedding 20 years ago and never realised this was even a thing 😱

I got married in red too!

caringcarer · 14/08/2023 19:44

I've never worn red or white/cream to a wedding. I try to avoid the colour of bridesmaids dresses too. Plenty of other colours to choose from.

You got married in red!??? Did you shag the groom?😂

TheGoodBanana · 14/08/2023 23:11

So many rules! Three of my sisters wore cream/white dresses to my wedding and it wasn't until I joined Mumsnet years later that I knew I was supposed to be offended.

Immediately went NC and LTBitches behind.

Pugdogmom · 15/08/2023 06:49

The only rules I follow are not wearing white or cream and not wearing same colours as Bridesmaids. I'm a bit past the dressing to go clubbing outfit.
Never heard of not wearing red. My friend wore red to her sons wedding. She looked lovely.

Somewhereovertherainbowweighapie · 15/08/2023 06:52

My friend got married and the bridesmaid dresses were red. None of us had slept with the groom.
