Clothes to keep cool for fatty going to hot holiday

tanyamcquoid · 18/07/2023 10:45

Help! I am a size 20 and need to source some clothes that I won’t melt in for two trips: one to Croatia in a few weeks and the second to Singapore in October where it will be relentlessly humid. The second trip will also involve another trip to an island including a jungle trek…So I need a mix of the right clothes for this plus resort and city wear!
If anyone can find loose, comfortable, cool clothes for big sizes and links to them, I would be most grateful. Bonus points for swimsuits (huge chest so always a challenge).

Sweaty Betty do a capri trouser made from a fabric which is soooo cool. Let me try and find detail…. Better than wearing shorts as the fabric sits cool on the leg.

Large white linen shirt over swimsuit on trend at the mo.

MooFroo · 18/07/2023 23:24

in Europe at the moment where it’s really hot! I’m also size 18-20 with huge norks and wore mainly long maxi dresses and linen trousers and tops.

i have also sworn to lose weight for the next holiday - i was very sweaty and tired constantly having to sit down for a bit while we were out and about. Definitely impacted my enjoyment of the time away so I need to fix it for next time x

First. Stop. Do not call yourself a fatty. Beauty comes in all sizes. I live in a very hot climate and I am a smaller size but I swear by anti chafe shorts under loose cotton dresses. Also tank tops ( vest tops?) and loose shorts. Sandals instead of shoes that enclose your feet. Maxi dresses are awesome!!

Threenow · 19/07/2023 00:18

Linen, linen, and more linen - it really does keep you cool, and who cares if it wrinkles, that's part of the attraction. It also washes and dries well. I live in linen dresses in summer.

Threenow · 19/07/2023 00:19

Forgot to say, I find dresses/skirts are much cooler than shorts (unless they're linen of course!)

londonmummy1966 · 19/07/2023 00:34

Look at Brastop for swimwear for the top heavy as it sizes by cupsize.

I've been to Athens recently and found that the best things were loose knitted linen tops (so like a jumper/tshirt rather than a shirt) and proper wicking sports wear. Mountain Warehouse and the dreadful SPorts DIrect are good for that.

Last year in Paris at 40c I lived in next t shirt dresses. Chub rub shorts under them. I had a cooling towel drenched in water on my head all day tho

Hi, I know your post was with the absolute best intentions. But, we can be both fat and beautiful! I think we need to take a wee bit of heat out of the word fat; and stop letting people use it as an insult

momager1 · 19/07/2023 01:42

@Gonnawashmymouthout you may be right. Sorry if i caused offence . I am so sick of women putting themselves down. Yes you can be heavy and beautiful. You can be skinny and beautiful. I am just so sick of women having to feel that they have to describe themselves as FAT or SKINNY or OLD . We are just women and we need to build each other up. And lets face it. Calling someone fat is not self empowering for the most part. Most of us who have faced weight issues KNOW that most of the time it is someone Insulting us. I used to be alot heavier and my husband once said to me .. after I came home so upset because someone had commented on how much weight I had gained, he said.. she may be skinny.. but if you choose to you can lose weight, but she will always be a mean rude cunt. So I stand beside my words. Do not call ourselves FAT, UGLY, SKINNY we are all beautiful women as long as we are nice people.

Was just about to come on to say look on Boohoo.com but someone has just beaten me to it! There is loads on there, really good value for money and the plus size shorts are always a bit longer. Have a trawl through and you will definitely find something.

These are gorgeous!! I didn't know they did trousers!! Do they feel like pyjama bottoms when you go out though??! Do you just embrace it ?

GuffyTheDustBuster · 19/07/2023 06:22

Am your size and large of nork.
Took 4 swimming cossies away recently (2 underwired - 2 not) and this one was the one I wore most.

The non underwired ones I got from Decathlon - which surprised me. Can't recall what they were called but just amazed they had any that would work!

And my least worn one was from Bravissimo because its so darned difficult to put on without help what with 2 back clasps - but it looked brilliant when it was on!

I'm the same size as you, 40G and if it's of any use I'm 36. Recently been in Singapore and I wore M&S high waisted linen trousers with cotton vests or t shirts tucked in and a linen shirt (M&S again) over the top if needed to cover arms a bit, I would tie it so it showed off my waist). Evenings out I wore a maxi dress, or midi dress with cycling shorts under, or tailored shorts with a t shirt tucked in. Everywhere has AC.

speakout · 19/07/2023 06:54

You will need some decent trousers for your jungle trek- and they need to be tucked into boots or walking shoes.
Rainforests are nasty hostile places- nothing like the shampoo ads- they are teeming with creepy crawlies, leeches, venomous snakes, biting centipedes, snakes, spiders.
You need to make sure nothing can get to your feet, ankles or up your trousers.
Loose fitting is cool, but again make sure garments don't have close fitting sleeves.
I wouldn't wear shorts in the jngle.

trrk · 19/07/2023 07:37

I wouldn’t pick a jumpsuit for hiking in case you need to pee in the wild. Look for some ultra lightweight hiking trousers.

FindingTheFox · 19/07/2023 07:53

I would wear full length activewear leggings in the jungle (so nothing can get in them!) and linen or cotton dresses the rest of the time. I have a couple of lovely Fatface ones, similar to this (not exactly the same as mine are a few years old).

I wore them on holiday first then to a festival then loved them so much wear them out an about in my home city (UK) when it is warm. I wear a cotton t or vest with them and don't think it screams pj's 🙂
