What shoes with this dress?

I've bought this dress for a dinner in September: https://www.phase-eight.com/product/tana-swirl-chiffon-midi-dress-22147244614.html

On the website it's styled with boots, which aren't really right for the dinner. My first thought was black strappy sandals with a not too high heel, but that feels a bit boring. Is there anything more interesting that would work with the dress?

If it makes any difference I'm mid 40s with big (size 8) feet. The dinner is at a conference in a fairly male dominated industry.

Tana Swirl Chiffon Midi Dress |

Our Tana dress is designed in a versatile shirt silhouette and features a striking swirl print. Framed by 3/4 length sleeves, a button front and drawstring waist belt to cinch. We're wearing ours with knee high boots for work and weekends.

They are 8.5 cm heels! High by most standards. It’s the same as a Louboutin Kate 85 but just more sturdy. Lower is safer all round.

Maybe the Ravel ones you linked.
Or these suede ones look reasonably comfortable.

There are clearly S&B rules that have so far passed me by if you can't wear open toed shoes with green 🤷‍♀️. Serves me right for asking on this board I guess!

It's all personal taste, isn't it?

Who would be wearing tights in this weather anyway?

Hardbackwriter · 09/07/2023 18:11

I think just @TizerorFizz has a lot of rules! I think the gold pumps could work well - since you already own them can you take a photo of them with the dress? I really don't think they'll be overly attention seeking or that there's anything 'inappropriate' about gold shoes at a conference dinner...

TizerorFizz · 09/07/2023 18:19

Not rules. Just what’s a better choice. Gold shoes are “look at me”. No avoiding it and are black tie evening shoes. The dinner is not that event. Leave the gold in the dress to be what it is. It does not need enhancing with shoes.

category12 · 09/07/2023 18:23

Gosh, I can think of shoes that are far more "look at me" than some pretty simple gold ones.

It's a dinner, I think gold would be fine and not at all out there.

TizerorFizz · 09/07/2023 18:26

Look at Kate Middleton Style. It’s useful as there’s a lot of dark green outfits. Cannot see one with gold shoes. Not even in the evening. Always black, green or (rarely) beige. Mostly the former. She’s classy so I’d follow her lead. Keep it simple.

TizerorFizz · 09/07/2023 18:27

Yup. It’s a dinner. Not a black tie dinner or a showy day out.

category12 · 09/07/2023 18:31

Crikey, your view of what constitutes showiness is very different to mine 😂

GrinAndVomit · 09/07/2023 18:50

I’d be going for big, statement gold platform heels

I love these:

I have nothing against Kate Middleton but she's not a particular style inspiration for me, mostly because I find her choices so conservative. I think you can be appropriately dressed for a work event without trying to emulate a leading member of the nation's stuffiest institution!

DelphiniumBlue · 09/07/2023 21:09

I would wear knee length black suede boots with a pointy front , black tights and have a slightly higher unbuttoned split at the front.
That's because I have boots like that and they work well with that style dress. You don't want to look too heavy or matronly- I don't mean overweight heavy, but more blocky, Undo top and bottom and roll up sleeves, add bracelet .

Bloodyleaverspartybollocks · 09/07/2023 22:13

I think long boots will be fine in September
Nice leather ones will be smart warm and comfortable

Agree and her footwear in particular usually is very impractical, dull and often both.
