Can I wear black to a wedding if it's covered in tiny flowers?

I have spent AGES hunting for a dress I will be comfortable enough to wear in at a wedding. I don't do dresses and I don't do bright colour. I do dark clothes. I have found this dress. I like it. Can I wear it to a wedding it says it's black but the tiny flowers all over it make it seem more red/ pink? I would wear it with ankle boots.

Ok got it - new shoes required. Thank you all so much. I love that I can come here and you're all honest!

I just bought a black dress for a wedding!! Is that not allowed?? It’s got cut outs so looks summery..

JusthereforXmas · 10/08/2023 09:39

Someone wore all black to my wedding and I only noticed because she looked lovely... I don't see any offense at black and I only know 1 person who would be offended by black.

I think black is pretty standard these days.

Tilep · 10/08/2023 09:44

Yes. You can also wear plain black imo, such an outdated concept.

TFP · 10/08/2023 09:54

It's more than fine.

IsItThough · 10/08/2023 09:59

That's nice, very Vampire's Wife, totally wedding appropriate.

Pick a colour from the dress (or something madly contrasting) and get a simple ballet flat, court or sandal to go with, depending on your look.

Loads of future styling possibilities for it. Good buy I reckon.

I believe it sends a message of disapproval, and that you're grieving the marriage. 🙄

Depends how much the bride and groom value pointless traditions like these. Red means you've slept weird the groom also.

Moveoverdarlin · 10/08/2023 10:34

It’s quite wintery. Brown ankle boots wouldn’t be suitable for a wedding. I wouldn’t wear boots at all, but if you are I think they would need to be black. Black boots with a black dress.

Bluevelvetsofa · 10/08/2023 10:34

Nobody’s Child sizing is quite small, so you might need to go up a size.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 10/08/2023 10:44

That isn’t black, I would probably call it a purple dreas

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 10/08/2023 11:14

I think it looks great, and the print colours are way more dominant than the black. I’m not a fan of black head to toe at weddings, but I wouldn’t even think of this as a black dress.

As another poster suggested, if you’d feel comfortable wearing a fascinator, it would formalise it a bit without too much effort/expense. (My mother got hers for a recent wedding in the Claire’s Accessories sale!) You could get further wear out of the dress in future with more casual shoes etc. too.

Yeah 100% wear it! I hate all this not weddingy enough, much better to be comfortable and happy! X

hollyblueivy · 10/08/2023 11:18

Is black really bad to wear to a wedding?

uncomfortablydumb53 · 10/08/2023 11:19

That's fine for a funeral and a lovely dress

uncomfortablydumb53 · 10/08/2023 11:19

Wedding sorry! Have a funeral to go to

AnotherThingToThinkAbout · 10/08/2023 11:21

Yes, absolutely fine.

It used to be seen as a sign of disapproval, and I think a lot of older people would perhaps still see it as a faux pas. But I think it’s probably dying out. My cousin even had black bridesmaids’ dresses.

purplecorkheart · 10/08/2023 11:27

I like the dress but not ankle boots for a wedding unless it is super informal.

VerbenaGirl · 10/08/2023 11:31

Absolutely - it looks lovely and very appropriate.

AndyMcFlurry · 10/08/2023 11:46

The only problem with all black is if it looks like something somber you would wear to a funeral. That dress if does not look like a funeral dress so it’s absolutely fine.

ithinkhesawus · 10/08/2023 11:48

Thank you- it's on its way. I sized up - thanks for the tip

And don’t wear green it will anger the fairies! 😂

inamarina · 10/08/2023 11:55

I agree with others - it doesn’t look black, more plum. And it’s beautiful 🙂

happygertie · 10/08/2023 11:57

It's a lovely dress. I also think black is fine for a wedding too. The only colour I would avoid is white/ cream.
