What shoes with this dress?

I've bought this dress for a dinner in September: https://www.phase-eight.com/product/tana-swirl-chiffon-midi-dress-22147244614.html

On the website it's styled with boots, which aren't really right for the dinner. My first thought was black strappy sandals with a not too high heel, but that feels a bit boring. Is there anything more interesting that would work with the dress?

If it makes any difference I'm mid 40s with big (size 8) feet. The dinner is at a conference in a fairly male dominated industry.

Tana Swirl Chiffon Midi Dress |

Our Tana dress is designed in a versatile shirt silhouette and features a striking swirl print. Framed by 3/4 length sleeves, a button front and drawstring waist belt to cinch. We're wearing ours with knee high boots for work and weekends.

I would have said boots too.
Pps suggestion is good.

Alternatively maybe a silver sandal style heel. And a silver glitter bag to add some sparkle? Or just a pretty sparkly bracelet.

Classic green suede or velvet courts.

fairycupcakes · 08/07/2023 14:49

Whatever you do don’t wear an short ankle boot with this length of dress. It’ll cut you off in the wrong places and will make your legs appear stubby if you’re not very tall and it’s just completely off balance as a whole outfit, a slightly taller boot yes, and a block strappy heel would work very well. I would pick black as it’s classic but if you want something a little different you could go with gold seeing as the buttons of the dress are gold coloured to tie it all in? Or even a nude/beige type colour to elongate your legs x

Thanks all.

@fairycupcakes this is what worries me about ankle boots, I'm not particularly tall or slim and I'm not convinced they'd be flattering. The dress is slightly longer on me than on the model.

I do have some gold court shoes with a block heel, as long as I can still walk in them (haven't gone back to heels since Covid) they might work?

What's the dress like on @Poblano - it looks lovely but not sure about the length for me! I realise this wasn't the point of your post! ;)

Yeah so I’d say no to the ankle boots or anything that cuts you off like that especially if the dress is a little longer in length on you than on the model then it just would be totally off-balance and I agree, unflattering. The gold heels sound like a good choice!

Poblano · 08/07/2023 15:49

@WobblyLondoner I think it's more flattering in real life than it looks on the model. It hangs nicely and the length is mid-calf (I'm 5'6).

Yes .. the gold would work !

CindersAgain · 08/07/2023 16:45

Or silver. Ballet flats seem to be in again, I can imagine silver ballet flats looking a bit more modern than those boots the model is wearing.

The dress is quite wi têtu, work-office-like, and nearly looks like a maternity dress- simple pumps. strappy/sandal-like footware would clash with the somber aesthetic of the dress

Poblano · 08/07/2023 17:51

@crowisland I have no idea what wi têtu is, but the dress looks nothing like maternity wear in real life.

I'm not sure about silver as the buttons on the dress are gold and I was planning on wearing gold earrings.

I have black ballet flats but I didn't think they looked right with the dress. It looks better with a bit of a heel.

I think black ballet flats are fine. I'd wear black or green ballet flats. Or treat myself to a new pair - see below.

Someone will be along shortly to tell you "ballet flats are soo dated"- ignore them.

Whoever styled the dress with those boots (the brown knee and the ankle boots) doesn't know what they're doing.

I really don't like any sort of boot with that length of dress. I think strappy sandal with a heel would work.

Poblano · 08/07/2023 18:08

Maybe I'll try the black ballet flats again. It would certainly help with packing as I'll be taking them anyway to the conference to wear during the day. They would also be easier to walk in!

The boots are wrong but I agree with Jongleterre that the dress is too sturdy for sandals. I don't think the strappy gold sandals would like right at all.

For what it's worth I agree with Jongleterre and crowisland about the aesthetic of the dress. I don't think strappy, gold evening sandals are right at all. It's a nice dress, but it's a super smart day to early evening to dinner dress, but not an evening dress.

category12 · 08/07/2023 18:17

I didn't say gold. I'd go for something dark.

I think a heel would be better than flats for a dinner out.

eatdrinkandbemerry · 08/07/2023 18:22

The dress is lovely and I'd wear black ballet shoes

Someone else posted gold sandals. I don't think strappy sandals of any colour are right with that dress. A low or mid heel would be ok, but not a high heel.

Axelotl · 08/07/2023 21:25

I would wear with small grey or black ankle boots. With a small heel.
