Can I wear black to a wedding if it's covered in tiny flowers?

I have spent AGES hunting for a dress I will be comfortable enough to wear in at a wedding. I don't do dresses and I don't do bright colour. I do dark clothes. I have found this dress. I like it. Can I wear it to a wedding it says it's black but the tiny flowers all over it make it seem more red/ pink? I would wear it with ankle boots.

Also I hate the traditional weddingy look that people compare these types of beautiful dresses too! I would say the typical wedding guest weddingy outfits are now quite dated. They either give me mother of the bride or chav at the races vibes. The dress you have chosen is classy and can be dressed up for a wedding or dresses down for a more casual look.

Doesn't look black to me, a lovely dress

And don’t wear green it will anger the fairies! 😂

I'll be left with just lemon yellow as a choice at this rate 😄

It's a pretty dress and definitely looks more colourful than black.

I'm glad you've realised the ankle boots would be a no-no! Definitely needs pretty shoes and a nice clutch to make it more weddingy.

Back in my early 20s, I went to a wedding in a dress that was black with red cherries and green leaves, and it turned out the bride’s family was super traditional and thought I was telling everybody that I lost my cherry to the groom, was grieving the marriage, and was wishing them bad luck.

It was awkward. I have been very cautious about wedding dresses ever since!

But I think that kind of batshit reaction was weird even then.

That’s brilliant 😆 On another note, I’d totally wear that dress!

Missmoppetspoppet · 10/08/2023 13:16

Really lovely dress. Definitely agree with PPs though that brown ankle boots would be too dressed down. A pair of shoes and a clutch bag in one of the colours of the flowers would be perfect.

poetryandwine · 10/08/2023 14:08

It’s a lovely dress. Very similar to the dress that made me feel my prettiest ever, also with a black background, and that I once wore to a wedding. It def needs nice shoes

Heronwatcher · 10/08/2023 14:53

The dress is lovely but with boots it will look like workwear. You need a nice pair of shoes- maybe some wedge sandals? Dark green or peach might work?

Highdaysandholidays1 · 10/08/2023 14:57

I went to a December wedding 15 years ago in a very fashionable location and pretty much everyone was in black! Usually mixed in with a colourful scarf or nude shoes (that era). Unless you are accessorising it with a black hat and veil, I think you'll be fine.

madamovaries · 10/08/2023 23:28

Gorgeous dress! You can definitely wear that.

Agree with this 🙂
I prefer dresses that you can wear again and dress up or down easily. I personally would also feel much more comfortable in a dress like that than in an awkward ‚occasion‘ number.

Definitely batshit 😳🍒😂

Strappy sandals, a clutch bag and something for your hair and it would be fab.

Don't do a necklace unless it's long.

Don't do earrings unless they are long, hair back to see then and skip anything else in the hair.

Or skip the earrings and for for fancy hair fascinate. They annoy me to be honest to I tend to opt for jewellery.

Highdaysandholidays1 · 11/08/2023 12:54

Just my opinion, but I don't like fascinators at all! Or hats. All too Royal Family who look dated to me (I get that's their gig though). Lovely jewellery, glam shoes.

JaneJeffer · 11/08/2023 12:59

Lots of young women wore black dresses to the last wedding I was at, including the bridesmaids!

PeopleAreWeird · 11/08/2023 18:00

Its not Black - More Purple

mondaytosunday · 11/08/2023 20:51

I've seen a lot of black at weddings. But I wouldn't say this dress is black at all.

Italiangreyhound · 11/08/2023 21:58

Lovely dress looks more pink.

Viviennemary · 12/08/2023 07:47

It doesn't look black at all. It will be fine

explainthistomeplease · 12/08/2023 07:52

It's lovely. I did in fact wear black background for son's wedding - with big red flowers and a longish velvet duster coat (winter wedding). no one cared. I smiled all day. That's the important thing.

But yes it's lovely

Is black really bad to wear to a wedding?

I think it is seen as a bit somber/ serious the sort of thing you would wear to a funeral or a job interview.
Would you wear Barbie pink or bright blue to a funeral unless it was at the deceased request? They are colours associated with fun and joy.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 12/08/2023 10:46

I wore a black and teal dress to a wedding last week, including a black hat, so it's a definite yes from me.

Shoe suggestions if not too late. (For inspiration only!)
